Default 2014 World Cup Prediction Game

Just about 30 more days until the World Cup starts. Back in 2010 we played a prediction game here. So let's get one started for this year. This prediction game is through ESPN.com.

The game is really simple. You have to predict the group champion and runner up for each group. Based on your selection matches for the 2nd round will get determined, and from there you keep predicting who will win each game. This game is very similar to the Cricket World Cup prediction game we played here back in 2011. Please read the how to play section Here

Scoring

Group Stage: 1 point per correct pick
Group Stage Bonus: 1 point per pick if team is in correct slot
Round of 16: 2 points per correct pick
Round of 16 Bonus: 2 points per pick if team is in correct slot
Quarterfinals: 4 points per correct pick
Quarterfinals Bonus: 4 points per pick if team is in correct slot
Semifinals: 16 points per pick
Final: 32 points per pick

Grand Prize
$2,000 Best Buy Gift Card (or cash equivalent, at ESPN's discretion) (ARV: $2,000.00)

Runner-Up
$1,000 Best Buy Gift Card (or cash equivalent, at ESPN's discretion) (ARV: $1,000.00)

The ESPN Promotion is open only to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States and Washington, D.C., Mexico, United Kingdom, and Canada (excluding Quebec).

The game is open to everyone, not just USA/Canada/UK members. Unfortunately if someone from BD or another country win the whole thing, they won't qualify for the grand prize/runner up prize. But please don't let that discourage you from playing. Back in 2010 I think we had close to 50 member, I hope we can get close to that. You don't have to worry about making picks everyday. Just make your prediction once and enjoy.

I made a BanglaCricket.com group. You have to make a ESPN account in order to play. Please make a ESPN account HERE

Here is the link to Banglacricket.com Group.
Password: shakib

Just to clarify the grand prize is for the ESPN.com competition, not BanglaCricket group

Go Brazil!!

Is it you just predict the whole tournament upfront or you can change after group stage or is it before the game starts?

I have little knowledge on teams this year. The only think I know is Brazil winning the cup beating Argentina in the finals 6-0.

T_E bhai you have to predict the whole tournament ahead of time. Its pretty much like the NCAA basketball bracket challange.

I don't know where you heard that from. Did you hear Klinsman talk? Everyone's knows this group belongs to Portugal and Germany. It will be a miracle if U.S. can get past this group. I think everyone who follows this team and football in general in U.S. knows that very well.

Haven't picked a loser yet but it's still very early in the tournament. Some of the draws I predicted ended up having a winner, but no winner I picked has lost yet.

Picked Bosnia over Argentina and as feared, suffered my first outright loss. That said, I can never root for a country with Argentina's tradition of racism, cheating, drug use, metrosexual douchery, and fathering bastards. No, being an Argentina fan won't keep you from being treated like dirt there because no matter how dedicated a coconut you are, you're still brown on the outside. It's a matter of self respect.

Last time I checked most Argentinians were brown as well, various shades of brown, but not fair by any means (very few being as pale as Messi or Zanetti)

You checked completely wrong. I've been there, twice. Do a little research. Go to an Argentine Church or community event and see for yourself, remembering that they can't get away with many things outside their country. Talk to their non-Uruguaso neighbors about their weird racial attitudes because most are either of Spanish, Italian, German, Slavic, French or even British origin with little or no non-European blood. The indigenous population was wiped out so that their robbed property could be doled out to White folks from Northern Europe. At least watch an Argentine film or TV show to overcome your ill-informed idea about how "pale" most of them are. Or have a close look at the team photo in the Argentina Fan thread.

Also, Argentina was a member of Hitler's Axis and a haven for Nazi war criminals who loved the place as their new home because of its "racial purity". Reality bites!

Fairly speaking, you can stop the tournament and start a shorter version from what I have seen so far.

Italy, Germany, Brazil, Switzerland, Holland and France can play a shorter tourney and then Italy can win the cup and the plate remains happy.

My predictions for round 2:
1. Brazil*-2 Chile-1
2. Colombia*-2 Uruguay-1
3. Netherlands*-3 Mexico-1
4. Costa Rica*-2 Greece-0
5. France*-2 Nigeria-0
6. Germany*-2 Algeria-1
7. Argentina*-1(PK) Switzerland-1
8. Belgium*-1 USA-0
* = predicted winner

So far it's looking like a Brazil - Netherlands and France - Germany semifinals. But if group matches are any indication, there is every possibility of upsets. I'm rooting for Mexico, USA and Argentina to make the unexpected happen!

A lot of people are still underestimating Chile. I think it will be a lot closer than we think. Im saying 1-1 in regular time. Brazil gets one in extra time.
