Default The lingering image of Rubel Hossain

Short, slight, fast, skiddy, moves it sideways, in-drifts it, and gets good bounce. And the last Australia probably saw of him was two one-over spells

One way to remember Rubel © Getty Images

Quote:
Rubel bends his back to near-snapping point in his opening salvo at Kohli. That one clears Kohli's head. The next one is also fast and rising, and Kohli defends it, and Kohli fixes Rubel with a black glare. Kohli has eyes like painted glass some days when he bats. Now you see him, but really you don't; this over, it is like we are looking right into Kohli. Rubel bombs three more outside off stump. Kohli defends them, impatience burning, and the one after that is fuller, wider and, suckered in, Kohli edges. It is one way we have of remembering Rubel.

This is writing of the highest accord. I like the way he described the timidity of the security beseeching the spectator to stay away from the black rail. But what was befitting was the latent castigation of Mashrafe Mortaza. Rubel is his best bowler(sorry Shakib) and he bring him at the end when all hell was loose to bowl two one-over spells. It's like Mash doesn't want to see Rubel pillage the Indians during the middle overs. What was implicit was the fact that you don't allow your hot(in terms of riddim) bowler to wither away; what went on? I don't even know. But surely the writer of the article kept on bounding himself to the girlfriend with the seven year old, to him Kohli is his/her role-model. But I would have wished to be in the proximity of this writer when Kolhi's wicket was felled, to see the look of satisfaction on his face and disappointment in the seven year old.

That delivery from Rubel may have altered the course of history for India. Kohli will remember it forever. Until that delivery Kohli was in tremendous form scoring at will at 75 avg in the world cup. When he came to the crease against Aus the game was in the balance, but for some reason I knew he wouldn't last long. His poise had already been disturbed, touch slightly lost, which was enough for him to play a miscued shot which any other day he would've put away for a boundary.
