Matty Hayden didn't care - 380, and against Zimbabwe too...haha.
Interesting thread title.

I really wanted Clarke to break Hayden's record, if not Lara's one.

Taylor says Clarke shows true colours
Mark Taylor says the real Michael Clarke was revealed when the Australian captain chose to declare and not chase the world record individual score in the second Test against India at the SCG on Thursday.
Clarke's declaration at 4-659 with his own score 329 not out drew comparisons with Taylor, who declared in Pakistan in 1998 with his own score on 334 as he refused to go past Sir Donald Bradman's personal best. The 30-year-old Clarke has long been a polarising figure in Australian sport, but Taylor says the skipper deserves respect for selflessly putting the team before personal ambition.
Leading from the front, the skipper declined the chance to join Taylor and Sir Donald and decided not to pursue Matt Hayden's Australian record 380 or Brian Lara's world mark of 400 not out. With nearly half the match still to play when he declared, Clarke had plenty of time to chase the milestones and, in all likelihood, still allow more than enough time for Australia to win the Test.
But Taylor said Clarke showed how much he values his job as Australian skipper by declaring, even though an excited SCG crowd of over 30,000 was willing him on to 400-plus."He's a guy who loves the game of cricket and I don't think people have quite understood that with Michael," said Taylor.
"He had an opportunity to make the world Test record today, there's no doubt about that. He needed another 72 to break the record."He could've done that and still had two days to bowl India out and win this Test match."He could've achieved both goals but what he wanted to say is 'yes, I want to do well myself, every player does and that's human nature, but I want to captain a side that's going to win first'."A lot of people focused on the negatives of Michael Clarke, but now he is the main man, I think we're starting to see the real Michael Clarke."
Taylor said the toughest thing about batting through for a triple century was the battle for concentration and the drive to keep on going. In the 100th Test played at the historic SCG, it was fitting that a Sydney boy-cum Australian captain should post the highest-ever score and the first triple century made at the venue.
It was also the highest individual score in the history of India and Australia Test matches.Despite just one wicket falling in nearly two days, the 30,000-plus crowd remained enthralled throughout.Taylor believes Clarke may have opted to bat onto 334 before declaring had drinks not arrived first.

I found his decision to declare slightly baffling to be honest, because there was so much time left in the test match. If he had batted the whole of day 3, India would have had to bat 2 full days to save the match.
Now, if India bats for 2 full days NOW, I think they are STILL going to save this match. So what's the difference?

I wouldn't go that far, but had Ricky Ponting been the captain, I think he would've allowed Clarke to break Lara's record. Being the new captain, there was probably extra pressure on Clarke to show "selflessness".

Amazing innings. He came at 37-3 and took his side to 659-4. He destroyed, mutilated, shredded Indian bowling attack to pieces.
If only our batsmen could bat half as good as him

lol bowlers.
Hey Shefug, your bowlers can't even take 5 wickets, forget 20. Once the old man Zaheer takes couple of early wickets and gets tired, it all becomes a big JOKE.

The innings was chanceless. Not a single shot, from defending to driving to leaving, there was no "uhhh-aahh" from the bowlers. He did play one across when he tried to score some quick runs after going past 300. And the way he converted his hundred into a triple was simply class. Never lost his concentration. Never saw Clarke as that type of batsman. Captain Clarke.
In fact all 3 batsmen played a safe innings. Hussey was aggressive of them, so he played few risky shots. And other than the shot Ponting played to get out to (and his dive on 99*), it was a perfect 600 odd runs.
