Bangladesh to increase stadia capacity for World Cup
The Local Organizing Committee (Bangladesh) for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 convened for a meeting today. Chairman of LOC (Bangladesh) and BCB President AHM Mustafa Kamal FCA, MP presided over the meeting. Convener of LOC (Bangladesh) Dewan Shafiul Arefin Tutul apprised the committee on the recent activities. The following issues came up for discussion:
Development work on all designated stadiums of the 2011 ICC CWC will start by December 2009 with the target of handing over the venues to the ICC by October 2010.
The estimated chair-seating capacity of the SBNCS, Mirpur is approximately 29,000. It will be increased to approximately 35,000. Similarly the chair-seating capacity of the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong will be increased from 18,000 to 25,000. If required the BCB will assist in funding for this purpose subject to approval from the Board.
An international tender will be floated shortly for selecting a reputed event management firm for the opening ceremony of the ICC CWC 2011.
It was decided that a dress rehearsal for traffic management and ticket management will be held on the periphery of the SBNCS, Mirpur during the India-Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Tri-Nation ODI tournament in January 2010.
Representatives of two globally reputed companies with vast experience in e-ticketing at international sporting events are expected to arrive in Dhaka in the first week of December 2009 to give presentations on e-ticketing for the ICC CWC 2011.
From 14 event management companies that had given presentations for conducting the ICC CWC 2011 Trophy Unveiling Ceremony on January 9, 2010 the following two have been short-listed - Asiatic Events Marketing Ltd. and Macomm

best seat is panir tankir upore....is this the etymological history of the phrase "tanki mara" where kajer polas and buas would go onto the roof and flirt near panir tanki?

yeah we knew Bd were going to have world cup games in that stadium for the past 4 years. Yet no initiative for anything be it expansion, fixing existing problems had been taken as of yet. Bahaba goes to BCB. Now they trying to find a marketing team, lol to sell tickets. The price would be high I presume.

SBNS seats a lot. We should make the seating better conditions though.

Seating capacity of two WC
venues to be increased
Staff Correspondent The Local Organising Committee for the World Cup 2011 has decided to increase the seating capacity of two match venues – Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium and Chittagong divisional stadium. The decision was made at an LOC meeting on Sunday.
The seating capacity of the SBNS is approximately 29,000. It will be increased to about 35,000. Similarly the capacity of the Chittagong divisional stadium will be increased from 18,000 to 25,000.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board said if required it will provide funds for this purpose.
Currently we have 35,000 seating capacities at the SBNS. Once chairs are installed there, it will come down to 29, 000,’ said BCB director Jalal Yunus, who also attended the LOC meeting.
‘So we decided to increase the capacity. We will not ask for any money from the government. The additional revenue we will earn from the added seats will be enough for us,’ he said
The BCB director added that they are already working on e-ticketing for the World Cup and thus two internationally reputed Indian firms have been invited for a presentation in the first week of December.
It was decided in the LOC meeting that a dress rehearsal for traffic and ticket management will be held on the periphery of the SBNS during the India-Bangladesh-Sri Lanka tri-nation tournament in January.
The meeting also short-listed two local event management firms – Asiatic Events marketing and Macomm – for January 9 trophy unveiling ceremony. A total of 14 firms had made their presentation and out of them six have been chosen for different works, said Yunus.
An international tender will soon be floated for recruiting an event
management firm for the opening ceremony, he said. The BCB director
also informed that the development works of all designated World Cup venues will be started by next month.

Does the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo measure up to the World Cup requirements?
Not quite but the improvements are minimal compared to the other venues. We have to increase the media box capacity from 80 to 200 and the spectator capacity from 14,000 to 35,000. We intend doing this by increasing the seating capacity of spectators in stands 'C' and 'D'. The wiring in the lighting system also needs to be redone.
Is that actually possible?

Playing games with World Cup venues

Azad Majumder

The National Sports Council has relaxed conditions in putting out to tender the installation of electronic scoreboards in five World Cup venues while the Bangladesh Cricket Board has expressed its concerns about the matter as some criteria laid out by the International Cricket Council have not been adhered to.

The board has sent a letter to the state minister for sports, who is chairman of the sports council, passing the responsibility for any consequence out of the matter on to the National Sports Council.

The sports council earlier in October floated tenders for the installation of electronic scoreboards for five venues to be used in World Cup 2011 in line with the guideline of the International Cricket Council.

The ICC venue inspection team in its report in October said the cricket board must ensure that the specifications and management or maintenance of playing facilities such as floodlights, video display and scoring system are of suitable standards.

The report further said the scoreboard must be able to display all required information and the software to be used should be provided by an organisation that understands the requirement.

The comments in the report have made it mandatory that the ICC standards need to be closely matched or the game’s global body is free to reschedule the matches to some other stadiums, cricket board officials said.

The cricket board accordingly appointed a consultant who drew detailed specifications based on information on performance and experience from various events received from various sources.

The sports council floated the tenders which were scheduled to be closed on November 9. But the sports council later deferred the tenders twice and finally opened the bids on December 15.

The technical specifications and qualification criteria have meanwhile been relaxed, allegedly to favour a vested group, cricket board officials said. The original tender documents said that the software proposed must have been in use in previous ICC events and the manufacturer would need to provide a declaration to this effect.

But the sports council later amended the provision and said the manufacturer, installer or supplier must provide declaration to this effect. Cricket board officials said it was done to give the work, worth not less than Tk 35 core, to people who are unable to get such declaration from any easily accessible installers and suppliers but the manufacturers.

The cricket board in a letter sent to the sports minister on November 25 said it would not take any responsibility in this regard.

‘The BCB believes that the NSC has the sole responsibility for modernisation, development and renovation of the Word Cup venues in keeping with the ICC guidelines,’ the letter said.

The BCB president, AHM Mustafa Kamal, signed the letter addressed to the state minister for youth and sports, Ahad Ali Sarkar.

Asked why the NSC has relaxed the specifications and qualification criteria, its director (planning and development) Abdur Rahman said it was done to allow maximum number bidders to take part in the process.

‘We wanted to give all interested groups a chance to participate in the tender process,’ Abdur Rahman said in his office on Wednesday.

‘We did not want to limit it to a certain group. Before issuing a corrigendum to the tender notice, we also took the opinion of the Central Procurement and Training Unit of the Planning Commission,’ he said.

The NSC official admitted that they did not take the opinion of the cricket board in this regard.

Venue? The whole thing might shift to Oceania. Pray not.
Players are really worried about the current situation in India.

Default Mascot

"Appu", the elephant was the mascot of the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi and almost three decades down the line, the pachyderm has been chosen to perform the same role at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
