Need some support about my trip to USA
Hi all, i know majority of the members here are from the US. I'll be visiting Mchenry, illinois for a training. But i'll be arriving at O' Hare International airport in Chicago.
Since this is my very first time to US, i'm pretty confused. how do i go to Mchenry from the airport? on google map, it looks really far.is there a shuttle bus?
one of my colleague went to Las Vegas and he told me that almost the whole city begs for money. He had to tip a lot of money untill he reached his hotel room. is that true about Chicago? do i have to carry lot of single dollars?
how is the security in Chicago/ Mchenry? As you know, i'm working in Bangkok, Thailand and it is one of the safe city. A girl with short dress can walk here at 2am without any security problem.
please give me some advice about do's and dont's. Thanks a lot.

In Chicago, If you are in wrong neighborhood they will not beg money, they will demand money. Keep 20 bucks handy, otherwise they will be angry and angry mugger is not good for your health.

and act casual, don't act like a dumb tourist with map in hand outside in front of everyday.
Mchenry seems to be pretty far away. You would probably have to take a train or some sorta bus from chicago to reach there. When you arrive, ask for all that at the information booth. It's free.

sunny747,
I was just kidding. Contact your Hotel (that you plan to stay) and/or your training provider/host , they may give you useful information how to reach there from the airport.

Best idea is to call the hotel you're staying in, and ask them how far it is for you.
Is this the first time for you in north america? If not, and if you have a license, get a car rental with GPS...you don't need to tip anyone.
For best deals in NA, use www.priceline.com. I know that Mahmood bhai once got a car on 3 day rental for $10 total...taxes in!!!

Found some info.....if you want to take TRAIN:
Catch CTA Blue line from O'hare to Downtown chicago and then switch over to METRA line to go to McHenry......here's METRA's website: http://metrarail.com/Sched/cnw_nw/cnw_nw.shtml#STATION
if you want to take TAXI from O'hare:
FLAT rate taxi from O'hare to McHenry would cost $64 + $2 additional for fuel surcharge of $4 or more per gallon.
More info: http://www.americantaxi.com/rates.asp#mchenry

make sure u bring a camera. its a beautiful city. there r lots of place to visit. take the boat ride for 21 dollars. i think. Don't take a car to downtown. as parking is very expensive. it better to take the tram as u can then see the real chicago and also save money...

I have passed by Mchenry several times onwards going to Milwakee, WI. Very nice place as it seems. There is a huge Bangladeshi community living in Chicago. Some very good restaurants also. Do a google search on Halal restaurant and you should have some phone numbers. From there you can get what you want. How many days you are staying there?
Airport Taxi is the safest but most expensive. Some times hotel provides shuttle services which are cheap and safe. Train should be the best if traveling in a group. That way you see the city also. Do you have an international lincense? That would allow you to rent a car.

Bro Chicago is a much safer city than Bangkok anytime...if you are comparing to other western cities like Bern, Melbourne or Calgary then maybe not.
I have been living in the area for over 8 years and regularly commuted at 2-3 in the morning without any issues. The only trouble area is the south side which is nowhere close to the Ohare airport or the place you are going to.. The downtown and northern part of the city is very safe.
Summer is an excellent time to go, it' amazing by lake Michigan, there are tons of stuff to do, starting with the shopping at "magnificent mile", millenium park, shedd aquarium, field museum, boat trip to a view from Sears towers deck.
For desi restaurants, Devon is a great area. It's dominated by Pakistani/Indian restaurant though....
As for your trip from airport to Mchenry, "Cash$$$" gave you the best option.. both with CTA and taxi..

But be careful of one thing if i must say.
Thailand, like Bangladesh, is right-side driven. And US is left-side.
So your old habit could get u into trouble that you dont want while on a short visit to a country.
I just thought i'd mention it.

I was in Chicago for some training in early 2006. OHare is a big airport. Follow the directions always. Whichever way you want to go there is bus. Dont worry. It would be fun.

sunny bhai, Chicago is a very safe city. It is also one of the nicest cities in the country. Unless you head out to the South Side, which I doubt you will, you should be safe.
McHenry is pretty safe too. Cash$$$ already told you how to get there.
Arro ektu agey ashle ami ghuraiya firaiya dekhaitam, kintu ekhon ami Chicago theke ektu dure thaki. I hope you have a safe and fun trip.
