Default i speak bangla

yeah, i can speak bangla, tho i cannot read or write it. however someday i wish to learn to be literate but it is hard to learn an old dog new tricks (i am 21).

as child, growing up in canada and then later the US, my parents spoke only in bangla and so until i started school, i spoke in only bangla; i hardly knew any english. english is actually my second language. anyways, since that time i speak bangla very well for an american desi, but i do have an accent. i've been to BD several times and got ample opportunities to speak with my cousins, relatives, and servants in bangla, so i can get by. however, i cannot understand any of the suddho bangla, the junk they use on the news and other BTV programs.

thougth that might clear some things up. achha tale, pore kotha hobe. allah hafiz.

I don't understand, which part of Shuddho bangla do you not understand (of BTV)?

Your one line bangla in the quoted sentence is pure shuddho bangla, except for the word 'tale', of which the shuddho bangla is 'tahole'.

I am asking just for the sake of curiosity, so please don't be offended in any way.

By the way, did you know that "faal (regional accent)" means "laaf (proper bangla)" (to jump)? For some long years, I couldn't understand what this faal meant, when my cousins back at my village used to use the word 'faal'.

Default suddho bangla

i just dont understand all the big words they use in the news and other programs.

last summer (may-june 2003) when i was there i would listen to the news and the only thing i understood was "aj iraqe..."
("today in iraq") or "aj president bush bolche" ("prez bush said") or "aj khaleda zia", you get the point. thats all i understood from those sentences. they use words that unless you have a formal education in bengali you will not have in your vocab. as an ABCD, you must remember that my bangla language skills are only up to a 2nd grade level, which is enough to get by on and communicate on a everyday basis, but isnt sufficient for doing intellectual things in BD.

Well they don't really use big words in the news programs. They use the same stale, bureaucratic words.

Besides, you have no right to complain since you yourself admit to have no more than very primary knowledge of Bangla.

A poor American guy from Iowa will say the same thing about my English being too highbrow. Actually, I have been called highbrow by a lot of my college educated friends, for reading the New York Times and other newspapers and for trying to engage them in intellectual discussions.

Relative stupidity is universal.

Yuck!

Farqaan, the key is to listen carefully. I find that once you first hear words you don't understand you tend to tune yourself out. If you keep listening, in most cases you can figure out what they are saying by the context.
