Right now Bangladesh is playing against Czech Republic. You can view LIVE all 4 boards in HERE

Ziaur Rahman and Ahmed Sk Nasir are cornered by the Czech players in their respective boards. Abdullah Al Rakib and Enamul Hossain are giving strong fight though!

If you are referring to the ending position in which Rajib resigned, it is a horrible position for him. Those pawns for the knight give black a powerful bishop which will win him the exchange (26. Rd3 Be4! 27. Nf3 Bxd3 28. Bxd3 Kg8 -/+)

As a matter of fact he played a bizarre opening to begin with, and was never comfortable against the accurate play of GM Vlastimil. 22 Nd3?? momentarily pushes away the black Queen, but is actually a blunder as it traps the other knight with no compensation at all. After 22... Qa5! 23. Nxe5 a6 24. a4 axb5 25. axb5 Qc7 26. Nc6 Bxc6 27. bxc6 Bc5 -/+, black is simply winning.

On a brighter note, Zia played a beautiful game in the 1st round to win with the Black pieces. True that his opponent wasn't very strong, but it was still a very nice game by Zia.

Bangladesh vs Wales will begin in an hour at all four boards. You can view the live progress of all four games(link is in another post). Our boys look pretty stronger than Wales in terms of rating:

1 GM Rahman Ziaur 2535 - Evans-Quek Suan-Shiau 2293
2 IM Abdulla Al-Rakib 2474 - Jones Richard S 2297
3 IM Hossain Enamul 2413 - Kett T 2196
4 FM Ahmed Sk Nasir 2359 - Rayner Francis 2212

Hope for the comfortable wins for Zia, Rakib, Enam and Nasir

Not very convincing victory for Bangladesh. Zia, Enamul and Nasir won their respective games! But Rakib lost to Jones. Standing Tally will be updated soon after round 3.

It'll be interesting to see what happens v the Swiss in the 6th round. Korchnoi is still around at his age but playing will below his rating. The top 4 boards are all 2500+

1 GM Korchnoi Viktor 2601
2 GM Pelletier Yannick 2589
3 GM Gallagher Joseph G 2543
4 GM Jenni Florian 2503
5 IM Forster Richard 2467
6 FM Papa Severin 2411

Any points salvaged in round 6 would be bonus for us.

Here is an interesting game from rounf 4, Morozevich(2785) v Ivanchuk(2705):

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. f4 e6 5. Nf3 c5 6. Be3 cxd4 7. Nxd4 Ne7 8. Bb5+ Nd7 9. O-O a6 10. Be2 g5 11. g4 gxf4 12. gxf5 Nxf5 13. Nxf5 fxe3 14. Nc3 Rg8+ 15. Kh1 Qg5 16. Bf3 Nxe5 17. Qe2 Qxf5 18. Bxd5 Qh3 19. Bxb7 Ra7 20. Bf3 Bh6 21. Ne4 Ke7 22. Qe1 f5 23. Qb4+ Kf7 24. Qd4 Nxf3 25. Qf6+ Ke8 26. Qxe6+ Kf8 27. Qf6+ Rf7 28. Qd6+ Kg7 29. Rg1+ Kh8 30. Nf6 Black wins 0-1

10..g5 and the rest is history

A fairly aggressive game between these two top players.

There was someone who became the GM in the late 80s, who was the first GM from the subcontinent. What is his name ? Is he no longer around ?

How old is Rani Hamid ? I remember hearing her name when I was in school.

You bet! That was a fantastic game. 10... g5, definitely a brilliant move. It is very refreshing to see black playing a sharp line of the caro-kann (I can't find any instance of this line being played before). May be Leko can learn something from this?

She is 50+ for sure. Her eldest son Kaiser Hamid was a national footballer and its about 4/5 years since he retired from football.

On and off... He went on a hiatus during his UPenn days and for a while afterwards. He is back again on the circuit but nowhere near his potential.

Niaz Murshed is a central element of my Chess story. I once beat him in a friendly lighting chess game at his home. Of course, he handicapped himself with 1 minute vs my 5. But still

wow, thats great! Once I saw Niaz playing with 12 people at once. They were sitting in a line and he was walking up and down the row making his moves.

He won all 12.
