They went on improving since their appearance at 1990 World Cup. And in wc2002 they went to quarterfinal through beating Mexico 2-0 on previous round.
It's no great surprise to see them so high as they have won the Gold Cup, but number 6 in the world maybe is more than what they really deserve.
I think they will establish as a major force in world soccer and maybe one day they will play a WC semifinal (or even a final!) as they now have a good league, many youth playing soccer and also all the facilities they need.
btw this is actual Fifa world ranking.

The USA is probably as good as if not better than a lot of European teams at present. Only Brazil and Argentina from South America are able to consistently beat the USA in football and the US is better than most Asian and African teams.

Last world cup, I think U.S was very unlucky not to beat Germany in the quaterfinal to move on to the semis. That was the best U.S. team with the best coach ever I think! A lot of calls went against the U.S. in that Game. Germany was very lucky to get away with that.. very lucky!!
But most of the the players from MLS are crap though... except few like donovan, mcbride, beasly etc and with those players, the U.S national team is quiet strong....
The best thing I liked about the 2002 team was that they were very attacking... In all the matches... U.S. played the finest in first 20 mins... they gave out their best... and usually registers a goal or two.. after that.. they die
Moreover we are also being very focused for the future.. adieu?? (the west indian kid) already got some million dollars deal from Nike at age 14!! I guess he will be playing next world cup not this one... he was sent to Europe for training as far as I remember.

I thought ADU was from one of the african nation (somalia or something). I pretty sure he is not from WI...
Also there keeper is plying for manchester UNited and also the owner is from usa (thought he got hired before the hand exchange) and i saw a report on him in HBO and he is like god to the MU supporters and no one knows him in philli...

Well ,FIFA rankings are pretty inaccurate as far as indicating teh actual strengths of countries.
Right now, Brazil, Arg, spain, portugal, holland, germany, italy, england, czech republic, sweden, and maybe ukraine are all technically better than the USA.
FIFA rankings dont take into account quality of opposition so they are kind of skewed towards sides that play weak teams frequently.
