What a relief!

Hossa is a very good player but not worth the money he wanted in Detroit. Besides, nobody wanted him after his underachievement in the SCF. Folks are happy to see him go because of the finacial flexibility it offers us. Now we can keep Val and Hudler, AND offer Helm and Conks what they're worth. That'll still leave us with enough money and time to address the Brad Stuart situation better, and go for Kane after the next season when he becomes available.

Bowman can work wonders as long as he's iun total control. We'll see what happens in Chicago ...

7.5 a season is too much. Its more like 15 a seasons since he only plays half. 5 years it self is crazy long for him too...

Like I expected him to get a 3 mil a season + performance bonus (that could go to like 6 or 7 million).

Sohel : Conklin signed with St.Louis. Funny tidbit on him : He has been on the losing team of the last three out of four Stanley Cup teams. Detroit, Pittsburgh and Edmonton ( when they lost to Canes in '06)

Cricman : If Gaborik remains healthy, he is as good as he gets. Imagine the numbers he put up in Minnie with that defensive system. He will have a lot more up tempo style with Tortorella. As long as you have Lundy in net, Rangers can never be ruled out ( sorry IC ). Glen Sather doesn't understand the rules of modern NHL. What's up with these long, high risk, expensive contracts? Are you guys still in it for Heatley? I assume NO.

Bummer (NOT a bad pun on your name bro), not happy to hear about Conks. Solid top of the crease goaltender with the potential to be a number 1. This creates an opportunity to Jimmy Howard of the Griffins to turn it up a notch and show us what he can do. Personally, I think we ought to get a more experienced goalie to back up Ozzie who is set to retire soon. Won't be surprised if Holland makes a move there. People in Detroit like Huet a lot. I do too.

Anyway, I expect Andreas Lilja to get more ice time in the upcoming season as Brad Stuart gets less. He's 33 but fit and doesn't turn over the puck in our zone at critical times, least once per game. I also expect some of the Griffins to get more chances. Kindl is likely to be a regular while Stafford, Kolosov and Pyett get good runs. That kind of exposure definitely helped Ericsson and Lebda.

As far as the forwards are concerned, I expect decent runs for Downey, Andersson, Ritola and Haydar. Mursak, Emmerton and McGrath will need to do better to get similar runs. Leino isn't going back to the Griffins.

Sammy went to the Canucks as expected. More money and higher profile, can't beat that. Wish him all the best.

Recchi and Selanne are set to call it quits after the upcoming season. Will miss watching Selanne play for sure.

People in Detroit are pretty high about 17YO center Landon Ferraro, our highest profile draft pick this year. I'm sure the Griffins will make him as useful, if not better than his dad Ray, the former NHLer. A big Sundin fan, he's known for his fast skating and quick shots. I won't be surprised if he develops into a solid 30 goal scorer for us in about 5 years, and with much better 2-way abilities.

With Khabibulin off to Edmonton, I suppose we have no chance in hell to get Huet. Good to see Leino tied up for a little bit ...

Red Wings re-sign Leino to two-year deal
By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Staff Writer

The Detroit Red Wings held on to one of their own Monday, signing left wing Ville Leino to a two-year, $1.6-million contract.

Since July 1, the Wings have watched as Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky left for Chicago, Mikael Samuelsson departed for Vancouver and Ty Conklin for St. Louis. All this was to be expected as the Wings operate close to the salary cap, but Leino was one GM Ken Holland wanted to keep.

Leino, 25, had five goals and nine points in 13 regular-season games and 2 assists in seven postseason games this past season, his first in North America.

Playing the majority of the season for Grand Rapids of the AHL, Leino posted 15 goals and 46 points during the regular season, then led the club in scoring during the Calder Cup Playoffs, finishing with three goals and 13 points in 10 playoff games. He originally signed with the Red Wings on May 10, 2008.

The Wings also are hoping to get a contract taken care of with restricted free agent Jiri Hudler, who was one of 20 players to file for salary arbitration before Sunday's 5 p.m. ET deadline. Holland is hopeful the Wings and Hudler can avoid going in front of an arbiter by coming to terms this week.

Arbitration hearings will be held in Toronto from July 20-Aug. 4.

Once Hudler has a new deal, the Wings will have 12 forwards, eight defensemen and two goalies under contract for next season.

Holland knew his chances of re-signing any of the Wings' unrestricted free agents were minimal after he gave Henrik Zetterberg a 12-year contract and Johan Franzen an 11-year deal during the regular season.

"We had our July 1 twice this season -- once in January when we signed Henrik Zetterberg and again in March when we signed Johan Franzen," Holland told NHL.com last week. "Add in all the other players we have under contract and we had $2-3 million to play with."

Leino, Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm will take on bigger roles for the Wings, while Jimmy Howard will be given the chance to supplant Conklin as the backup to Chris Osgood. Howard is under a one-way contract for the next two years.

"Leino, Abdelkader and Helm are ready," Holland said. "We think Valtteri Filppula, at age 25, can take a step forward. Jiri Hudler can take a step forward. We have a power forward we like in Franzen and two elite players in Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. The cap world is not designed for you to have these guys and go get a Hossa. The salary cap is working. It's a level playing field."

That was a good pickup by detroit. I was hoping that Bruke would somehow acquire a pick and get him, but he didnt...
