Liverpool's £8.5m move for QPR striker Loic Remy has collapsed.

The Merseyside club are refusing to comment on the reasons behind the deal falling through but it is understood there has been an issue with the 27-year-old's medical.

Remy flew to the United States, where Liverpool are touring, on Monday.

The Reds' bid had activated a release clause in the contract of the player, who last year scored 14 goals on loan at Newcastle United.

They had planned to give Remy the number seven shirt and he had waited in the US for the best part of a week for the deal to be confirmed. The move will not be resurrected and Remy now faces the prospect of a return to QPR.

Remy was part of the France squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, appearing as a substitute against Ecuador and Germany.

He made 26 Premier League appearances for Newcastle last season but only played four of the final 11 games as he struggled with a calf injury.

Remy moved to Newcastle on loan after QPR's relegation from the Premier League in 2013.

Liverpool sign Dejan Lovren from Southampton for £20m

Liverpool have made Southampton defender Dejan Lovren their fifth summer signing in a deal worth £20m.

The 25-year-old Croatia centre-back joins on a four-year contract and is the third Saints player to move to Anfield during this transfer window.

He had spoken publicly about his wish to make the switch and follows former team-mates Rickie Lambert, 32, and Adam Lallana, 25.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said: "This is a very important signing for us."

Lovren will join up with the squad on their US tour.

He said: "After I played at Anfield last season, I said to myself: 'One day I hope I'll be able to play here for Liverpool'."

Rodgers told Liverpool's official website: "He is a commanding and powerful presence and clearly has leadership skills, which is important - he fits the profile of player we are looking for.

"He is still relatively young, so his peak years are ahead of him and I believe he will improve and progress even further with us."

Saints boss Ronald Koeman says the club are "close" to signing a replacement.

Sterling strike enough to down Olympiacos

Liverpool kick-started their International Champions Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Olympiacos at Soldier Field in Chicago on Sunday evening.

In front of 36,170 passionate supporters for the second match of their United States pre-season tour, Raheem Sterling capitalised on a fortuitous deflection to fire the Reds ahead within five minutes.

Despite their best efforts, the Greek side could not muster a telling response, handing Brendan Rodgers' team a first clean sheet of the summer and three points in the section.

The manager had selected an intimidating team from kick-off, recalling the likes of Steven Gerrard, Sterling and Daniel Sturridge plus handing a maiden appearance for the club to summer recruit Lazar Markovic.

Anticipation was fervent before the action got underway and was ramped up further when the American national anthem was followed by a rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' that every Kopite in attendance contributed to with gusto.

A strong line-up wasted little time in gaining a foothold on proceedings, and it all started with the captain. He slid a precise pass into Sturridge on five minutes and when the No.15 sliced his attempted curler straight to Sterling, the young forward calmly directed past the reach of Balazs Megyeri and into the net for 1-0.

Seeking a rapid response, the Greek side regrouped and Gevorg Ghazaryan had time to shape a long-ranger toward the far corner after gliding along the left flank. Wide, though. Javier Saviola then almost caught the Reds from a short free-kick but was ruled offside.

Trademark trickery from Sturridge inside the right channel of the Olympiacos area carved a glorious opportunity for the striker and brought the contingent of Liverpool fans seated in the nearby stand to their feet. His eventual right-footed blast was off target, however.

Having previously irked Gerrard with what the skipper considered to be an act of simulation, Saviola was booked in the 35th minute for diving in the Reds' penalty box. Markovic's aim was too high when he looked to beat Megyeri after skipping between two tackles.

Superb recovery by Jose Enrique, utilising a last-ditch toe-poke, thwarted the lively Saviola, while Dimitrios Diamantakos skewed wide to the right when afforded a shooting sight before the break, leaving Rodgers' charges one up at half-time.

Joe Allen, Philippe Coutinho and Jack Robinson were introduced for the second period, replacing Emre Can, Markovic and Enrique respectively. But it was the opposition who threatened to register on the scoresheet next.

The dangerous Ghazaryan collected a sweeping delivery across to the left from substitute Alejandro Dominguez, shuffled into room at the corner of the area and crashed an effort over the head of Brad Jones and against the crossbar.

Olympiacos captain Avraam Papadopoulos took a rather more direct approach to goal as the hour mark approached, nipping around the outstretched leg of Coutinho and clipping from distance. But there was no major threat to Jones between the Liverpool posts.

Rickie Lambert entered the fray with little over a quarter of an hour remaining and required mere seconds to work Megyeri with a bouncing hit from 20 yards out, although the 'keeper was comfortable in making the stop. Coutinho struck narrowly wide moments later as the Reds searched for a lead extender.

Ultimately, they did not need it, holding off a late rally from the Greeks to maintain the slender advantage and begin their participation in the tournament with a win.

Divock Origi: Liverpool sign Belgium striker from Lille for £10m

Liverpool have signed Belgium striker Divock Origi from Lille for £10m.

The 19-year-old has agreed a five-year contract but will remain at the French club on loan next season and move to Anfield in 2015.

"I am very happy and delighted a club as big as Liverpool showed interest in me," he said. "I'm very excited."

Origi played in all five of Belgium's games at the 2014 Fifa World Cup during their run to the quarter-finals and scored in the 1-0 win over Russia.

Reds edge City on penalties in New York

Liverpool defeated domestic rivals Manchester City on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in their International Champions Cup clash at the Yankee Stadium in New York.


Stevan Jovetic was the grateful recipient of the move that handed City a slender lead moments into the second half, prompting Jordan Henderson to produce a fine equaliser for Brendan Rodgers' side.

The Blues forward showed strength and composure to restore an advantage for his team three-quarters of the way into the clash, but the Reds levelled late on through Raheem Sterling.

That heralded a shoot-out to decide which team would take two more points in the tournament, with Lucas Leiva sending home the winner to secure a 3-1 win on spot-kicks.

Gael Clichy, operating from right-back, created the opening chance of the fixture on three minutes when he darted inside from the flank and careered into a central shooting position, only to scuff wide.

Jovetic was crowded out at the last moment after collecting a one-two from fellow forward Edin Dzeko, before the latter curled toward the far corner from the left edge of the area but merely found the waiting hands of Brad Jones.

In response, Philippe Coutinho was inches off target to the left with a daisy-cutter from 20 yards, having been picked out by a Jose Enrique centre at the wing that deceived the gathered City defenders in the middle.

Rickie Lambert was left to bemoan a lack of luck on the quarter-hour; Daniel Sturridge fed an onrushing Henderson to the side and the No.14's lofted cross to the back post was headed down by the England international, but Willy Caballero somehow blocked out.

Jones' reflexes were tested by a low Jesus Navas drive, Martin Kelly deflected away a James Milner hit and Bruno Zuculini should have done better than his eventual chip when released into space cleverly by Dzeko. When the Bosnian did find the back of the net shortly after, he was offside.

Kelly was again in the right place at the right time to deny the influential Dzeko, who had been found 10 yards out by Navas. Jones was briefly troubled but ultimately in control when the City striker saw yet another effort deflected high into the air.

Jack Robinson for Liverpool and Joe Hart were among numerous substitutes introduced for the second period and the latter was rapidly off his line in the 50th minute to thwart the former, who poked at goal from a narrow angle after collecting Sturridge's pass.

And three minutes later, City struck. Navas raced along the right touchline - his pace having proven a crucial feature of the encounter - and squared to cause a scramble that concluded with Jovetic forcing home to earn Manuel Pellegrini's team an advantage.

There was almost an immediate riposte when a Steven Gerrard pass fortunately diverted to Coutinho, but the Brazilian's finish was brilliantly stopped by Hart. Sturridge glanced over from the resultant corner.

Nobody could stop Henderson as the hour mark approached, however. Sterling looked for Sturridge and when the ball ran loose, the midfielder made no mistake by curling perfectly past the stretch of Hart and into the top corner for 1-1.

As the pace quickened, Aleksandar Kolarov seemed to have presented Zuculini with a perfect chance to grasp command back for City. Free at the far post, six yards out, the attacker contrived to crash his shot against the crossbar.

With 67 minutes on the clock, they made amends. Jovetic scurried forward, fed Navas wide and when the delivery found its way into the box, the Montenegro international held off the attention of Sebastian Coates to toe-poke underneath Simon Mignolet.

With five minutes remaining, though, Liverpool hauled themselves level. A pull-back to the edge of the area was expertly knocked around the opposition defence by Lucas for Sterling to sprint in and side-foot around Hart, paving the way for penalties.

City missed three of their four attempts, while Emre Can, Henderson and Lucas all converted to hand the Reds top spot and control of the group ahead of Saturday's meeting with AC Milan.

Liverpool complete Moreno transfer

Liverpool FC have today completed the signing of Spanish international defender Alberto Moreno from Sevilla.



The 22-year-old sealed the formalities of his switch at Melwood, having undergone a medical, and becomes Brendan Rodgers' eighth new recruit of the summer.

An athletic, talented left-back, Moreno won the Europa League with his former club last season and helped the La Liga side to a fifth-place finish.

He has made three senior appearances for Spain and narrowly missed out on a place in their squad for the World Cup in Brazil.
