Default It takes time to change the cricket culture of a country : An interview with Naimur Rahman Durjoy

It takes time to change : An interview with Naimur Rahman Durjoy
Khondaker Mirazur Rahman

Champion school-cricketer, capable utility player of a team vying for ODI status, captain of Test cricket's youngest member nation on its maiden voyage, owner of the 3rd best innings bowling figures by anyone in his country's first Test match and now a National Selector: Naimur Rahman Durjoy ("indomitable") has done his name proud and served Bangladesh cricket in many roles. In this interview with BanglaCricket editor Khondaker Mirazur Rahman, the man who was arguably Bangladesh's last international-class off-spinner and who now has been entrusted with building on the country's recent ODI and 20/20 successes reveals his thoughts about selection policy, domestic infrastructure, and Bangladesh’s struggle in Test cricket. BanglaCricket members get an exclusive into Naimur Rahman Durjoy's vision for raising the standard of cricket in Bangladesh.

Thanks heaps Miraz bhai for your effort.
That was a real nice interview.
I think his opinion voiced very similar to that of us fans.

Also, its comforting to know they have a plan for our youngsters to be pipelined properly. Guess that means JO is a definite for the NZ test team. And very good chance for our old horse Pilot.

Personally, im very happy to see him touching the subject my own query.
If you remember Miraz bhai, i asked him(or rather Lipu, next time) about our vision for 2011.

Anyways, thanks to BC and Miraz bhai again for thier effort.

Thanks Miraz for your effort. It was an interesting read specially Alok/Tushar question. With so many threads and heated discussion its nice to know something from one of the selectors

Quote:
Naimur Rahman: Every player is different and does not enjoy the same level of success at different levels. Alok was given a good number of opportunities but Tushar was unlucky in many cases. They will be remain in our minds as long as they are working hard and performing in the domestic cricket. Nobody is discarded permanently, there is always a chance to comeback.
Looks like Tushar is ahead of Alok in the race with selector's sympathy ( as they are doing similarly in NCL). However that may not be enough for either of them to make the cut for NZ tour.

Thanks Miraz for your great effort.
Looks like all the old horses (Bashar,JO, Mashud) will be in the NZ tour!

He spoke my mind!!!!

Tushar should still get a full run somewhere before being thrown out, but alok is a lost case.

I like what the man has to say. No one should be disregarded because of age.

Good stuff overall. Hope his colleagues have similar thoughts.

He simply uttered the fact. Alok was given more opportunity than Tushar, but when I had a chat with him about the issue, he looked quite sympathetic to Alok.

I am not sure about Habibul Bashar. His latest injury is a concern. This is an old injury. He must pass fitness. The others are in barring injury.

Thank you Miraz bhai for your hard work. It is nice to see some of the insight of one of our national selectors. I am getting ready for 2011. Allah bachaye rakhley...

Thanks Miraz bhai, this in an excellent interview. You Rock!

I really liked some questions from you and Answers from Durjoy.

Quote:
Zunaed and Imrul have just started playing cricket, they should go through the Academy and A team before getting the national cap for Tests and ODI. Zunaed is a good find for us in the Twenty20 cricket. Both will get their opportunities in due time.
This the perfect process to groom young talented players. The previous selection panel just couldn't get it and they threw the young players from u-19 team to the fire. No one succeeded except Sakib. IF these young players goes through A team or Academy, they will be more experienced and will give us longer service in the international cricket.

Players like Tamim, Mushfique, Mehrab Jr, and some others should've not been selected to the national team before being in the A/Academy team. They just skipped to the top level. If you skip from class 1 to class 10, there is every chance that you will fail in everything. Our U-19 team is like class one for me.

Quote:

This is another thing I was waiting for. I hope they do so. Faruk & co. just didn't want any aged players in the team. They wanted to have teenaged players who can entertain for a little time. Chittagang opener Ehsanul Hoque was performing his best for last 2/3 years but never got the nod from the selectors again despite having problem with the opening slots. I think players like him should get another chance to prove them. They are more matured and experienced now.

Are you sure these players never played team-a/Academy team? Or you meant didn't played long enough in team-a/Academy before playing for national team?

Yes, Fazal bhai, you got me.

They've played very few matches with the A-team. That too against Zimbabwe. Mehrab Jr played a bit more games with Academy and A-team after getting dropped from the National team. Tamim & Mushfique have never been to the Academy team if I remember it correctly.

And I think Tamim never been with A-team. Tamim played 26 List A matches from which 18 of them were Internationals. And other 8 matches he played were in the NCL. He also played 15 FC matches but you know that he played all the FC matches in the previous NCL.

Now what I believe is that they should be sent to the Academy & A-team. This will be good for our team and for them too.

If you think it took time to read it, imagine how long it took to edit. Miraz man I was uptill 1:30 AM on this one! Wife almost banished me to the couch!!! You owe me at least এক কাপ গরম চা :-)

Anyway, I'm glad you were able to get Durjoy to answer so many questions. If you bump into him again, ask him if remembers his matches against Willes in Nirman.

Very good one Miraz bhai
I liked Durjoy's comment where he mentioned - "too much experimentation and thus too many changes in the squads" happend last few years. One of the highlight would be:
Quote:
There is no place for politics in our cricket infrastructure or processes. What happened in the past should remain in the past. No one knows better than me about the ill effect of politics on a player’s career. I personally want to make selection process fair and free from any outside influences.
