Exactly! If we could compete with the likes of India like how we did back in the 80s-early-2000s we could definitely have fancied a top-2 finish in this group.

Our football team is only a shadow of it's former self. More young players at BKSP are interested in picking up cricket than football. More money and fame in that.

I think for now we should strongly focus on qualifying for the FIFA Women's World Cup. It's certainly doable. That might raise interest on the sport in our country.

Game day today. Bangladesh takes on Afghanistan to start their 2022 World Cup + 2023 AFC Asia Cup campaign.

Hopefully we can beat Afghanistan since we aren't playing test cricket.

Surprised we lost by just one goal. Afg is a great team, with many of their players playing in the lower divisions in Germany. Went there as refugees, but retain their Afghan citizenship.

Anyway, if we just lost 1-0, I think our soccer is improving. God knows how we will do vs Qatar next month.

We lost by only 1 goal because we parked the bus and did nothing more (failed to even play out a goal-less draw). I have seen the highlights of the game, Afghanistan dominated possession. It was like watching Manchester United vs Sheffield Wednesday match.

We could not connect a single pass. A couple of times we got a free kick and almost immediately we turned over possession to them. The ball barely even went to the Afghanistan half. Zero shots on target from Bangladesh. Goalie made a couple of nice saves. Other than that zero effort made for attack. Complete embarrassment.

And India just tied 0-0 with the current AFC Asia Cup Champions, Qatar in Qatar! While the Afghan team lost 6-0 to Qatar.

Salahuddin is driving BFF into the ground. I've seen nothing but continuous downfall under his management. Wait till we get demolished 4-0 by India.

Thanks for that summary. Yes, you cannot just park the bus. Need to have some type of strategy for the other half of the pitch, like counter attack. But our guys are too slow, so can't make that happen. The only sub continent guys I ever saw with real speed are Afghanistan's wing backs, and Maldives' Ashfag Ali.

India has improved a lot, thanks to ISL (Indian Super League). Players obtain great experience from rubbing shoulders with former stars. Their past prime is still better than the subcontinent average level. You know they spent A LOT of money to get those old guys to come.

Parking the bus works if you are playing against a strong opponent and intentionally want to play out a draw or keep the scores as low as possible. This sort of strategy would make sense against Australia, Korea, Iran, Qatar or Japan, when we have zero chance of winning.

But it was frustrating to see us not even trying to win against Afghanistan. It's like we went there just to see off a draw.

India still has a strong passion for football, particularly in West Bengal. Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal game is played in a packed stadium even today whereas the last Abahani vs Mohammedan game failed to bring 100 spectators to the stadium. We are now losing to the likes of Nepal and Bhutan in SAFF championships at home in a regular basis. If this glaringly obvious downfall in our country's quality of football doesn't give BFF a wake up call, I really don't know what will.

Current captain Jamal Bhuyan mentioned Bangladesh is perhaps the only country in the world where every single game of the tier-1 domestic professional football league is played in 1 stadium. Shows you how poor our infrastructure is.

^ They don't care. Because soccer is so popular worldwide and have such a strong ecosystem of players, they know it will continue to exist and never die out. It's being run like a whorehouse basically. We need strong visionary leaders. But we have incompetent short sighted ones. And they only care about cricket, well more like have enough brain cells for the development of just one sport at a time, so that is now cricket.

Of course the real solution is depoliticize all sports. Governments cannot do anything right.

After losing 9-0 to Japan our U-16 girls team made a surprisingly good come back against Australia:

Bangladesh is playing in the final round of AFC championship now, top 2 teams out of 16 in this tournament qualify for 2020 Under-17 Women's World Cup held in India. We have already been eliminated after losing 1-0 to Thailand, but if we can win this, would end on a positive note.

How can you use soccer clubs' property for organizing gambling? It's beyond me.

I have no problems legalizing gambling and building casinos where people can go to play.

But to do it in all these soccer clubs is just wrong. Sick!

Actually gambling is a bigger source of income for those clubs. It has been going on for many years. Just got caught now..

I also am in favor of legalizing gambling in BD. You cant stop it. People will gamble. Might as well legalize it and let government earn some tax out of it

Bangladesh did well, had a few respectable attempts on goal. But I am left disgusted after the game.

Not sure if this is a football field or a paddy field. Tall grassy areas and mud puddles clearly visible on this 360p resolution video. Any international team would struggle to play their best in these appalling conditions. Can we seriously not provide a better field for these international matches?

Jamie Day and Lodewijk de Kruif have had great contribution to football in Bangladesh, de Kruif had convinced Jamal Bhuyan to represent Bangladesh and now he is our star player and captain. He even organized trials of two Bangladeshi football players in FC Twente.

Jamie Day has produced some phenomenal results with the team too, and our world ranking has only been going up under him.

But sadly coaches only do as much, in a country where the football fields looks like paddy fields. We are the only country in the world where all domestic league and international matches are played in 1 ground.

India 1 - 1 Bangladesh

India always has a weak spot against Bangladesh. They are a stronger team on paper and have produced significantly better results against far stronger opponents. But India vs Bangladesh has always been a tight contest.

I'm happy with the results. Bangladesh absolutely dominated the first half and had so many great opportunities. Shame we didn't win...

One might wonder what would have happened if he had his way of bringing few foreigner striker to play for us.

Time and time again it shows, we don't even have a semi decent strikers.

If Day can make soccer number one in Bd again, it would be one of the greatest achievements of all time. And many would thank him for it (me included), given how spoiled the cricket team is.
