Initial report said one person succumbed to his wounds. Identity of the victim was not known immediately.
A duty officer at the British High commission told UNB over phone that “the High commissioner has been injured in the bomb blast. We understand he is now in a hospital.”
The High Commissioner might have suffered wounds in his leg. His two security guards Kalam and Abdur Rahman were also injured in the explosion.
Bangladesh-born British High Commissioner Choudhury has been admitted to Sylhet Osmany Hospital. On May 15, he submitted his credentials to the President.
UNB Sylhet Correspondent M Mohsin said police cordoned the Osmany Hospital, Noor Jahan clinic and the Mazar premises preventing people and journalists from entering the areas.
The Deputy Commissioner and five other injured people have been admitted to Noor Jahan Clinic at the mazar gate.
The DC might have suffered splinter injuries in his legs. His guard Jibon was also injured in the explosion and admitted to the clinic.
The injured also include president of Sylhet District Lawyers Association Abdul Hye.
Reports said dozens of people were injured in the explosion at the second gate of the mazar at around 1:45 PM.
It could not be ascertained immediately who exploded the bomb. Police put up check posts at different entry points of the city.
In February this year, five people were killed when bombs exploded at a religious gathering at the mazar premises.
