Nonsense headline and nonsense story.

CI have made clear on numerous occasions players have to come here and play domestically and A cricket to earn a spot. Sean Terry gave up a county gig to do so and is still doing so, Tim Murtagh who has for years been lead bowler in the 4 day games in county cricket spent a WT20 and other games carrying drinks before he got a shot. The likes of Hamish Marshall could have been picked and were qualified but werent selected. We're not the Netherlands who bend over for any foreign cricketer looking for a match.

If they scout Irish qualified cricketers abroad and ask them to come here to play and earn a spot and they do so, I see nothing wrong with that.

Use of the word poach here is moronic. If England do it theyre denying a smaller nation a star cricketer they badly need purely through the fact theyre a bigger fish. If Ireland do it theyre offering someone with Irish ancestry (only people liable for an Irish passport would qualify for being "poached" to my knowledge) the chance to play at a level he wont reach with his home nation. Massive difference.

CI is going to screw themselves with that mentality. It's tough to ask any player to give up county money or Australia domestic money to come and play in Ireland. Ireland is a country of 4 million and cricket isn't even in the top 3 most popular sports. The best thing to do short term would be to lure English and Australian players of Irish lineage for int'l cricket, but still allow them to make money through the more lucrative domestic setups.

I am against it,they should bring their youth through.
They shouldn't follow NZ and England in poaching.
They need 2 pick their young players and stick with them, its not as if they are winning with them anyway.

This maybe good for them in the short term, they can get players with Irish descent living in the UK and give them a chance to play for Ireland at Test level. County cricketers can finally get an international job , will also inject quality talent into the side very rapidly, who knows maybe in the future a Ireland team composed of UK,Aus,Dutch may even beat Bangladesh in the future.

It's easier said than done. We are talking about a population of 4 million, where cricket takes a back seat to soccer and rugby. And is also a sport that's already stigmatized as an "English" game. That's not a very large pool of players to choose from that can play international cricket.

They have a multi million dollar cricket Academy funded by an Indian industrialist,so they should trust the system.
Australia have made their success on locals as have India and other countries.
England is a mess of poaching,as is New Zealand.
Its not a good look.
Would hate to see Nick Larken to leave the bastions of NSW success to build a future in Ireland.
As I would any Australian player.
It shames me 20 local players are plying their trade in county cricket instead of fighting for the baggy Green.

It will take a long time to cultivate international level players through cricket academies. I don't see why they shouldn't, for the short term, "poach" players from other countries.

Success breeds success. A few wins here and there, particularly against England, and the local Irish boys might be more inclined to play cricket.

For now, they should fix their drainage and weather if possible - or plan for some indoor facilities. Players won't come if weather interrupts every match ...

Goal needs to be a system that creates test quality players but it's better to poach now to have a competitive team than to go into matches with a team that will just get smashed, not good for world cricket or the development of cricket in Ireland imo.

Very good. Why should the English be the only poachers? Ireland has the right to poach players as well.

In fact, they can poach guys from us as well. I will happily trade Mushfiqur Rahim for a pint of Guinness. Chirpy leprechaun, you got him. Will fit your mascot perfectly.

Looks like someone is too afraid of Ireland beating us in the future.

Ireland enjoys the highest development index rating out of all the test playing nations. Afghanistan has the lowest. If I'm a Zimbabwean or Afghani, I can continue to play for my volatile nations or I can play for Ireland and secure a better future for my children. I can continue to be a second rate Australian/New Zealand/English player, or I can play international cricket for a similarly developed and attractive country.

Immigration happens all the time. Why is it wrong for cricketers to do it just because they lost out on the lottery of birth?
