ক্রীড়া প্রতিবেদক : আগের দিন পাঠানো এসএমএসটাই না তো! না, ইনবঙ্ চেক করে নিশ্চিত হওয়া গেল এটা নতুনই। কিন্তু ভাষ্য একই। একটু পার্থক্য আছে। 'এ অবস্থায় নতুন কিছু বলার নেই', বাক্যটির আগে 'স্যার' যোগ করেছেন রিচার্ড পাইবাস। তবে বাংলাদেশ জাতীয় দলের কোচ হওয়ার পদে এ ইংলিশম্যানের নিযুক্তির সম্ভাবনায় পড়েছে নতুনত্বের চূড়ান্ত প্রলেপ। পরবর্তী ৪৮ ঘণ্টায় অভাবিত কিছু না ঘটলে জুনের প্রথম দিনই ঘোষিত হতে পারে নতুন কোচের নাম। সেই নামটি শুরু থেকে রেসে এগিয়ে থাকা রিচার্ড পাইবাস।
গতকালই আইপিএল দর্শন এবং পাকিস্তান ক্রিকেট বোর্ড প্রধানের সঙ্গে ক্রিকেটীয় কূটনীতি সেরে দেশে ফিরেছেন বিসিবি সভাপতি আ হ ম মোস্তফা কামাল। রিচার্ড পাইবাসই শেষমেশ কোচ হচ্ছেন, এমন তথ্যকে এখনই 'সঠিক' বলে রায় দিতে নারাজ তিনি, 'পাইবাস রাজি ছিলেন বলেই তো তাঁকে বিমানে করে ঢাকায় আনা হয়েছিল। কিন্তু ফিরে যাওয়ার পর তাঁর পক্ষ থেকে নতুন নতুন দাবি জানানো হয়েছে। তাই চুক্তিপত্রে স্বাক্ষর করার আগে জাতীয় দলের কোচ ইস্যুতে আর কোনো মন্তব্য করব না।' তবে বিসিবি সভাপতি তাঁর সহকর্মীদের নাকি আশ্বস্ত করেছেন যেন জাতীয় দলের কোচ নিয়োগ নিয়ে অযথা রক্তচাপ বাড়িয়ে না ফেলেন কেউ! 'প্রেসিডেন্ট (মোস্তফা কামাল) খুব কনফিডেন্ট। তাতে মনে হয় উনার সঙ্গে পাইবাসের যোগাযোগ আছে। হয়তো ইতিবাচক সাড়া তিনি পেয়েও গেছেন'- নাম প্রকাশে অনিচ্ছুক বিসিবির এক পরিচালক জানিয়েছেন গতকাল।
রিচার্ড পাইবাস কিংবা জাতীয় দলের সম্ভাব্য কোচ পদে আগ্রহীদের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগের প্রধান মাধ্যম বিসিবির ভারপ্রাপ্ত প্রধান নির্বাহী নিজামউদ্দিন চৌধুরী। যোগাযোগের সবশেষ 'আপডেট' তিনি অবহিত করেন বোর্ড সভাপতিকে। অন্য একটি সূত্রে জানা গেছে, বিসিবি প্রধানও নাকি টেলিফোনে উৎসাহিত করেছেন পাইবাসকে। ১১ মে ঢাকার বিমানবন্দর থেকে পাইবাস সরাসরি উঠেছিলেন মোস্তফা কামালের বাড়িতেই। সেদিন মিরপুরে পাইবাসের প্রতি আগ্রহের যে আতিশয্য দেখিয়েছিলেন, তাতে কেপটাউনে বিসিবি প্রধানের ফোন করা অস্বাভাবিক নয়।
অবশ্য শীর্ষ ক্রিকেট কর্তার আগ্রহই নয়, বিসিবি সূত্রে নিশ্চিত হওয়া গেছে যে পুনর্নির্ধারিত বেতন-ভাতায় অনেকটাই সন্তুষ্ট রিচার্ড পাইবাস। মাসে আয়কর ছাড়া ১৫ হাজার ডলার বেতন পাবেন জেনেই ঢাকায় এসেছিলেন দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকায় বসবাসকারী এ ইংলিশ। কিন্তু ঢাকার অতি-আগ্রহ দেখেই কি না, দেশে ফিরে মাসে আয়কর বাদে ২০ হাজার ডলার বেতনের সঙ্গে বাড়তি আরো কিছু দাবি জুড়ে দেন পাইবাস। বিস্ময়ে বিমূঢ় বিসিবির তাঁর প্রতি আগ্রহ ৮০ ভাগ হ্রাস পেয়েছিল তখনই। তবু পেশাদার কোচ পাইবাস। তাই ১৭ হাজার ডলার 'টেক অ্যাওয়ে'র সঙ্গে অন্যান্য সুবিধাদি কিছুটা বাড়িয়ে দ্বিতীয় প্রস্তাব গত সপ্তাহে দিয়েছিল বিসিবি। কোচ নিয়োগ প্রক্রিয়া সংশ্লিষ্ট সূত্রে খবর, 'আগের অবস্থান থেকে কিছুটা সরে এসেছেন পাইবাস। ইতিবাচক পরিণতির দিকেই এগুচ্ছে বিষয়টি।' চূড়ান্ত পরিণতির জন্য আগামীকাল ৩১ মে পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষার পরামর্শ বিসিবি সভাপতির। এর মাঝে পরিস্থিতি সুনামির কবলে না পড়লে জুনের শুরুতেই রিচার্ড পাইবাসের নাম সগর্বে ঘোষণার প্রস্তুতিও নাকি নিয়ে ফেলেছেন মোস্তফা কামাল! তবে তিন বছর নয়, প্রথম মেয়াদটা দুই বছরের চাচ্ছেন পাইবাস। এ ব্যাপারে আপত্তিও নেই বিসিবির।
কিন্তু অভাবিত ব্যাপারটিই যদি ঘটে? যদি শেষমেশ না-ই করে দেন পাইবাস? 'তাহলে ভালো কোচ পেতে খুব সমস্যা হবে', কপালে দুশ্চিন্তার ভাঁজ এক বিসিবি পরিচালকের। কেপলার ওয়েসেলস অনেক দিন ধরেই কোচিংয়ের সঙ্গে যুক্ত নন। ধারাভাষ্য নিয়ে ব্যস্ত। মিক নিওয়েলের পক্ষে এখনই কাউন্টি ছেড়ে আসা কঠিন। মার্ক গ্রেটব্যাচ কতটা ভালো কোচ হবেন, তা নিয়ে সংশয়াচ্ছন্ন নীতি-নির্ধারকরা। নিজেদের করা সংক্ষিপ্ত তালিকার বাকি নামগুলোর প্রতি এতটাই নিরাসক্ত বিসিবি। আবার অন্য সমস্যাও আছে। 'বাংলাদেশের কোচ পদে এগিয়ে থাকা পাইবাস ফসকে গেলে বেশি দর হাঁকবে অন্যরাও'- যেন আরেকটা নতুন ভাঁজ পড়ল ওই পরিচালকের কপালে!
তাই আবারও রিচার্ড পাইবাস দৌড়ে সর্বাগ্রে। চুক্তির আনুষ্ঠানিকতা সম্পন্ন হয়নি বলেই হয়তো এখনই চূড়ান্ত সিদ্ধান্ত জানাচ্ছেন না তিনি এবং বিসিবি। অবশ্য জিম্বাবুয়ে সফরের জন্য কোচ সমস্যার সমাধান একরকম করাই আছে। রাজি হলে দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা থেকে সোজা হারারেতে গিয়ে মুশফিকুর রহিমদের দায়িত্ব নেবেন রিচার্ড পাইবাস। এর অন্যথা হলে ভারপ্রাপ্ত প্রধান কোচ শেন জার্গেনসেন তো আছেনই

Richard Pybus lives in SA. The upcoming tour is against Zimbabwe and SA meaning he doesn't have to live in Bangladesh for a while yet. Also, he doesn't have to spend time in Dhaka preparing the team and can let Grant and Shane do that.

Given he has left Western Province he might not want to be in charge of a Bangladesh side that may not perform in his own back yard - or he might fancy the fact he stays in Africa for the start of his tenure with the team.

Ian, what's your gut feeling? (It's not finalized so anything can pop up at the last second, given the BCB President's over-optimism). Pybus a done deal starting June 1st or anytime in June?

If you think he thinks like that then it would be very unfortunate for a renowned professional coach like him. We need a coach who loves to take challenges and make it happen, not the opposite one.

I'm not saying he does think that way. I am saying that there would be an awkwardness if the team u are running gets smoked by a SA 2nd string team in your own region, when you are from that region.

I honestly dont have a feeling about this. There appears to be a great deal of behind the scenes assurances going on, or at least financial 'compensation' so that if things didn't go well it would cost a lost to change coach.

My fear slightly is the impact it has on the support staff....it can be unsettling. The players are used to it, I'm sure.

The sooner the better. Quite a lot of pressure on Shane as an interim head coach, too. He hasn't done this before and the squad are also without a top flight batting coach. I am not sure it's an ideal situation.

Pybus might be simultaneously looking at the NZ role too of course, we don't know. That maybe why he's insisting on getting his package up so it's clearly more favourable to go to Dhaka.

lol I don't think Pybus will last either. Look at his staying power at all the jobs he has been, he doesn't stick around often. Even if he does i can't see him furthering this 2 year contract.

Ian, I think if Pybus doesn't know the status of the team that he is going to coach then it was better for him to not to take the job. As he has taken it he should face the challenge. Whether he likes it or not , It's his duty now to do something to change the result ...
