Default Cricket: It's No Steyn on You Bangladesh, it's Just Science

That look. The eye-bulging, vein-popping laced with a blood-curdling scream look of Dale Steyn when he is pumped up in a Test match having taken a wicket is one which delights many, even though it should scare the pants off you. Because when Steyn is that pumped up, he is a joy to watch.

But reality is dawning that it’s the look we might not get to see for much longer and the man himself admitted recently that he has to start thinking a bit more carefully about what he does and when he does it. In an interview with Wisden India, which upset the entire population of Bangladesh, Steyn said that he’d rather not play in a one-day series against Bangladesh because he feels he only has about “10,000 or 20,000 deliveries” left in the tank. His choice of words wasn’t quite so diplomatic and, in hindsight, saying “rather than wasting the few balls I have left in my career in a Bangladesh match” probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but that doesn’t make it any less true.

South Africa’s pace ace turns 32 next month and while that might be young for ordinary people, Steyn is anything but ordinary. Sportsmen, are not ordinary, and their reality is juxtaposed against us mere mortals who carry on working until we’re well into our middle age. For sports people, their careers rarely extend beyond their mid-30s. Superhuman as Steyn might be in terms of his numbers and ability, he is not immune to this reality. Up until around 2013, headlines such as ‘Injured Steyn to miss match X’ were unlikely to pop up and, if they did, it was usually because of something uncontrolled, like a broken finger. Hamstring niggles and random strains never really featured in his vocabulary, but the reality of a sportsman’s life is as they get older they have to accept their bodies just can’t do what they used to.

............... ....... .......

For that reason, Steyn is quite right when he says that “wasting” deliveries he has left isn’t really on his priority list because, let’s face it, while Bangladesh might be trying very hard, when it comes to choosing between bowling to England on a New Year’s Day at Newlands in front of his home fans and trundling along against Bangladesh on a dust bowl in Dhaka, there really is no contest about where South Africa’s best ever bowler should rather spend his time. It’s nothing personal, it’s just science. DM

I think bd fans are upset because we kept witnessing big names withdrawal years after year. Now since we are playing good, we expect all great players to tour us. However, Steyn has a point. Fast bowlers require much more rest than other cricketers. So its fair that he is thinking about himself. If Mash withdrew himself from a tour, I dont think South Afticans would make a big deal. Once we become true world beaters then things will change perhaps?

We have to give the neutral author benefit of the doubt instead of getting defensive about nothing.

Yeah, after Steyns comments, I lost a little bit of support for South Africa. We get what he is trying to say, maybe he could have said it in a more polite way without putting Bangladesh down. Nonetheless, Bangladesh should respond to this insult in the cricket field.

So, he prefers to play in IPL, not for his own country ! Shows his intention ! All this 'wasting energy' bla bla excuses are just plain bull crap ! Moreover, the way he bowls now-a-days, bangladeshis would be sad to miss out him, not angry at him

Three innocent stumps....(Tamimi, Shahadat etc) 2008 SA series.

Hope If Stein comes BD shows some 'technic' and resiliency rather than talking faul like "Hen Karenga Ten Karenga...Bagher Bhoye ashche na..Ufff !"

No he is right. A soon to be museum piece is better off putting together respectable numbers against an English team, even tho i would argue BD is an overall better squad.

Because in 20 years, England cricket will still be considered ... Something. So his wickets will mean ...something i guess.. Even if the batsman facing the ball was the last man in.

In Steyn logic, given moeen ali vs tamim iqbal,

He would pick moeen ali every time.

Because of the three lions over his helmet.

Never mind that Tamim is two deviation class apart of an opener than Ali.

If he has 10,000 deliveries left in him, wouldn't it be more prudent to bowl a definite 10 overs 60 deliveries vs >20 overs in tests....

Since the topic of discussion is "why would i waste deliveries in bangladesh?"

Read the main article where he stated -

Quote:
Dale Steyn has suggested he may not be available for the full duration of South Africa's next international assignment, against Bangladesh in July, as he tries to manage his workload with one eye on appearing at another World Cup.

Quote:
"At this stage of my career, I'd rather be saving myself to go and participate in the major tournaments, rather than wasting the few balls I have left in my career in a Bangladesh match," Steyn said in an interview with Wisden India.

If he aims for another limited overs WC in 2019 then why skipping ODI's and playing Test matches ? Does he have Test match fitness ? That just don't make sense to me. It's all about Bangladesh mate. If this series were against India or even SL, he wouldn't talk like that in public.

Later he stated in Twitter in response to our BD gentlemen's offensive attitude that he will be playing the only test match against us.

@naimul

Just plain disrespect, nothing else.

Picking up cupcake wickets against IPL local boys (remember only 4 intl players). N u "wasting" deliveries.

We dont have a snap mouth to talk right back.

Well.. We do but he is more of the idiot variety.

His mission is not to waste more energy and deliveries so that he can play in the next WC.

Decision: Ok, lets just skip ODI matches and play in Test matches ! Playing 3 ODI matches will take more energy than playing in 2 test matches.

Damn, how I missed this logic.

Not so simplistic I guess he could skip both Test & ODIs or one of them.

He values test matches against any opponent, so he prefers to play the test series & save the energy and deliveries by abstaining from ODIs....

No disrespect, I guess he's trying to be logical & practical. If you have to decide to skip a series amongst 10 teams, whom would you skip first? The 10th ranked? Then 9th ranked? And then go further up if you think your team can win against them without you, where you find your team needs you, have to stop there ... You can't skip any further.

So he rightly chose to skip BD ODI series, his team he thinks can win without him, with ease. Now it's our responsibility to force him to play. How can we do that? White wash SA and he won't skip the next series.

I still dont think we win but playing argentina without messi or cavaliers without lebron is anti climactic.

Even if u win, its with an asterisk.
