Bangladesh unrepresented in Beijing Olympics

In contrast to India's 57 athletes in the olympics Bangladesh have only got 6.
Those 6 are 2 swimmers, 2 shooters and 2 athletes in 100m sprint.
Why has this country failed in sports? Surely this is embarassing that a country like Pakistan have got more participants(21). I think the cause for this is the poor economy

India is sending 57 athletes from a population base of 1,129,866,154. We are sending 6 from a population base of 150,448,339. I don't think the ratios are that far off.

Let's be blunt. What would be the utility of sending of more athletes with no medal hopes? A token crew to take part in a worldwide celebration of sport is fine; but adding more, simply for them to be knocked out in the first heats, seems rather futile to me.

Sadz, you said you believed the economy had much to do with this. While economics might indeed play a part, I think other factors such our population size, genetics, diet, as well as sheer organization, strategy and coaching play major roles in this.

We are largely of common ethnicity, of a genetic pool that's unlikely to produce too many really gifted track and field athletes (there's a reason why the US and recently, Jamaica, tend to dominate the sprints, why natives of certain African nations dominate the long-distance events, and why very few blacks win Olympic-level swimming events). Even India, which has 7.5 times our population and a somewhat more diverse ethnic/genetic pool, produces very few medal winners (13: 5 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze), with the vast bulk of them coming from field hockey. Now there are ways to counter this; China, which also has a rather homogenous ethnicity/genetic pool has demonstrated this by their successes in the olympics. But this requires a level of draconian discipline, organization, management, and strategy, that I don't believe our countrymen are presently capable of.

Frankly, I think it's extremely unlikely that we will produce athletes with, let's be blunt, the bodies, that will win track or swim events. Our chances, while minimal at best, remain in individual skill events (e.g. shooting), at certain team sports, and at events which are not emphasized as much in most other nations (take a look, for instance, at the manner in which China has been pushing for medals in rowing).

Now, we do produce a number of good shooters; but this is an expensive sport (you go through particular types of bullets at an alarming rate, and the specific type of rifles and pistols you require are quite costly). The last time I talked with members of the DRC, they mentioned problems with budgets. And, of course, the situation isn't helped when the Commonwealth and SAF gold and Asian bronze medalist is beaten up by the police to satisfy a Deputy Inspector General's ego.

And I think simply following the travails of our cricket team has shown that as fans, management, and players, we don't seem to have the patience, determination, and long-term strategy required to eventually produce winning teams. So I can't help but remain pessimistic about our chances in the Olympics, and see no reason to send a larger body of athletes than we are at present.

Make sure you keep tabs on how many coming back. 6 are going hopefully 6 will come back. Every Olympic and Commonwealth games we lose few participants. The biggest question is the 6 who are going did they play that sport (professionally)? Last checked many NSC board members have niece and nephews.

The Reason Pakistan got 21 is because I think they are sending just the Hockey team and sprinter. That is representing in only two sports. We are doing in three.

Only some cricketers are exception (Akram Khan, and current squad bhuri ala Mash, SN, Aftab, Ash and others) and current pipeline pacers Dollar, Nazmul etc.

Yes, even 6, is too much for us. Its just for the sake of it.
As mentioned by other already, we used to send more. But the risk of some of them not coming back has forced the the local board to curb back the number.

Thread opener, its not "unrepresented" but rather "under-represented", if you must say that.

And there is absolutely no point of comparing with India in every single aspect of life. Its a mis-match.

6 ? for what ? We can hardly win medals (forget gold) in Saf games? We are FAR behind India, we are behind Pakistan, SriLanka, Nepal. Heck, I think Maldives even crossed us. That only leaves bhutan (with a pop of less than 7 lakh).

In 2006, we finished number 6th behind Afganistan. We all know what Afganistan has been going through. How sporting of us to yeild to them as well. Out of the 216 gold medals, we managed - you guessed it - 3. Out of 719 medals, we managed 52, more then the Afgan's but still puts us at number 5 based on total medals won.

Which takes me back to my second question in this post - for what?
