I love the thread rating system. As long as we are truthful this helps as a feedback.
Don't really care about the rep.

Not too sure how rep power is calculated (maybe from the number of different members or from certain member with higher posts...janina.. andaj) but reputation is awesome. Basically the more you have, the more people liked your posts as far as I understand.
I don't think it's an automatic thing, it increases everytime somebody adds to your reputation. I tried it So hatebreed, James, Carte Blanche, Nasif, Chinaman, Mahmud.. all should thank me

Rep power is calculated automatically by forum software. The algorithm is based on your number of days since you became member, number post, activity on forum (lot of other details).
Rep count is total number of reputation points you have received from other members. You start off with 10 by default. In every post there is an icon which looks like:
. If you click on this icon you can add/subtract to the reputation point of the user who posted that message. If you think the post was worthy then you can give + if not you can give -. Your Rep power decides how many rep points you can add/subtract to/from others.
If a user have Rep power of 5, then s/he can give + or - 5 points to the any user for a post. Your Rep power will increase as you stay on the forum and participate.
I hope it clears up the confusion.

here me and ATMR were the only two posters with rep of 10,so i just tested the system by giving ATMR and nasif 2 each, that makes nasif's rep 1000017 lol

What's the point anyway?
BTW, it would be good to have the username/avatar/info in the left side again. I think it uses less space and most of the sites use this kind of layout.

Similarly post count is useless also.
The point is like everything else it is a measure of ones performace and identity on the forum. Online communication is faceless and identityless. These markers serve the purpose of giving readers an idea about the author of the post. Its all about identity.

This rating system is a form of discrimination and it should be avoided in a forum like BC to avoid unhealthy debate on cricket and other issues. This rating will have such an influence on forum members that they will not be able to have their instinctive say; rather it will become a popularity contest. Personally, I am already concerned with “oiling and buttering” issues in this forum and this rating system will only make it worse. That means people who have many rep power points will have to be prepared for more “oiling and buttering” to take and the victims who are looking to improve their stats will have to learn new skills how to apply “oiling and buttering”. It is clear that the point system is already biased and if you need any particular example, I will name it.
Finally, a member should only be judged on the merit of the posts- not based on any other external factors.
Let the debate win, not the popularity.
(I hope my post will not generate hatred)

I will probably never use the rep. system seriously. And I will definately abuse this system when I'm in mood. Mark my words!

Are not we than opting against people talking freely? I thought this forum is free and anybody can present his/her honest opinions. But doing so (rep and rep power), we are actually taking away the freedom of the members. Even many will be stopping themselves posting funny comments and by this we will loose the beauty of the forum. I know many of us sometime come with many stupid comments and that's what sometime enjoyable and sometime irritating which makes the forum more attractive. Moreover, moderators are always there to monitor any offense.
Another bad side of this rep and rep power is creating personal clash between members. If someone degrade my number, I will look for the opportunity to take away his. And of curse, in this contest, the members with high rep power will dominate.
And as spitfire just said (I know he just made fun), anybody can abuse this when he/she is on a mood.

Hey spitfire, you have got quite handful rep power points; why don’t you give me some? I gave you confidence-boosting advice about women last year, remember? Its pay back time now.

Sorry's wish is granted.
BTW, why can't I negate 7 rep points, since I have rep power 7 and can give 7 rep points? I can only negate 3.

With respect to everyone concerned, I don't think rep/rep power system is a great idea in a public forum like BC. Moderators are there to moderate any unnecessary/unacceptable posts. Felow members can quote any post to hail it or to counter the logic.
If you have no other option but to keep the rep/rep power system, I would suggest 'restrict rep power authority only to the moderators & administrators.'

Personally I'm not big fan of this system as of now. Once we all get used to it, may be we'll learn to sport it in a more helpful and positive way.

I fully agree with what Sorry and sar2005 said. Like chinaman, I'm also not a fan of this system. It's too gimmicky and from my personal experience, I have seen it get abused a lot.
That said, I really like the thread rating system.
