Default Beckham transferred to FC Bayern Munich from Real Madrid.

Sensation hung in the Munich air shortly before midday on Friday as a sleek black limousine drew up at Bayern's Säbener Strasse headquarters, bringing world superstar David Beckham for a brief meeting at which, according to reports, the player would sign for the Bavarian club in time for the new season.

The England midfielder was reportedly in town to finalise the details of what would rate as the German top flight's most remarkable transfer coup. Sources say the 29 year-old has been offered a three-year deal and will become the club's most expensive signing ever.

'Becks' still has two years to run on his contract with Spanish giants Real Madrid. The clubs declined to comment on the size of the fee, but the sum is thought unlikely to be any less than the €35 million Real paid Manchester United for the iconic free-kick specialist in 2003.

Bayern's readiness to dig deeper than ever before into the club's financial reserves stems from the management's determination to mark a new era at the state-of-the-art Allianz Arena with the arrival of a true superstar of the game. The new stadium in the city is said to have been a decisive factor in persuading the England captain to up sticks from Spain.

Another well-publicised reason is the Beckham family's recent discomfort in their Madrid surroundings. On the field, Real are staring at a second consecutive campaign without silverware, while privately Beckham is seething at what he regards as unwarranted press intrusion into his children's private life.

Initial talks are reported to have been held when Bayern met Real in the Champions League last term. The player now appears to have used an enforced break due to a thigh injury to pay a flying visit to his potential new home and tie up the last remaining details of the deal.

The man with the cultured right foot is now set to play out the last third of his career – he will be 30 on 2 May – at another of the biggest clubs in world football. Sources at Bayern indicated the new arrival would be handed the squad number 12. The replica shirt can be ordered immediately, including at the FCB Online shop.
