Default Stumped!

Quote:
7.1
Abdur Razzak to Prior, 1 wide, OUT, gone! What a bizzare dismissal, Prior has had a brain fade. It drifted down the leg side, Prior missed it and drags his back foot. Rahim takes off the bails and Prior is just safe, but then he stays out of his crease and Rahim shows brilliant awareness to pull the stump out of the ground to complete the stumping a second time. Brainless from Prior, superb from Rahim

MJ Prior st †Mushfiqur Rahim b Abdur Razzak 15 (35m 20b 2x4 0x6) SR: 75.00
The sleight of hand and quick thinking on feet was sure one of the highlights of last year in Tiger's history and one cannot not argue that the witticism did not play a subtle role in the England win in World Cup with Shafiul's batting being the catalyst later on the night.

The table below highlights the most number of stumpings made by a team in the past 12 months. It is of curiosity that underdogs like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe is leading- perhaps hints that in this dynamic genre of modern cricket players are resorting to unconventional wisdom and subterfuge.

And what about in the last 10 years? Picture still looks rosy with Bangladesh in the 3rd place in terms of most stumpings made.

While, people's opinion vary about Mushfiqur's butterfingers 'n slips and not being on par with Pilot, looking at individual performances it looks relatively a bright prospect that both the keepers are occupying the 5th and 6th spot in the last 10 years.

And when one considers all the stumpings ever made it appears Bangladesh is a shade above New Zealand and South Africa. This by no means reflect the real fielding nature of sides as stumping is sole focus, but, however, verdict could very well be that along with Zimbabwe it may behoove the minnows and teams with underdog titles to explore other areas of dismissals and specialize in fields overlooked or not anticipated by stronger opponents.

This is some brilliant investigative/analysis work Zeeshan. It's certainly something I doubt has been looked into. In my opinion, the high number of stumpings we've carried out are probably due to the lack of pace bowlers and countless spinners we've had in our line-up. Even India, and obviously Pakistan and Sri Lanka use at least 1 or 2 more pacers on average.

Even India, and obviously Pakistan and Sri Lanka use at least 1 or 2 more pacers on average.
Plus most of the times teams play very attacking against us. So players tend to take a lot of risks like going down the wicket which they wouldn't do against a stronger bowling line up. So maybe our keeper is getting more opportunity. If there was a way we could see how many stumping Mushy missed through out his career comparing to some of the other current wicket kepeers that would give us a much better idea as to how good mushy really is at stumping.

Zimbabwe and Bangladesh are at the top because they are spin dependant teams, and teams that have good world class spinners.

^^ which builds up pressure on the batsman and he tries to hit out the pacers, sometimes playing out of the crease and end up getting stumped

Yep, pretty much. Mushy needs to come up to the stumps while the pacers are on.

Good work Zee.
The whole thread makes me wonder where Mushy could have been if it was not the case of his butterfingers. He gets a bare minimum 40 overs every ODI with the spinners, so chances of his stats getting up the order is also higher compared to his contemporaries.

Thats why guys like Sanga, courtesy of Murali; Dhoni, courtesy of Harvajan and others and Gilly, courtesy of Warne features high on the list.

Would be great if we had the stats on his missed chances, both caught behind and stumpings.

It's a bit funny that Mushy is near the top of getting stumped himself. . .

teams with spin based attacks --> more stumpings and more chances of stumpings.

Rahim has nearly as many dismissals as Pilot, both aggregate and per innings. But he's also had far better spinners operating --> more chances than Pilot probably had, meaning he's probably fumbled quite a bit more chances than the Pilot.
