FIFA announced the ten candidates for the 2006 adidas Golden Ball, the prestigious award for the tournament’s outstanding player.
The shortlist was prepared by the FIFA Technical Study Group (TSG).
Only players who reached the semi-final stage was considered eligible for the selection.
The 10-candidate shortlist is comprised of 3 Frenchmen, 2 Germans, 4 Italians and 1 Portuguese. The Final List is as follows:

- Zinedine Zidane (France)
- Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)
- Fabio Cannavaro (Italy)
- Gianluca Zambrotta (Italy)
- Andrea Pirlo (Italy)
- Michael Ballack (Germany)
- Miroslav Klose (Germany)
- Maniche (Portugal)
