Profile: On Sept 8, 2001, one day shy of 17 years old, Mohammad Ashraful exploded into the cricket world as the youngest ever Test centurion, scoring 114 on his Test debut against Sri Lanka. A precociously talented middle order batsman capable of playing all kinds of shots in the book, Ashraful has been deemed by many a future star of Bangladesh cricket.

Unfortunately for his fans, he often throws away his wicket from impregnable positions, an ungainly trend often attributed to his youthful impetuosity. The selectors even sidelined him for a while after a dismal performance in the Sri Lanka tour in 2002. He returned to the national team after scoring 108 in the Patron's Trophy for Bangladesh "A", and in his comeback match scored a fiery 98 against Zimbabwe, eventually denied a century by Heath Streak. He has since produced a string of alternate high and low scores - a curious pattern where he shows glimpses of his talent in a tour but fails to show any sign of sustained form.

In December 2004, Ashraful scored his second Test century - a mammoth 158 not out - against the touring Indian cricket team and as a result now holds the record for the highest individual Test score by any Bangladeshi. True to form, he performed dismally throughout his maiden test series in England but came back in the ensuing ODI tournament with a well-paced, match-winning ODI century - his first ever - against Australia. He also hit the fastest fifty by a Bangladeshi in the same tournament, a blitzkrieg of a 92 against England. But Ashraful didn't fulfil his evident potential on the tour of Sri Lanka that followed, a repeated pattern, often getting out to loose shots. He also failed to make impact against Australia early in 2006.

An extended run of poor form forced the management to drop him for the final qualifying match of the Champions Trophy against Zimbabwe. He was also omitted from the squad for the home series against Zimbabwe in December but was immediately recalled after slamming 263 for Dhaka Division against Chittagong Division in the domestic four-day competition. Ashraful hit a fine 87 to help Bangladesh pull off a 67-run win over the then number 1 ranking side South Africa - in the Super Eight stage of World Cup 2007.

Ashraful was appointed captain of Bangladesh in June 2007 at the tender age of 22.
