Default Doping/Cheating in Australian Sport

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-0...-sport/4505884

Quote:
An Australian Crime Commission investigation has found widespread drug use in Australian professional sport, with some athletes being given substances not yet approved for human use.
The year-long investigation says organised criminal networks have been involved in distributing the drugs to athletes and support staff, including doctors and coaches.
In at least one case an entire team is believed to have been doped.
A former head of the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority says today is the "blackest day in Australian sport" while Justice Minister Jason Clare says "the findings are shocking and they'll disgust Australian sports fans".
The report's key points:
  • The use of prohibited substances, including peptides, hormones, and illicit drugs, is widespread amongst professional athletes.
  • The Australian Crime Commission says no code is immune from the scandal.
  • Players are being administered with drugs not yet approved for human use.
  • The doping is being run by sports scientists, coaches, support staff, doctors and pharmacists.
  • Organised crime is involved in distributing the drugs and, in one possible case, match-fixing.
  • The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) will get new powers to conduct a "full and unhindered investigation".
  • Authorities are refusing to name the athletes and teams involved But Victoria Police say a confidential version of the report contains names.
  • The NRL is investigating Manly and Penrith's records; the AFL announces changes to its integrity program.
This has been a huge story. Accusations that drugs is widespread through different codes of sport in Australia (Rugby, League, Soccer, Cricket have been named). This allegations have come up by the Australian Crime Commission from an ongoing year investigation. No names have been put up yet so all codes of sport are pretty much in the same cloud.

There has been murmurs that their might have been match fixing in cricket games. As an Aussie im dissapointed that this has come up but i'm not as surprised that this has been happening. Previous rugby players have been caught doing these type of things. But i wouldn't have thought that these type of things were widespread.

I heard that a while ago "Customs and Border Protection intercepted a package from Canada which contained ten, five milligram vials of white powder labelled GHRP-6. Subsequent inquiries by ASADA identified the addressee as an Aussie rugby union player"

This is serious.

Well there were rumours that the Labour government set this fiasco up to take the media attention away from their ministerial incident about the corruption scandal. But now it has emerged that the ACC has told the CEO of NRL the 6 clubs that have been involved with doping. The names have not yet been revealed to the public. I guess now we have to play the waiting game

Quote:
According to sources close to the investigation, players were tricked into taking so called "supplements", only to be later told that they had in fact taken banned substances.
The players were then later called upon and threatened with being "outed" as drug cheats unless they agreed to fix matches or pay money. According to sources, several players had fallen victim to the bribery racket and were mostly confined to the NRL and not other codes.
Sh** just got serious

This story isnt bad, its worse, and it cuts across at least two codes of football.

At Cronulla, the club's board has just sacked their coach, doctor and physiotherapist - two basic substances are involved, one of which failed clinical trials after a death by heart attack during the study, and the other one is marked 'For Equine Use Only'.

At Essendon, who had the same "sports scientist" working for them, investigations are continuing. It has been noted that club coach - and ex-star and third generation player - James Hird has links to the same "sport scientist".

This article concentrates on Cronulla, and is a pretty good summary. Roy Masters is a legend of rugby league journalism, and loves that code deeply.

there are i think 3 other NRL clubs involved. ASADA dont seem to be handling this very well. All of Australian Sport was said to be involved in drug cheating, then it got pointed towards the NRL, now only the Sharks have been named. Very messy

BengaliPagol,

Asada are handling it just fine. They are breaking one case, then using the information received to work on the next one.

Everything that has happened so far was foreshadowed in the public report ... it just isnt all happening in 48 hours.

Well to me they aren't. They said the Sharks were involved with horse drugs and that 14 players had supposedly taken performance enhancing drugs. ASADA claim to know how many players were involved but then why wouldn't they know the names of the players who did take drugs? What are they waiting for? Are they waiting for players to come forward?

Its a very cloudy situation. The way they accused of 'widespread use of drugs' in Australian Sport has now been narrowed down to 2 NRL clubs (Sharks and Manly). You can't go around making accusations like that.

Yes, they know - but they are waiting for those players to come forwards, with the plan being that those players confess and provide evidence against others that ASADA do not currently have enough evidence against.

The story continues to develop, by the way

The Weapon is still very much in the frame, by the way - specifically, what was the "unauthorised expenditure" at Essendon.
