New Zealand v. BCB XI : Match Thread

I am looking forward to this match. While only a warmup for NZ, it is of huge ramifications for us. In particular I would like to see the following things:

1) Mohammad Ashraful's performance on home soil. I think that he can play either as an opener or middle order...perhaps depending on the situation.

2) Nafis Iqbal creamed the English at home in a practice match, can he do it against NZ and further can he prove that he is one of the very few batsmen who is in form at the moment? Will he get a test cap...I think he will.

3) The same could be said of Aftab Ahmend as well.

4) Shahadat Hossain will play his first match against an actual senior level squad. Can he get a call up? I want to see what kind of defense NZ has for his pace and height.

5) is Nazmul Hossain on the the squad? If so, I would like to see if he can continue with his incredible economy, and can he bowl well on home pitches...can he bag some int'l wickets?

In short, I have never felt so anxious about a practice match. Can Bangladesh turn their fortunes playing at home? Lets find out.

I think I can give you a bad news. The weather could intervene in this 3-day match as we observed last Thursday - a total disaster, not only in the places where the tornado hit, but also to cricket matches where the continuous rain could destroy the whole match.

weather has rarely been on our side, tho the asia cup and ICCCT were excpetions...but here is one thing tho, when the weather is bad, we play well, when it is good, we are crap...at this rate BD will never win another ODI or a test, EVER.

we need divine help with this weather situation. hey, is the borsha season still goin on in BD?

Nah. Barsha is already gone 2 months before. It is the month of Ashwin of Sharat season. But as for the freaky weather of Bangladesh, the monsoon rain can hit anytime during a year. May be fwullah is correct. Whether weather plays a role for our good performance or not, I hate to see our matches wash out cause of bad weather.

According to some weather forecast the rain will continue for a couple of days more. If it's so, we can expect better sunny days.

al Furqaan, I think you forgot to list two more things:

6) How Alok Kapali is going to perform in this match, would he be able to come back from his bad form?

7) How Hannan Sarkar is going to perform, Can he prove himself worthy as an opener?

Good thread. I like to see Ash score big and the weather to stay fine and sunny. I dont understand why the weather is always rainy when Bangladesh is playing. It is a bad oman.

The weather prob was caused due the sudden depression in the coastal regions probably.

The weather stays dodgy in these parts(Bangladesh, Indian states of West Bengal and Assam) in this time of the year. That is the reason why India did not arrange a test at Kolkata against Australia at this time of the year. A test is planned later in the year though, against the South African when the rainy season will be finally over.

We have no way but to live with this rain. However it's much better here in Bangladesh than in Sri Lanka, where rain threatens round the year. RPlaying with rainy intervals is a part of the game, even in England. We need to be used to it.

Damn Thunderstorms. Hopefully they will get a bit of cricket in i would like to see a game of it. Maybe this is good as NZ have no cricket in BD before the tests.

If the rain hit the test match against NZ, it will be bad for BD.
Because BD needs to show a good performance in test match so badly,
not a washout or a draw because of rain.
Hope no matches get interrupt by rain.

bourny means the practice match, not the test. He means a thundershower will leave the Kiwis without having any practice in this soil.

Here is some excerpts from BCB XI Captain Alok Kapali:

"It is going to be a very important match for all of us because the series comes after two disappointing one-day tournaments. It will be a big boost for everybody if we do well in the game ahead of the first Test," said Kapali yesterday adding that he would be aiming for a draw.

"New Zealand is very strong team even without all-rounder Chris Cairns who has retired from Test cricket and injured speedster Shane Bond. But as always batting is our main concern so our focus will be to getting runs from the top-order," he said.


"I'm confident that I will hit form. I have been working hard on improving my batting technique with team specialist Owen Mottau and coach Dav Whatmore. Both have told me to stop playing flicks early in the innings and instead concentrate on batting straight." said Kapali

I think BD players need the practice as much as the Kiwis. The forecast of thunderstorm could well be incorrect. the same site (Yahoo weather) had forecast similar weather( Thunderstorm in my city) and it was all sunny the whole day. I hope the weather forecast for BD on the match days is just as off target.

When is it not very rainy in Bangladesh

Winter season - which is due to come in very shortly - possibly from November to March/April.

However, there are usually some occassional rain during October, but that is due to depression in the Bay of Bengal.

I guess that is why the BCB has arranged the schedule for the NZ tour like - the test series coming first - end of October, and then the ODI series - first week of November.

I certainly dont want rain in the tests. Hopefully if it even rains in the practice match it will be the last rain during a scheduled cricket time until March/April next year fwullah.
