Finally Tigercricket has some update:

Quote:
Last stop at Windy City
Rabeed Imam
09-January-2008

WELLINGTON: The New Zealand capital is the last destination for the Bangladesh team before they wind up their 5-week tour and this is also the place where they will have the final chance of salvaging something concrete. Down 0-1 in the two-match series the Tigers arrived here today (Wednesday) afternoon for the final Test at Basin Reserve starting Saturday.

Usually Wellington’s name is associated with its reputation as New Zealand’s ‘Windy City’ and for about four months a year the westerly ‘roaring forties’ winds whip through the Cook Straight between the bottom of the North Island and the top of the South Island and produces blistery weathers that can turn into gale force winds. The Bangladesh team however found Wellington to be a sunny and generous 16 degrees and the wind never threatened to go beyond pleasant.

Wellington is also the most southern capital in the world holding an urban population of 379,000 and as the team bus zigzagged across the edges of the Wellington Harbour into the sprawling city centre towards the Tigers’ hotel the scenes were more akin to a Riviera with posh apartments and villas jutting out of the mountains and overlooking the blue waters of the Pacific. There’s one thing to remember here, the Harbour lies along an active geological fault which is prominent in its straight western coast. The land to the west of this abruptly rises and that’s why many of Wellington's suburbs sit high above the centre of the city which is dominated by a mixture of modern high-rises and century old structures. This probably explains why Wellington is also the country’s capital of contemporary and historic art.

The Bangladesh team had a stopover in Christchurch on their way to Wellington from Dunedin and a very special guest was present at the airport just to meet them. Former New Zealand captain Graham Dowling came with his wife to say hello and spent some time with the players and officials and it signified the genuine affection the 70-year old carries for Bangladesh cricket. When Mohammad Ashraful was introduced to him Dowling said “I’ve heard about you. You smack the ball all around the park.” His wife meanwhile was surprised by the appearance of the Bangladesh skipper and exclaimed “you are far too young!”

In 2000 under the Chairmanship of Sir Clyde Walcott the ICC Cricket Committee appointed a sub-committee of Australia’s Bob Simpson, Zimbabwe’s Andy PyCroft of Zimbabwe and Nasim-Ul Ghani of Pakistan to visit Bangladesh and inspect the country’s cricketing infrastructure and then report if Bangladesh were ready for Test and international cricket. Simpson had to decline as he had other commitments at the time and Dowling took his place. It was only after Dowling and the others reported favourably that the ICC Executive Board decided to give Bangladesh Test status.

The Tigers spent the afternoon doing some recovery and fitness activities at the nearby beach before attending a homely reception arranged by the small but sprightly Bangladeshi community here. The children, most of whom are born here, may find Bangla alien compared to English but the passion for the country remains intact. Some brought scrapbooks with the players' photos and took autographs, others ran around with miniature bats and had them signed by their heroes. The ladies had spent hours preparing Bangladeshi delicacies for the team and every effort was made to make them literally feel at home.

Preparation for the second Test continues tomorrow with fitness sessions in the morning and then extended nets and fielding in two groups at the Basin well into the afternoon.
