Thanks for opening this Zee.

This is my first 4th of July without US citizenship in 25 years, because I'll be running for the Parliament here in a few years, and I feel profoundly sad. It felt like this when Clara and I broke off our engagement after years of living together and spending some of the more special days without her.

A part of me will always be American and proud, and it's remarkably easy for me to visit my family and friends the USA whenever I want to, but I still feel like an outsider looking in for the first time in a couple of decades.

Happy 4th of July everyone. GOD bless you all and may GOD bless the United States of America. Thank you for taking me in America, and making me a better man, a better Bangladeshi and a better submitter to GOD. You're ever present in my life and I am blessed to die with the knowledge that you're right here in my heart.

I opened it half in jest. But I am touched by the sincerity in your voice. Thanks... now it really is a thread.

America the Beautiful

Words by Katharine Lee Bates,
Melody by Samuel Ward

***
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern impassioned stress
A thoroughfare of freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for halcyon skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the enameled plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till souls wax fair as earth and air
And music-hearted sea!

O beautiful for pilgrims feet,
Whose stem impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till paths be wrought through
wilds of thought
By pilgrim foot and knee!

O beautiful for glory-tale
Of liberating strife
When once and twice,
for man's avail
Men lavished precious life!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till selfish gain no longer stain
The banner of the free!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
Till nobler men keep once again
Thy whiter jubilee!

I'm talking about the setting....not just the actual pyrotechnics. If I wanted to wank over fireworks, I'd go to China or something...they have some absolutely mental shows.

But try to imagine the setting around DC...all the museums, the memorials, the monument standing proud against the night sky to let the rest of the world know...

AMERICA F YEAH!

...the Potomac shimmering, and then boom(no, not another terrorist bombing, I mean the fireworks).

Your retirement village in Miami does not compare.

I've been to Miami about 7-8 times.

Other than some of the Mid West and Alaska, there isn't a state I haven't been too. I've even been to Idaho. Not that, I'm too keen on going back...

This thread being example of another Pax Americana manifest destiny to spread the peace of love around world has not been shut down already. There are nearly 200 countries, and can we really afford an Independence related thread on all countries? Why should this particular superpower enjoy more freedom?

Vote to ban op.

I have spent more than half of my life in the US (starting from age 16). At heart I have been a citizen many years before becoming one officially. People around the world can criticize US as much as they want, but the truth is there is not a country on the face of the earth that provides as much empowerment to its citizen as US. Be it in rights, liberty, education, or just being yourself. No one is even close.

As humans, all of us have some flaws. A country is no different. I am sure there are many things US can do better; but trust me, with the might that US possesses, any other country would have been corrupted ages ago. Everyone can criticize the bearer, but only the "Ring" bearer knows its burden.

At heart I still love Bangladesh; but I have learned how to share that love with US as well. It is my country as much as Bangladesh is. Both of them have given me a lot, and I try to give back as much as possible. It pains me to see that guy who stands on the intersection with the sign "Lost Job, Hungry Family", as much as it pains me to see a hungry face from my native land. I try and help whatever I can afford. Humans, world over, want simple things in life: food, shelter, security and liberty. US is still a beacon of light for these basic necessities.

Happy Birthday to the country that has given so much to the world.

God Bless America.

Why wouldn't He bless us, we have put our trust in Him.

Nasif, I like how you hyperlinked In God we Trust.

Perhaps an apt citation of /nogopal would have been appropriate?
