As the start of the ICC Cricket Word Cup 2011 draws closer, the renovation and modernisation works at five different venues in Bangladesh, co-hosts of the landmark event, have been ramped up. The final ICC (International Cricket Council) inspection team is due to arrive here in the second week of December. Though reality shows that work will not be completed by that time, the host tournament director Ali Ahsan Babu is confident that the venues will meet the specific requirements of the world governing body.
"During the inspection, the ICC team is supposed to check some mandatory things like wickets, outfield, players' dressing rooms, press boxes, scoreboards, floodlights and accommodation facilities for the players and officials," explained Babu. "These mandatory requirements are on the verge of completion, and I am confident that they will be ready by the time the inspection team arrives."
Two of the five venues -- the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) and Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium -- will be completed in their entirety only in mid-January, mainly because of additional demands made by local organisers, though all five venues were supposed to be handed over to the BCB by the end of this month.
"As per the tenders, all works at those five venues have almost been completed but we have been forced to extend the works in line with fresh requirements at some venues," said Abdur Rahman, National Sports Council director of planning and development.
Rahman, however maintained that all the remaining three venues would be completed by mid-December.
Among those venues, the BNS will host the opening ceremony on February 17, Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium will stage group matches as well as quarterfinals, Chittagong's Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium will stage two group matches while Narayanganj's Osmani Stadium and Khulna's Abu Naser Stadium have been kept as practice and backup venues respectively.
Apart from new car-parking, stands, extended media centre and post-match briefing centre, hospitality boxes, instalment of chairs on all galleries, floodlights, digital scoreboard, giant screen, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked the NSC to build 12 more corporate-house boxes at the South-Western corner of SBNS in addition to the 10 already in place, in face of increasing demands while the authorities concerned decided to build a 11,000-capatcity gallery at the east side of Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, which currently has a capacity of only 9,000 spectators.
At the 28,000-capacity BNS, 23,000 chairs have so far been installed in the galleries, with work still ongoing on in the VIP and Hospitality boxes. A shower, a four-tonne World Cup replica, terracotta at three newly built entrances, and a giant screen are in the process of being installed at the venue.
The government has already sanctioned Tk 256 crore for venue preparation, and is set to allot another Tk 48 crore for the additional works at these venues, where the renovation and modernisation works had started in November last year.

বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেটের বিকল্প ভেন্যু খুলনার শেখ আবু নাসের বিভাগীয় স্টেডিয়ামে সল্ফপ্রতি যারা যাননি, স্টেডিয়ামের অঙ্গ-প্রত্যঙ্গের নতুন সাজে তাদের চোখ ছানাবড়া হতেই পারে। মাত্র আট মাসে গোটা স্টেডিয়ামের চেহারাটাই যেন পাল্টে গেছে। এক সঙ্গে এত রূপ, তাও আবার অবহেলিত, বঞ্চিত খুলনায়_ ভাবতে তাই একটু কষ্ট হয়ই বটে! আগামী ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যেই পুরোপুরি প্রস্তুত হবে মাঠটি।
আগামী ২০১১ সালের বিশ্বকাপ ক্রিকেটে স্বাগতিক দেশের বিকল্প ভেন্যু হিসেবে প্রস্তুত থাকবে খুলনার শেখ আবু নাসের বিভাগীয় স্টেডিয়াম। স্টেডিয়ামটি পূর্ণাঙ্গ আইসিসি মানের করতে গত বছর একনেকে অবকাঠামো উন্নয়নের জন্য ৫১ কোটি টাকা বরাদ্দ দেওয়া হয়। এই টাকায় ইতিমধ্যে চারটি ফ্লাডলাইট টাওয়ারের মধ্যে তিনটি টাওয়ার, জয়েন্ট স্ক্রিন ও ইলেকট্রিক স্কোর বোর্ড, গোটা মাঠে নতুন ঘাস প্রতিস্থাপন, আধুনিক ড্রেনেজ ব্যবস্থা, মাঠের উচ্চতা দুই ফুট বৃদ্ধি, গ্যালারিতে ১১ হাজার চেয়ারের মধ্যে দুই হাজার চেয়ার বসানো, মিডিয়া বক্স, ভিআইপি গ্যালারি, খেলোয়াড় ও দর্শকদের জন্য আধুনিক সুযোগ-সুবিধা, গ্যালারি এবং মাঠ বর্ধিতকরণ ও বাউন্ডারি ওয়াল নির্মাণ কাজ শেষ হয়েছে। মাঠে আটটি পিচ তৈরির কাজ চলছে বেশ জোরেশোরে।



মাঠের চারদিকে ৬ ইঞ্চি চওড়া করে পানি নিষ্কাশনের ড্রেন তৈরির কাজ প্রায় শেষ। এই ড্রেনের ওপর থাকবে পানি টেনে নেওয়ার জন্য বিশেষ ব্যবস্থা। ফলে বৃষ্টি হলে ওপরের পানি চুইয়ে দ্রুত ড্রেনের মাধ্যমে তা বেরিয়ে যাবে। এর ফলে মাঠ শুকাতে বৃষ্টির পর এখানে ঘণ্টার পর ঘণ্টা অপেক্ষা বা হেলিকপ্টারের প্রয়োজন হবে না। এমন উন্নত ব্যবস্থা এখন দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার মাত্র কয়েকটি ক্রিকেট মাঠে রয়েছে। বদলে যাচ্ছে স্টেডিয়ামের ড্রেসিং রুমও। এতদিন ড্রেসিং রুমের সিঁড়ির ধাপগুলো চওড়া কম থাকার কারণে খেলোয়াড়দের স্পাইক লাগানো সু-পরা অবস্থায় ওঠানামা ছিল ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ। এ কারণে ড্রেসিং রুম দুটির সামনের দিকের গ্যালারি ভেঙে দিয়ে এগিয়ে এনে খেলোয়াড়দের জন্য নিরাপদ সিঁড়ি নির্মাণ করা হচ্ছে। নতুন ড্রেসিং রুমের সঙ্গে থাকবে দুটি পেল্গয়ার ডাইনিং রুম। গ্রাউন্ড ফ্লোরে থাকছে ১৫শ' বর্গফুটের জিমনেশিয়াম। যেখানে খেলোয়াড়দের জন্য উন্নতমানের ফিটনেস মেশিন রাখা হবে। পাশাপাশি খেলোয়াড়দের জরুরি চিকিৎসার জন্য স্টেডিয়ামে নির্মাণ করা হবে অত্যাধুনিক মেডিকেল ট্রিটমেন্ট সেন্টার। যেখানে এক্সরে মেশিনসহ মাইনর অপারেশন থিয়েটার থাকবে। এর মধ্যে বিশেষ ব্যবস্থা হিসেবে রাখা হচ্ছে ড্রাগ টেস্ট রুম। তৃতীয় তলায় নতুন করে ১০টি হসপিটালিটি বক্স নির্মাণ করা হয়েছে।
খুলনা বিভাগীয় স্টেডিয়ামে আগে যারা মাথা নুইয়ে নিউজ কাভার করেছেন, তাদের জন্য সুসংবাদ। সেই বিড়ম্বনা আর থাকছে না। এখানে গ্রাউন্ড ফ্লোরে থাকবে ভেন্যু কন্ট্রোল রুম। কন্ট্রোল রুমের আওতায় থাকবে মাঠের নিরাপত্তা ব্যবস্থা, দেশি-বিদেশি সাংবাদিক এবং টেলিভিশন, রেডিওসহ প্রচার সংস্থার যাবতীয় দেখভাল ও নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিতকরণ পদ্ধতি। চারশ' সাংবাদিক বসতে পারে এমনভাবে তৈরি করা হয়েছে নতুন প্রেসবক্স। তবে প্রথম পর্যায়ে দেশি-বিদেশি ২৫০ সাংবাদিক এ সুযোগ পাবেন। এছাড়া স্টেডিয়ামের বাইরের চারদিকের ড্রেনেজ ব্যবস্থা নির্মাণ, দেয়াল ঘড়ি স্থাপন ও পার্কিং জোনসহ বেশকিছু প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যবস্থাও থাকছে।
মাঠ ও কনস্ট্রাকশন কাজে পারিশা এন্টারপ্রাইজ, ফ্লাড লাইট স্থাপনে বেঙ্গল ইলেক্ট্রনিক্স, ইলেকট্রিক বোর্ড ও জায়ান্ট স্কিন, সিটি ক্যামেরা বিল্ডার্স ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিং ও চেয়ার ফিটিংসের জন্য আইকন আর্কিটেক্ট নামের প্রতিষ্ঠান কাজ করছে।
ভেন্যু ম্যানেজার আবদুস সাত্তার কচি জানান, পুরো প্রকল্প বাস্তবায়ন হলে শেখ আবু নাসের স্টেডিয়াম হবে এশিয়ার অন্যতম আধুনিক একটি স্টেডিয়াম।
খুলনা বিভাগীয় ক্রীড়া সংস্থার সহ-সভাপতি ও কেসিসির প্যানেল মেয়র আজমল আহমেদ তপন জানান, এপ্রিল মাস থেকে স্টেডিয়ামকে নতুন সাজে সজ্জিতকরণের কাজ শুরু হয়। প্রকল্পের মেয়াদ শেষ হওয়ার কথা আগামী ৩১ ডিসেম্বর। নির্ধারিত সময়ের মধ্যে তা শেষ হবে। তিনি বলেন, জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ থেকে আরও কিছু টাকা পাওয়া গেলে একই সঙ্গে গ্যালারির নিচে আধুনিকায়নসহ আরও কিছু কাজ সমাপ্ত করা যেত। তারপরও স্বল্প সময়ে শেখ আবু নাসের বিভাগীয় স্টেডিয়ামকে যেভাবে নতুন সাজে সজ্জিত করা হচ্ছে, তা নিঃসন্দেহে প্রশংসার দাবিদার।

Ad-hoc spending on BNS

The recent government approval of an additional Tk 4 crore to facilitate renovation work at the Bangabandhu National Stadium means that the total cost of reconstruction has moved up to a staggering Tk 35 crore to just host the opening ceremony of the 2011 World Cup.
Cricket's showpiece event will be held for the first time in Bangladesh, jointly with Sri Lanka and India, and it seems that no expense is being spared to spruce up the country's most recognised venue for the visit of luminaries on February 17, 2011.
The Big Bowl has always held a special place in the heart of cricket lovers across and beyond the country, but this coveted status has often meant that a lot of money has been spent on the stadium without significant planning or any thought of returns.
The stadium, built during the Pakistani regime in the 1950s, has in the last twelve years alone consumed upwards of Tk 70 crore for renovation, modernisation or strengthening work. The same amount could have easily built 35 grounds or ten stadiums across the country.
True, the venue is a national obsession and has played host to anything and everything whenever a big occasion came up. But it has never turned into a centre for sporting excellence or a venue people can refer to as "state of the art" because it has always proved the go-to place in case of any event. To assist this, reconstruction and renovations to the stadium were made on an as-and-when-required basis with no specific long-term planning.
The latest change has seen the BNS get an almost complete overhaul with the venue being converted into an all-seater for the first time. Along with that, a revamped VIP stand is being built as well as a two-storied refreshment stand, three new entrances, a special parking area and an additional giant screen along with the existing one, which was put up during the South Asian Games earlier this year.
While most of the changes are generally positive, the question remains of the feasibility of shelling out so much money on renovating the venue for an event that will last just a few hours.
BNS is a multi-purpose national stadium although it has mostly been used for football. Hence, the biggest question mark is about the move to an all-seater stadium as per International Cricket Council (ICC) directive, which will see the BNS be reduced to a 28,000 capacity stadium from its previous 40,000.
All-seaters are a rarity in this part of the world, but the move begets even more question marks when one takes into account Sports Minister Ahad Ali Sarker's recently stated wish of converting the BNS into a 50,000 capacity stadium in the near future.
What, then, will be done with the newly installed chairs?
There are also questions about the new giant screen, which has been reportedly installed at a cost of Tk 5 crore, despite a similar screen that was installed for a cost of Tk 2 crore last January. The older screen has been used sparingly since and the fear is that the same fate will befall the new one in a venue where events of international magnitude are few and far between.
But such lavish and short-sighted spending on the BNS is not a new phenomenon. During the ICC Mini World Cup in 1998, over six crore were spent on renovating the BNS. In the 2003-04 and 2004-05 fiscal years, upto Tk 24 crore was spent on strengthening projects. And an additional six crore were used to renovate the venue ahead of the SA Games. This is in addition to the budgeted yearly expenditure for the venue's maintenance.
There are also whispers in the National Sports Council (NSC) that the renovation works in 2003-04, 2004-05 periods were not done properly as the pillars that hold up the stadium were only recast instead of reconstructed.
The biggest fear, however is that the initiatives taken by sports ministers of both the BNP and AL-led governments showed that they are only interested to constantly renovate this multi-purpose venue rather than create additional venues in and around the city.
The AL-led government in their last term built both the Fatullah Stadium and the Birshreshtha Shaheed Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur at a cost of Tk 22 and Tk 11 crore respectively. Such investments have become an absolute necessity since archery, basketball, chess, cycling, weightlifting, karate, wushu, taekwondo, judo, rugby and gymnastic still do not possess a standard venue as the BNS is shared by only football and athletics.
Many prominent sports organisers believe that this fixation with the BNS has seen many other sports suffer from a lack of opportunity, suggesting that the government should go for a diversification of investments into other establishments to remedy this situation.
There are also concerns that grassroots development is being exempted in favour of the BNS and engineer Abdur Rahman, NSC director of development and planning, suggested that wholesale grassroots infrastructure could be built for a fraction of the money being poured into the BNS.
"At the upazila level, it will take approximately Tk 10 crore to build a new stadium and about Tk 2 crore for a new playground, although the figure will vary when you build a stadium near the capital," he told The Daily Star.
The BNS is the mecca of the country's sport and retains an almost mythical status in the sporting arena. But reality is that it is increasingly seen as a sandpit for short-sighted infrastructural investment that has little or no long-term value.
The greatest fear is that such an obsession with the venue will cause numerous sports in their infancy to suffer badly. And for the stadium that has proved the launching pad for sport in Bangladesh, it would be the biggest irony of them all.

Chittagong divisional stadium

With Zimbabwe already in city and World Cup cricket just 72 days away, the construction works at the Chittagong divisional stadium are nowhere near to completion.
Officials are hopeful that the venue will be ready by December 11 when an ICC inspection is due, but a quick look at the stadium on Wednesday suggested something otherwise.
The media centre and the players’ dressing room are completely finished including the sight screens and the giant scoreboard and the floodlights are fully functional, according to the venue chairman of Chittagong, Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir, also a BCB director.
‘We are working as per the checklist that the ICC inspection committee had given us and we are nearly finished with the checklist, and we are confident that the things they will be looking for will be completely finished,’ said the BCB director.
However, the condition of the stadium still raises some questions and the biggest eye-sore is the
unfinished eastern gallery which starts from the left side of the media centre and stretches right up to the corner of the VIP stand, the workers are still laying concrete to finish the construction of the first tier as the second tier is being prepared for the concrete foundation.
After the construction of the eastern section and when they finish installing all the seats, the stadium itself will probably have a little more than 18,000-capacity, further reducing the number of cricket loving fans.
The grass on the outfield looks to be dried out, because of soil salinity, the BCB is partnering with WASA and the local Fire Service to water the stadium with fresh sweet water. The WASA is spraying water by a few trucks a day as the Fire Service pumping in from a nearby pond.
‘It is not the water we use which is the problem, it is when they laid the soil in the stadium they have probably used soil which had salt in it, now it does not matter how much water you pour in, the grass usually dies up in a few days,’ he added.
The metal dome-shape shade on top of the Grand Stand has been installed backwards and no action had been taken to fix that issue yet, and the debris from the construction is visible all around the stadium.
The construction of road has started around the venue and leading up to the stadium to make it wider and visually appealing to the public which is overseen by the CDA.
Sirajuddin Mohammad Alamgir is still hopeful that even though the stadium might look as if was not ready, but it will be ready ahead of the World Cup.
Talks have started as the third ODI against Zimbabwe which was supposed to be held under floodlights but that could not be as the intensity of illumination did not meet the ICC standard. And since the floodlights at the Chittagong divisional stadium are fully functional and met the ICC standard, so one of the two matches, preferably the last ODI, could be a day-night game.

ICC team due here today

An International Cricket Council (ICC) team visited Eden Gardens on Thursday for a final inspection of the renovation and construction at the venue scheduled to host four ICC Cricket World Cup matches next year.

Having already visited the seven other venues, it was the team's last inspection in India from where they will head to co-hosts Bangladesh.

"We have also seen venues in Sri Lanka. We'll be inspecting facilities in Bangladesh from December 10-14," Samiul Hasan, ICC media and communications operations manager told PTI.

A Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) official said, the ICC team visited Eden Gardens in the morning. They also were to visit the Jadavpur ground, which will be a practice venue during the World Cup.

Andy Atkinson, ICC chief pitch consultant and his deputy David Eugene visited Eden Gardens on September 10 and urged the CAB to speed up the renovation work.

Eden Gardens is scheduled to host four group matches: India v England on February 27; Ireland v South Africa on March 15; Ireland v Netherlands on March 18 and Kenya v Zimbabwe on March 20.

And we never even play at this ground....and they (BCB) keep arranging intl match in Ctg Zohur Ahmed Stadium and repeatedly getting matches washed out, with all due respect and love for Ctg ground with a poor drainage system why doesn't BCB arrange Intl/matches here in Khulna at the above mentioned stadium with such superb facility by Bangladesh standard. Why? Can you believe it?

And Khulna is a very rich in Bangladeshi heritage and glory, it is the home of the Sundarban and the Royal Bengal Tigers, maybe, without causing any further damage to the Tigers' already very shrunken and fragile environ or any kind of eco damage pressure to Sundarban, the Tourism Division and BCB can jointly offer vacation package deal for Dhaka and Chittagong folks and of course folks from the rest of country and foreign countries to come visit Khulna while they attend 2 matches played by Bangladesh and others and also get to visit the wild/nature, the coastal delta, the mangrove jungle, etc. a bit and stay at local Rest House type faciliies.

And who practice and play and take advantage of this pitches, field and ground, all the Khulna's first division, secon division players should be allowed to use this facility every other day of the year when Intl matches or national matches are not being played.

Exactly my thoughts.
Last time Zimbabwe played here a T20 they complained about the hotel facilities stating that the rooms were pretty small.
With all due respect to Khulna, i think BCB should have tried to renovate the ZACS like the Khulna stadium because ZACS is one of the TWO main venues of the WC whereas Khulna is just a reserve venue.

Last time Zimbabwe played here a T20 they complained about the hotel facilities stating that the rooms were pretty small.
With all due respect to Khulna, i think BCB should have tried to renovate the ZACS like the Khulna stadium because ZACS is one of the TWO main venues of the WC whereas Khulna is just a reserve venue.

Not 5 star. There are a few 4 star quality hotels in Khulna like Western Inn, Castle Salam etc.

বাংলাদেশ-জিম্বাবুইয়ে চতুর্থ ওয়ানডে পরিত্যক্ত। বৃষ্টিতে মাঠ খেলার অনুপযোগী। খেলা না হওয়ায় বড় হয়ে দেখা দিল একটি প্রশ্ন। আর তা বিশ্বকাপ ভেনু্যর এই অবস্থা? এখানে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে বিশ্বকাপের খেলা? চট্টগ্রাম জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়ামে আগেও ম্যাচ পরিত্যক্ত হয়েছে, ২০০৭ সালে। তখন এতটা চিনত্মার বিষয় ছিল না। কিন্তু সামনে বিশ্বকাপ। এই স্টেডিয়ামে অনুষ্ঠিত হবে বিশ্বকাপের দুটি ম্যাচ। মাঠ নিয়ে শঙ্কা আউটফিল্ডের বেহাল দশার কারণে। বৃষ্টির পরও খেলা অনুষ্ঠিত হওয়ার নজির রয়েছে। কিন্তু চট্টগ্রামে বৃষ্টির পর দীর্ঘ সময় হাতে থাকলেও খেলা আয়োজন করা যায়নি। কারণ এমন বাজে আউটফিল্ড বিশ্বের কোথাও আছে কিনা সন্দেহ। এ অবস্থায় বিশ্বকাপের ম্যাচ নিয়ে শঙ্কা উঠেছে তা অবশ্য দূর করার চেষ্টা করলেন কিউরেটর জাহিদ রেজা বাবু। তাঁর কথায়, 'আসলে বিশ্বকাপের ম্যাচ নিয়ে এখানে কোন সমস্যা হবে না। তখন পুরো মাঠকেই ঢেকে দেয়ার ব্যবস্থা থাকবে। সময় আছে।' তাঁর কথা যদি সত্যি হয় তাহলে বিশ্বকাপের ম্যাচ ভালভাবেই হবে এই স্টেডিয়ামে। আজই আইসিসির পরিদর্শন টিম এই স্টেডিয়াম পরিদর্শন করতে আসছেন। কিন্তু অন্য সব বিষয়েই সমস্যা সৃষ্টি করছে। বৃষ্টি হলে আউটফিল্ডে পানি জমে যায়। যার নিষ্কাশন ব্যবস্থা বলতে গেলে একেবারেই দুর্বল। ঘাস ছেঁটে তা মাঠেই ফেলা হয়। অনেক স্থানে আবার ঘাস বড় বড়। কাদা জমে যায়। যে কারণে সেখানে ভারি কোন জিনিস পড়লে আরও অসুবিধার তৈরি হয়। এই অসুবিধার সঙ্গে যুক্ত বিশ্বকাপের আগে কোনভাবেই এর প্রতিকার নেই। বাবুই তা জানালেন, 'বিশ্বকাপ শুরম্ন হতে বেশিদিন নেই। এর আগে যেসব অসুবিধা রয়েছে তা দূর করা সম্ভব নয় বললেই চলে। তবে পুরো মাঠ ঢেকে রাখলে খেলা ভালভাবেই চালানো সম্ভব। বৃষ্টি হলেও কোন অসুবিধা হবে না। কিন্তু এরকমটিও যদি না করা যায় তাহলেই অসুবিধা।'
কি অসুবিধা? জানাচ্ছেন কিউরেটর, 'অসুবিধা বলতে বৃষ্টি হলে যদি মাঠ ঢেকে রাখা না হয় তাহলে এক স্থানে কয়েকজন ক্রিকেটার থাকলেই সেখানে পা পড়লেই কাদা মাটিতে ডেবে যাবে। ঘাস বাইরে ফেলার ব্যবস্থাও তেমন নেই। এক স্থানে ঘাস ছেটে ফেলা হলে অন্য স্থানে যুক্ত হচ্ছে। এমন পরিস্থিতিতে আউটফিল্ড ভাল হওয়ার সম্ভাবনা নেই, যদি পুরোপুরি ঢেকে ফেলা না যায়। তবে তা সম্ভব। আর তাই বিশ্বকাপের ম্যাচ মাঠে গড়াবে অনায়াসেই।' আউটফিল্ড নিয়ে জিম্বাবুইয়ে কোচ এ্যালান বুচার ও বাংলাদেশ স্পিনার আবদুর রাজ্জাকের কণ্ঠেও খানিক হতাশার সুর। বুচার বলেন, 'বৃষ্টি হয়েছে। আবার থেমেছে। আলোও দেখা গেছে। কিন্তু আউটফিল্ড খারাপ থাকাতেই ম্যাচটি হলো না। একটি ম্যাচ এভাবেই চলে গেল।' রাজ্জাক বলেন, 'ম্যাচ হলে অবশ্যই ভাল হতো। আমরা প্রস্তুত ছিলাম। কিন্তু আউটফিল্ড খেলার অনুপযোগী থাকায় খেলা আর হলো না। এ নিয়ে নিশ্চয়ই ভাববে কর্মকর্তারা।' সব মিলিয়ে ম্যাচ হলো না কাল। আর সেই না হওয়ার পেছনে দায়ী স্টেডিয়ামের আউটফিল্ড। সেখানেই সবার মনের ভেতর শঙ্কা। প্রশ্নও, আদৌ বিশ্বকাপের ম্যাচ এখানে হবে?

বিসিবিকে সতর্ক হওয়ার ইঙ্গিত দিলো সাইট স্ক্রিন পতন

চট্টগ্রাম: ভাঙ্গনের শব্দে আতঙ্ক ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। খানিক সময়ের জন্য থমকে দাঁড়ায় জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়াম। আইসিসি ভেন্যু পরিদর্শকরা একদৃষ্টিতে তাকিয়ে থাকেন ট্রাইভিশন সাইট স্ক্রিনের দিকে। এলুমুনিয়ামের পাতগুলোর পতন ক্যামেরা বন্দি করেন।

সুইডেন থেকে আনা অত্যাধুনিক সাইট স্ক্রিন বিকেলে প্রতিস্থাপন করতে না পারায় প্রযুক্তি ব্যবহারে বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজকদের দুর্বলতা লুকানো যায়নি। অনাকাক্সিত এই ঘটনা আইসিসির ভেন্যু পরিদর্শক দলকে কিছুটা হলেও বিরূপ ধারণা দিয়েছে। তারওপর মাঠে পানি নিষ্কাশনের সুব্যবস্থা নেই।

স্টেডিয়াম চত্বরে এবরো-খেবরো হয়ে আছে মাটি। জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়ামের প্রধান ফটক দিয়ে ঢোকার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে নেতিবাচক প্রভাব পড়তে বাধ্য। সেজন্যই বোধহয় বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ড কর্মকর্তারা পরিদর্শক দলের পাশে পাশে থেকেছেন। মাহাবুবুল আনাম, আহমেদ সাজ্জাদুল আলম, এনায়েত হোসেন সিরাজ, জালাল ইউনুস, গাজী আশরাফ হোসেন লিপুসহ বোর্ড পরিচালকদের একটি বহর সার্বক্ষণিক সময় দিয়েছেন আইসিসি প্রতিনিধিদের।

এছাড়া চট্টগ্রাম বিভাগীয় ক্রিকেট কর্মকর্তা, জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ এবং বিসিবির সিইও উপস্থিত থেকে দুর্বলতাগুলো লুকানোর চেষ্টা করেন। বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজক দেশের কাছ থেকে আপ্যায়ন পেয়ে ভেন্যু পরিদর্শকরাও কিছুটা নমনীয় না হয়ে পারেননি। আইসিসির মিডিয়া ম্যানেজার সামিউল হাসান তো বলেই দিয়েছেন জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়ামে বিশ্বকাপের খেলা হচ্ছে,“আমি আশা করি এই মাঠে ইংল্যান্ড এবং বাংলাদেশের খেলা উপভোগ করবেন দর্শকরা।”

ভেন্যুর ভালো মন্দ নিয়ে মতামত প্রকাশের ক্ষমতা প্রতিনিধি দলকে দেয়নি আইসিসি। সেকারণে শনিবার চট্টগ্রামের মূল ভেন্যু পরিদর্শন শেষে বিস্তারিত বলতে অপারগতা প্রকাশ করেন সামিউল হাসান।

বিশ্বকাপের ১৫ দিন আগে আইসিসিকে ভেন্যু বুঝিয়ে দিতে হবে। এর আগেই সব কাজ শেষ করতে হবে বাংলাদেশকে। ভেন্যুর মালিক জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদের পরিকল্পনা ও উন্নয়ন পরিচালক আব্দুর রহমান জানিয়েছেন ক্রিকেটের সর্বোচ্চ সংস্থার বেঁধে দেওয়ার সময়ের আগেই বিশ্বকাপ ভেন্যুগুলো পূর্ণতা পাবে।

২০১১ সালে ক্রিকেট বিশ্বকাপের সহ-আয়োজক বাংলাদেশ। ভারত এবং শ্রীলঙ্কার ভেন্যু পরিদর্শন শেষে বাংলাদেশ সফরে এসেছে আইসিসি প্রতিনিধি দল। শুক্রবার উদ্বোধনী অনুষ্ঠানের ভেন্যু বঙ্গবন্ধু স্টেডিয়াম দেখার পর সন্তোষ্টি প্রকাশ করে। শনিবার দেখে চট্টগ্রামের দুটি মাঠ। এখানেও আপত্তি তোলার মতো কিছু পায়নি তারা।

আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবে মাঠ বুঝে নেওয়ার আগে ফের পরিদর্শন করতে পারে আইসিসি। ভেন্যুতে সামান্য সমস্যা থাকলে সেগুলোও শুধরে নেওয়া হবে বলে জানান সামিউল হাসান।

আইসিসি প্রতিনিধি দলের প্রতিবেদন গণমাধ্যমে প্রকাশ করা হবে না। স্থানীয় আয়োজক কমিটি, বিশ্বকাপ কেন্দ্রীয় আয়োজক কমিটি এবং আইসিসিকে দেওয়া হবে বলে জানান সামিউল। অতএব বড় কোন সমস্যা ধরা পরলেও গোপনে সেরে ফেলার সুযোগ পাচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ড।

সে যাই হোক সাইট স্ক্রিন ভেঙ্গে পড়ার ঘটনা বিসিবির জন্য আগাম সতর্ক বার্তা। খেলার সময় এমন অনাকাক্সিত ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি ঘটলে সত্যিই দুর্নাম হয়ে যাবে। যার প্রভাব পড়বে ২০১৪ সালে টি-টোয়েন্টি বিশ্বকাপ আয়োজনের ওপর।

ভিআইপি গ্যালারিতে ১৫ ফুট দৈর্ঘ্যরে একটি শেড দেওয়ার কথা ছিলো। সেটি গিয়ে বসেছে অন্য জায়গায়, ছাদের ওপরে। অথচ মূল নকশায় ছাদের ওপরে শেড রাখা হয়নি। হসপিটালিটি বক্সের কাঁচের পুরুত্বও নির্ধারিত মাপের চেয়ে দেড় মিলিমিটার কম। নকশায় কাঁচের পুরত্ব দেখানো হয়েছে পাঁচ মিলিমিটার।

জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ (এনএসসি) থেকেই নকশা করা হয়েছে। নির্মাণ প্রতিষ্ঠান সেগুলোকে বদলে দিয়েছে। এনিয়ে বিকার নেই ক্রীড়া পরিষদের। এনএসসি পরিকল্পনা ও উন্নয়ন পরিচালক আব্দুর রহমান শনিবার জানান,“আগে নকশা ভিন্ন থাকলেও এখন সেটা নেই। ছাদের ওপরই শেড থাকবে।”

জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়ামের বড় সমস্যা হলো পানি নিষ্কাশনের সুবস্থা রাখা হয়নি। স্টেডিয়াম সংস্কারের অন্যতম অংশও ছিলো ভূগর্ভস্থ পানি নিষ্কাশন ব্যবস্থা করা। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ডের আবেদনের প্রেক্ষিতে সেকাজে হাত দেওয়া সম্ভব হয়নি বলে জানান আব্দুর রহমান।

বলেন,“প্রায় ১০ মাস আগে বিসিবি আমাদেরকে চিঠি দিয়ে জানায় ভূগর্ভস্থ ড্রেনের কাজ হাতে নিলে উইকেট রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ সম্ভব হবে না। সেক্ষেত্রে বিশ্বকাপের খেলা আয়োজন করা যাবে না। বিশ্বকাপের পর ড্রেনের কাজ শুরু হবে।”

জহুর আহমেদ চৌধুরী স্টেডিয়ামের পশ্চিম গ্যলারির কাজ শেষ, রংবেরঙের চেয়ার বসানো হয়েছে। শুধু পূর্ব গ্যালারির কাজ শেষ হয়নি। ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে গ্যালারির কাজ শেষ করা সম্ভব হবে বলে জনান এনএসসি পরিচালক। স্টেডিয়াম চত্বরের কাজও জানুয়ারির আগে সম্পন্ন করা যাবে বলে জানান রহমান।

চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্বকাপ ভেন্যুতে ১৮ হাজার চেয়ার বসানো হবে। অর্থাৎ ১৮ হাজার দর্শক খেলা দেখার সুযোগ পাবেন।
