Sylhet to get int’l cricket venue by 2012
Quote:
Bangladesh Cricket Board president AHM Mustafa Kamal on Saturday announced that the Sylhet divisional stadium will be renovated to meet the standards of an international venue by 2012. The announcement came after a view-exchange meeting, chaired by finance minister Abul Maal Muhith, at the Rose Garden Hotel in Sylhet where the board’s directora are currently holding a meeting with the aim to decentralise cricket and to provide the region with a much-needed impetus for the game.
‘The divisional stadium will be transformed into an international venue by 2012,’ Kamal told reporters.
The finance minister said it is a dream of the people of Sylhet to have an international cricket venue and urged the sports ministry to implement the project quickly.
‘We have taken initiative to set up an international cricket venue in Sylhet soon,’ Muhith told reporters.
‘The finance ministry has asked the sports ministry to take necessary steps and speed up the implementation of the project. The government will cooperate in every possible manner,’ said Muhith.
State minister for youth and sports Ahad Ali Sarkar assured the BCB of all kinds of cooperation from his ministry.
‘We have taken up a project worth Tk 65.91 crore to transform the divisional stadium into an international venue and the renovation works will begin in the current fiscal year,’ said Ahad.
The discussion meeting was also attended by the mayor of Sylhet Badruddin Ahmed and the members of the parliament Hafiz Ahmed Mazumder, Jebunnesa Haque and Mahmudus Samad Chowdhury.
Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury, spokesman for the BCB media, was happy with the
outcome of the discussions.
‘This was the reason why we came here. We are happy that we could achieve our goal,’ said Jalal.
It was learnt that the BCB would formally apply to the International Cricket Council for approval of the Sylhet stadium as an international venue after the completion of the renovation works by 2013.

Lotus, his big mouth and more promises! Hope this a typical "cry wolf" situation here by Lota.

Why on earth BCB didn't build one in sylhet for the WC and wasted so much money for khulna. khulna unfortunately will not get any game soon despite being the 2nd best ground in the country for lack of an airport and 5 star hotel.

What happened to Bogra? It was a beautiful ground with an absolutely fantastic outfield.

we haven't changed the official romanization of it, have we?
btw, i'm willing to give Lotus the BOTD here. seems like the plan is pretty concrete. but the problem is that we have venues at Khulna and Bogura/Bogra that are going unused. I can totally understand the need to play big teams at Mirpur and ZACS, but matches against smaller market teams like WI, NZ, SL, ZIM, and associates should always involve Khulna, Bogura.
Fatullah is a bit redundant with Mirpur being in Dhaka and being a world class venue.
Sylhet has the advantage of having a international airport. If only Emirates flew there, it would make total logistical sense. Sylhet probably has a decent hotel what with the business mindedness of her denizens.

They have Big Luxury Hotels but very few people stay in these hotels. They have big shopping malls like Dhaka but hardly people go there for shopping. All the rich people(Bilati r Americani) have luxurios houses but mostly the kajer bhua/cheles live in them. (Egula shob Kisu sylheti bhai-der kas theke shunechi.)

The stadiums in Khulna, Bogura, and Fatulla remain unutilized, but we want to build a new stadium. Guess what, more construction means more money to be made.

It will be nice if this happens. Sylhet hopefully wont even lag behind in case of government change, cause BNP also has people there..
We do need a consistent Intl. venue beside Dhaka and Chittagong.
