I tried mainland China and I must say was very salty. The ambience on the otherhand is world class.
I might try karai gosht which was a really good place to eat.

Went to Manin Chinese restaurant just north of Eastern plaza yesterday cause it was only place open as BD is on 10 day holiday for Eid & Puja. Food was decent but it was too dark and service wasn't what I'm used to. since I'm only person there expected them to be more attentive. But worst part was looking out the window and seeing the shanty town across the street and the homeless kids, lost my appetite. Today I took my remaining cousins to dinner at Yung Tun in Farmgate, avoid this place as it was dirty and food was below par.

Thanks for the tip. However 2 years ago I went to Jing Ling near Rifles square. I was quite pleasently surprised that their soup and wontons were still as delicious as they were in 1995.

B&H modified chotpoti cart between the Westin and Dhanshir'hi. Best hot dogs in town and decent burgers fresh out of the griddle. Good toppings like mushrooms, pickled jalapenos and beef bacon. Available from 1730 to 0230 hours. Take-out only.

Finally have time to spend on the computer so few updates - The breakfast buffet at Sonargoan is pretty good (kind of expensive though), tried goat brain curry which was good. Then went to Borisal and had local foods for a week, think I had enough ilish mach to last me a few years, the ones in Kuakata were big and freshly caught. Along with the local sweets from Gournadi. Then I stayed on Banani 11 and tried few restaurants there: Urban Spice is a Indonesian place the decor and food was good. Then tried Nando's which was disappointing, tried their pita chicken and the bread was so thin half the chicken ended up on my lap; taste was not bad but I don't get all the hoopla. Then tried Doo Mi Ok, a korean place that was pretty authentic; would recommend if you like Korean.

Told you Sonargaon breakfast would be good!
You should have taken the package that includes buffet breakfast - it's kinder to the wallet that way

Hotel and airline food tend to be on the bland side for a reason, they don't want folks to get sick and damage their reputation. It is reputation that enables them to charge obscenely high prices gladly paid by showy local patrons looking for prestige in a society that has had its moral priorities subverted.
As "western" breakfasts go, try almost any of the smaller inns in the GBB area. Just as good and less that half the price.

Heh.
I'm not going to Dhaka to get Western or other ethnic food. I can get Michelen star rated or quality right where I am or places I travel too.
What I look forward to in Dhaka is the subtle deshi flavors you can get nowhere else.
A big part of my Dhaka routine is paya and rumali ruti breakfast at Star or Dhansiri. Or kihichuri with beef from that place in Lalmatia (darn it, forgot the name). Or biriani's galore - particularly kachhi as that is a Bengal classic. And of course, fish, fish, and more fish. However, with all the formalin scares and over fishing this has become more difficult.

One of my most favorite places. Actually when I was in high school we used to go there regularly. At the beginning it was this small tin shed area with a couple of tables to sit on. Haven't been there in years.

Lets call it by its actual name: "Shaad Tehari Ghor", the name itself is appetizing.
Thanks to traffic, could not manage to go there during my last 2 trips to Dhaka

Back up the bullock cart !
I don't know which airlines you have been on, but airline food is simply superb. The quantity is obviously not much but the quality is great! Have a look at airlinemeals.net when you have time.
And, not everyone is a 'showy local patron looking for prestige' e.g. me And, Sonargaon's breakfast is definitely not western - they have taler pitha as an item in their buffet breakfast. I stay there as it is a reflection of my home abroad in BD and you can get breakfast for a little bit extra added to your room charges.

Shaad Tehari Ghar....is that the one beside Hot Hut and Memory Bakery????
if its the same one, I used to love their khichuri with beef curry and small red potatoes..
I agree Sonargaon's breakfast is quite good, but personally I think for breakfast its just a bit overpriced. The staff are very attentive.
Like Zunaid and mufi_02 I would rather have breakfast in the moderate priced but exceptionaly tasty Dhaka restaraunts. I dont know why but for breakfast I enjoy the thin parathas with paanch mishali, chollar daal and mamlete.
Mainly because during my uni years this is what I used to have quite often.
On the note of airline food (if travelling economy), this depends on a few things:
- which airlines you travelling
- which airport it departed from
- which destination its going to
I have found Emirates/Etihad providing really good meals. however Qatar really serves poor food on the Doha to Dhaka part of the journey.

Exactly. The name itself made me hungry. Shaad Tehari was 5 mins walk from my school. We used to bunk classes and combine our tiffin money for some teharis. Kamal confectionary opposite of dhanmondi gov't boys had good patties and rolls as well. As Boss said, paya is another great breakfast item.

Aren't we a little self righteous, I was there for 16 days and ate at Sonargoan once, and it was good and had a wide variety of food. It compares favorably to any other place I had breakfast at around the world. I had roti or paratha and bhaji from a variety of street hotels for the rest of the trip and it sucked, and at the end I quit eating breakfast. The Parathas are thin and doesn't have enough butter, at first I was like I orderd paratha not roit, and the bhaji or bhaji/dal are oily and don't hold a candle to the bhaji/luci I loved in India. You can keep your local hotels.

Prime, my post was not meant to be taken seriously. So don't feel offended. I just shared my experiences of breakfast in Dhaka. We all have our preferences and taste.
I have never been to India so can't compare their bhaji/luci with ours. But I guess as they are a more roti-eating nation, their quality will be better than ours. Like the same way they can't cook rice and fish like us.
