Indian team incense fans
Angry fans burn a picture of Indian captain Sourav
Ganguly
Indian cricket fans have reacted angrily to their
side's poor form at the 2003 World Cup.
India, seen by many as strong contenders to win the
trophy, scored an unimpressive win over Holland in
their opening game before being thrashed by nine
wickets by Australia on Saturday.
Disgusted fans took to the streets of Calcutta after
the match and burned an effigy of the captain Sourav
Ganguly, before staging a mock funeral for the player.
Gavaskar hits out at India
As a result, police were forced to keep a close watch
on Ganguly's house, which was located nearby.
"We're doing what's needed in terms of security,"
police superintendent Deb Kumar Ganguly said.
There were similar demonstrations against the players
elsewhere in India.
In Bombay, fans burned pictures of star batsman Sachin
Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, while in Allahabad
black paint and oil were hurled at the house of
middle-order batsman Mohammad Kaif.
"The attack was not serious, but it was very
disappointing," a member of Kaif's family said.
Meanwhile, an instant poll taken by the Hindi-language
news channel Aaj Tak, following India's defeat to
Australia, found that more than 80% of respondents
would boycott products endorsed by the national side.
It has also been reported by The Times of India
newspaper, that some sponsors have withdrawn
television commercials featuring the India cricketers,
in response to the current public mood.
Tendulkar decision
Away from the domestic troubles, India face the
predicament of whether they should move star player
Tendulkar down the order from his position as opener.
India have arrived in Harare ahead of Wednesday's game
against Zimbabwe, on the back of two inept
performances by its top order batsmen.
Imran: Ganguly irresponsible
Despite Tendulkar's 52 and 36 against Holland and
Australia, it is believed that his partnership with
captain Ganguly is not working.
Reports have suggested that Virender Sehwag will open
the innings with Dinesh Mongia, while Rahul Dravid
would fill in at number three

Gangs
Is worse then Hannan at this moment. In that whole match, Tendulkar clearly stood out as the only genuinely gifted player. He scored at ease against every single player and saw the irresponsible batting LED BY Gangs (maybe he was following his Bangla speaking neighbors). The rest of the Indian batsmen failed to rotate the batting at all.
Anyways, if we had a Tendulkar, we could have atleast beat teams like Canada. The only other batsmen with any sense was Mongia. I can see why the Indian fans were angry. If our team was taunted to become world champs for a whole year and we bought the lie, we would be seeing the same reactions back home. *sigh*

Our situation is not all that different
Indians have been dreaming of winning the world cup and are now facing hard reality and a letdown by their team. We too have been dreaming of "two wins and an upset" and have now been let down. If we lose today's match in some historic way(!) don't be surpirsed to see a burning effigy or two...

I am a BDi living in India and have come to know that the Indian fans out here are very angry. Kaifs house has been blackened. Posters of cricketers are being burnt and some goods which are endorsed by cricketers are being ignored.
The Indians had performed very poorly against Holland and Australia and if they do not beat Zimbabwe baly, the condition is expected to go worse.
Security is being provided at every Cricketers home till the WC is over.
Should we also do a same thing ?

Pressure
Naah, that's just too match. After all, it's just a game. Yes, they do suck at it. If you ought to do something, make 'em work for their money. That'll wipe off that stupid green (still have Hannan's BIG smile against Canada on my mind - it's a horrible nightmare) from some of those faces.
By the way, with the reaction back home, no wonder the Indians have been playing so badly. That's way too much nonsense.
