Yeah..Go Pens !

Well, he consistently said that he would take less money for the team to sign other players and not handicap the team. A top player like him, may earn as much as 20% of the annual salaries of the particular team, under the new collective bargaining agreement, which sets the team salary cap close to 50 mil ( I think ) per year, per team. Great leadership.

$ 9 mil a year is not chump change...

shows he aint greedy, he signed atleast 1/2 mil a year less with that deal. with his stats and potential he could be worth way more ..if he waited another year or two, maple leafs, rangers wings would have offered way way way more

awww if only the pens were to stay in steeltown .. mario has been trying to sell the team for ages now .. isle of capri didnt win the slots, RIM chairman tried to buy it, NHL and Mario blocked it, now another Kansas city, Las Vegas and another Canadian city raising investors to buy the team and relocate.

Pens cant afford a contender team, doesnt matter what the salary cap is.

2ndly its prestigious ..

You haven't followed the recent developements, have you? Well, its not that recent as the fate of the team has been decided a few months ago. The city, state, county came together to fund the new arena which will be build next to Igloo. Construction is on the way. It will be ready by 2009 season. Pens are staying , signed a lease for 30 years and not for sale!

Seasn tkts are sold out for the foreseeable future, a la the Steelers..

Salary cap enforcement means we have as good a chance to compete and win just as Rangers, Red wings etc..Look at the teams that won recent Stanley Cups. All from small market areas and smaller teams in stature. Ducks this year, Hurricanes the year before and Tampa before that...

its true i havent followed the arena news since the playoffs ended, but mario has been trying to sell the team, which he was forced to take on and which is deeply in the red. 2ndly leases can still be broken.

2ndly salary cap this year is 50 mil, that means bigger teams can way outspend smaller teams now, such wasnt the case for the 1st two years, since there was parity in small measure, most small teams like pens cant afford to pay more than 40-43 a years. next year salary cap will be even higher in the zone of 55 mil (now its closing in on the salaries paid by big teams before the lockout, aka 60+ mil range ), since canadian markets are doing extremely well, along with traditional american NHL zones.

hamilton is also known as steeltown 2ndly if a franchise fails /unprofitable in any city regardless of the lease agreement, it will move. pittsburgs cant afford NHL team. Pens so far has been complaining about the igloo, while they werent even able to fill that one. 2ndly mario doesnt wish to be a owner anymore

time will tell, as far as my sources have been telling me, aka media who follows such sport for living, (just had lunch with one today) mario is very anxious to sell and get out of it.
