FIFA World Cup Women's Soccer Championship Final - 2011
Tomorrow is the final between Japan and the USA.
I pick Japan as an emerging soccer nation of the East.
Good luck, Japan.

China used to be good in the past, especially Sun, but recently they only have 400 registered women players.

Japan is extemely lucky still to have the score 0-0
US is attacking and missing the net and Japan is simply blocking.

USA passing and defending well but needs to get some shots on target. Only 1 shot on target out of 14 so far.

Congrats to Japan. BTW, does anyone have highlights of the match? I watched only the first half and a little bit of the second half.

The USA played hard and were unlucky to not have scored at least a couple of more goals. They set up some good attacks and had some great attempts at the post. The US defense was also pretty impressive and hardly gave the Japanese forwards any room to maneuver/find gaps. While USA were clearly the better team until the 120th minute, Japan did well to come back twice. The second goal scored by the captain with a flick off her right foot was genius.
The penalty shoot out was just an embarrassment, mostly for the States of course. Good to have a new champion - time for the men to stand up and do something similar now.

^really? The US always wins the most golds in the olympics. And when it comes down to basketball, we always win the world championships. Both men and women.

Good to see a nation winning the cup that knows what it means to be a world champ in football. Many Americans didnt even know that women's WC was on and Team USA was in the final. ..Well done Japan..Credit goes to US team aswell. They have played superb football. Better luck next time

Blasphemy
Thats why the QF, SF and Final have all had better TV ratings than any Mens game that was every televised?
Nothing wrong with 2nd place in the final of that nature, Japan needed something to smile about after there quakes.
We'll get em in the Olympics

When did I say that there is something wrong being second bro? USA is a great team (both men and women) despite having such a weak fanbase...And be honest bro..Do you really think that football is all that here in US? Look at the media coverage that Derek Jeter gets and you can ask an American to name a player of US Soccer team in midwest and you might get your answer..

You said no one knew that USWNT was in the WC and in the Final, When the TV ratings say that the Womens Games did better #'s than Mens.
Derek Jeter the most popular Athlete in the US and just did something that on 27 other players have accomplished in a sport thats been around for 120 Years and the Women got more coverage than Jeter did.
I bet you the Average sports fan in the Midwest can name more USMNT than NY Yankees

you are right about many didn't knew but the percentage of people knew and supported the team were more than that of Japanese i can guarantee that. just look at the tv rating and see what number watched the game were (japan and usa). those days of saying usa fan doesn't know have long gone bro. yes they don't have crazy fans but most knows about it and does follow.. BTW i follow them pretty closely and i don't know a single players name other than solo's, cause that's easy to remember. but that doesn't mean usa team didn't had right to win the cup. We needed this win after 12 years but hats off to japan team. they never gave up and we relaxed too early....

Very sensible post...
Football is becoming popular here in USA no doubt. But you'll still find many (or should I use some?) think that its a game for women and only those who are not good enough to play baseball, basketball or football play soccer..But things wont be the same after 10-15 years for sure...

I know where I live (OverlanPark) is a big hub for soccer. Even my colleagues were excited about the game and all I knew here were too, but I had a relative traveling from Iowa had different opinion like yours actually. I guess opinions are formed where you are living...
BTW we got off from work (but we were in the office) during USA men's game and we all watched the games in the break rooms...
