Bangladesh gets new four-day competition

A new four-day cricket tournament called the Bangladesh Cricket League will kick off on December 27. The franchise-based tournament will be played between four teams, split by regions.

Walton Central Zone, comprising players only from Dhaka Division and Dhaka Metro, Prime Bank South Zone (Khulna Division and Barisal Division), Islami Bank East Zone (Sylhet Division and Chittagong Division) and BCB North Zone (Rangpur Division and Rajshahi Division) will take part in the competition. Three of the four teams have been bought by companies but the fourth, North Zone, will be run by the BCB because it had no takers.

Interestingly BCB north zone looks the strongest and there is NO sponsor for it! Only person can stop them from winning the trophy is Enamul Haq Moni!

Regarding the competitiveness of the tournament Naimur Rahman said that, "The match fees and other allowances will be higher than the National Cricket League (NCL) and in the long run the country's cricket will be benefited as players will fight harder in the NCL to be picked for the BCL." I do agree with him.

Where is Abu Jayed? I thought top performers from NCL will get selected. I know Jayed didn't play every single game but I'm sure he had a better season than someone like Sharif. Or are they not picking U19 players?

It's sad that Nazmul can't even get a team in this tournament. Akram khan er moto mama thakle eto din e ekta team er captain hoye jeto.

Nafis Iqbal captain of easten zone ! Is it a joke ? Franchises has given money. Definitely they want their team champion. I am sure they will not tolerate any discrimination.

^ so let me get this right. Franchises are paying money to sponsor the team but BCB get to select the players for each teams? How is that even a franchise based league? Its suppose to be like BPL, franchises get to make all the decision.

The squads for the newly-designed franchise-based 4-day cricket league named Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) were announced yesterday by the respective franchisees.

Tigers skipper Mushfiqur Rahim will lead the BCB North Zone, his deputy Mahmudullah Riyad will lead the Walton Central Zone, former national all-rounder Alok Kapali has been named captain for the Islami Bank East Zone while experienced left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak has been named captain of the Prime Bank South Zone.

All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, opener Tamim Iqbal and pacer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza were the notable absentees from the teams. This is not franchisee. I believe the word put mistakenly by enthusiastic sports reporters who are all excited already by the BPL fever. Calling it sponsorship would be more appropriate. Besides, even if there was an option for team management to pick players, they would be limited to the two regional teams which are assigned for that specific zone. So involvement of sponsors in team selection process would have created extra jolt and more unnecessary work IMO.

Some players like Alauddin Babu, S N, Mahbubul Alam , Nasiruddin Faruk, Dollar, Mizanur Rahman all have failed to make the squad. It indicates all competitive squad. Hoping for a quality cricket .

S N played only 2 matches in this N C L. Despite being available he did not played adequate matches. My speculations is not playing in N C L was cause behind his drop.

How on earth do pacers like Sharif, Robin, and Tarek make it ahead of Taskin Ahmed? Bogus move. Otherwise, it appears as though all the key players are there.

None of the under 19 pacers made it, whereas washed up has beens like Sharif, Tarek, Robin all made squads. We really hate pace bowling in Bangladesh.

According to Daily Star Alok Kapali is the captain of East Zone. Not Nafees Iqbal.

I have been calling for a tournament like this for ages! Too many teams in the NCL equates to too many sub-standard players who dilute the competitiveness of the matches. On the contrary, if you ensure only the best players are playing against each other, the matches actually mean something. I hope going forward this becomes our main FC tournament and the NCL serves more as a breeding ground for fledgling young cricketers. I'd like to see all teams play each other thrice a season at home, away and a neutral venue and then a final so each team gets to play at least nine FC games. And since only four teams are playing it means there'll be two games at any particular time so we can host them at our Test venues (SBNS, ZACS and Khulna) and not under-prepared dust-bowls.

If BCB can continue this tournament in parallel to NCL it will be good for our cricket. It almost like a two tire system. Those who will be able to perform good in NCL will find a team in BCL. So players will be in pressure to perform in NCL to get a team in BCL. And I am hoping that this BCL will be a competitive tourney with quality cricket.
It will be very nice to see how the domestic bullies perform. So I am waiting to see the performance of Faisal Dikens,Tushar Imran, Razin Saleh,Alok Kapali.
