Nehru/Merdeka - 2 teams, BFF in dilemma
Bangladesh - the other team according to Hindustan Times
Quote:
The house, to a certain extent, has been set in order and things finally seem to be falling in place.
After days of confusion over Iran’s participation in the ONGC Nehru Cup, the tournament format and schedule, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Thursday that the event being revived after a decade will be a five-team round-robin affair and Iran would not be coming.
Not really keen on having a club side competing, the AIFF rejected the continental powerhouse’s proposal to send a club side instead of the main team in the premier tournament that carries a prize-money of $100,000.
“We wanted the Iranian national team for the tournament but they were intent on sending one of their club sides. We were not prepared for that as only performance against national 'A' sides counts towards Fifa rankings,” said AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco.
“As a last-ditch effort, we tried to get their Under-23 side but that did not work out either,” he added.
“We had earlier given them time to do a rethink but since they were not keen on sending their main team, the tournament will go ahead with five teams,” Colaco added.
With the Asian heavyweight not in the picture, it is set to be an evenly matched tournament with teams ranked between 113 and 172. Besides hosts India, Syria, Kyrgyzstan, Cambodia and Bangladesh will be the other teams in the tournament. India will start their campaign against Cambodia on August 17.
Asked about the delay in drawing of fixtures, Colaco said, “The fixtures were drawn long back but we didn’t make it public keeping in mind the interests of the team. “Iran’s participation has got nothing to do with the delay in fixtures,” he said when asked if the Asian giant’s unwillingness to send their main team led to the delay.
Meanwhile, Colaco has said that the AIFF has yet to receive any response from Lebanon regarding the change of dates for their World Cup qualifiers. He said the AIFF has time till August 31 to convince Lebanon to change the dates for the qualifiers that are clashing with India’s first ever professional football league.
“The secretary of the Lebanese federation is out of the country and we will get a response only when he comes back,” Colaco said.

Heavy defeats ahead, pulling of a surprise win against Cambodia is the only hope here. As for Merdeka there is not much hope for the second-tier team with 10 new players.

I doubt we can win against Cambodia, but we better beat India - it will really be a huge disappointment if we can't.
As far as the Merdeka cup is concerned, let's try not to talk about it.

Combodia is a strong team. I am not sure we can compete 70 mintues with them let alone 90 mins. Our only chance of having any respectable result would be against India.

Cambodia is a strong team? Cambodia is the weakest team in the Nehru Cup. They drew 2-2 with Bangladesh in last year's AFC Challenge Cup. They are currently ranked 170th out of 208 countries by FIFA. Not sure how they can be considered strong. Bangladesh is ranked 172, India 162, Kyrgyzstan 152 and Syria 113.
Fixtures for Nehru Cup
17th August - India v Cambodia
18th August - Bangladesh v Syria
19th August - Cambodia v Kyrgyzstan
20th August - India v Bangladesh
21st August - Kyrgyzstan v Syria
22nd August - Bangladesh v Cambodia
23rd August - India v Syria
24th August - Bangladesh v Kyrgyzstan
25th August - Cambodia v Syria
26th August - India v Kyrgyzstan
29th August - Final

I doubt BD can even draw with Syria, while India beat Cambodia yesterday 6 to 0, with Naimuddin's revengeful guts BD can pull up win against India with a careful defensive measure. But seeing sudden rush of goals if Syrian players although deprived of 6 of their mainstream footballers start hunting BD will be put in a clinical test tonight.

And the inevitable happened. BD lost to Syria by 2 goals to 0. Anything useful about this game is BD's defense which made the margin of defeat well below than expected against the mightiest team of the tourney. I hope some dogfight in upcoming matches specially against closely ranked Cambodia and arch rival India.

Merdeka Cup Bangladesh take on Indonesia today
DS link on Merdeka Cup: http://www.thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=887
Excerpt-
Quote:
With the mainstream footballers touring India for the Nehru Cup, it would be a challenge for the second-string national team led by Hassan Al Mamun in a group also featuring Singapore and Zimbabwe.
Although the team have mostly newcomers, the tournament will give veteran and out-of-favour footballers like Hassan Al Mamun, Matiur Munna, Parvez Babu and Saifur Rahman Moni a golden opportunity to impress and return to the senior team before the SAFF Championship.

MODS, why not merge the two related threads?

India clinch Nehru Cup
Agencies, New Delhi
| Indian footballer Pappachan Pradeep is embraced by a teammate as he celebrates after scoring the winner against Syria in the Nehru up final in New Delhi on Wednesday. Photo: AFP | Turbo-charged India scripted history Wednesday evening by lifting the Nehru Cup international football trophy for the first time with a 1-0 victory over a depleted Syria, Pappachan Pradeep's 44th minute header settling the matter for the hosts.
The win, which fittingly came on the National Sports Day, made the team richer by a staggering Rs.4.77 million, the bulk of this announced even as the final whistle blew. The winner ordinarily would have gone home with $40,000 (Rs.1.63 million).
India were in the attacking mode right from the word go in front of a full capacity Ambedkar Stadium where tempers flew in an exciting encounter that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats.
Pradeep's goal came when he drove past Syrian goalie Mowsaab Blahowss after an on-pass from captain Bhaichung Bhutia. A cross from Steven Dias found Bhutia in the box and he headed on to Pradeep, who did not waste any time to head in.
After conceding the lead, the entire Syrian team who won the league match against India 3-2, looked rattled but did not give up till the last minute. Ultimately they had to bow to the grit and determination of the Indian team.
Mahesh Gawli, adjudged man-of-the-match, and NS Manju manned the Indian defence extremely well.
Syria's Wael Ayan was sent off in the 44th minute after he deliberately kicked Surkumar Singh.
At the start of the tournament, Bhutia had said there was realistic chance for India to win -- and he led from the front to prove this right.
"This is the biggest win of my career. We need to keep on playing well and this is just the beginning. This is a good boost for the World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon," Bhutia said after the final.
"We don't play many international tournaments in the country and this win is really amazing given the fact that the last time we played the Nehru Cup was in 1997," he added.
India's best performance in the Nehru Cup so far was a semifinal finish in the last edition in Kochi in 1997. The last time India reached the final of a major international tournament was in 2002 when they beat Vietnam to lift the LG Cup. In 2005, India beat Bangladesh to win the SAFF Cup in Pakistan.
On Wednesday, India looked like a determined lot as they defeated tournament favourites Syria, who are ranked 112 by FIFA against 151 for the hosts.
India coach Bob Houghton was elated by his team's performance and said that the momentum must be maintained.
"The boys played well all through the tournament. The health of a nation's football is identified by the success of its national team. I think if we keep this momentum, we can really do well in the future," Houghton maintained.

Congrats to India and their amazingly fit Himalayan players of Sino-Tibetan stock. Their NFL is beginning to pay off as much as it can. For them or any other South Asian country to be a top 10 Asian side? Not in my lifetime.
We are still lightyears away from beating top sides like Japan, both Koreas, KSA, Iran, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam ... need I list more? Khamakha ei phutbauler pichhe tyaka dhailla ki labh hoitachhe amago?
