Default 3rd Kolkata Open Grandmaster Chess Tournament

The tournament started on March 23, 2008 consisting 114 players, including 18 Grandmasters, from 15 nations. Ten chess players from Bangladesh is taking part in the tournament.

After 6th round GM Ziaur Rahman is jointly leading the table with 5 points. GM Abdullah Al Rakib is jointly 2nd with 4.5 points.

And after seventh round he is third with bunch of other GMs. Lost with black pieces, in the 39th move!!

Zia wins in ninth round

Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman beat Indian International Master Konguvel Ponnuswamy in the ninth round of the 3rd Kolkata Open Grandmasters Chess Tournament at Gorky Sadan in Kolkata yesterday.

Zia improved his tally to 6.5 points to share the third place along with six other players while GM Abdullah Al Rakib, who lost his board to Rolando Nolte, and IM Enamul Hossain Rajib secured 5.5 points each. Rajib drew with Arghyadip Das of India.

Another Bangladeshi GM Niaz Murshed lost to GM David Alberto of Luxemburg to remain on five points while FM Sheikh Nasir Ahmed also secured five points after beating Arun Karthik of India.

GM Krishnan Sasikiran of India and GM Viktor Laznicka of Czech Republic were jointly leading the table with 7.5 points each.

In the ninth round, Taibur beat Laishram Imocha of India, Sagar beat KK Chatterjee of India and Parag beat Swayams Mishra of India while Javed lost against Bitan Banerjee of India and Ali lost to IM Balasubramaniun of India.

Tomorrow is the final round. There is no hope for a BD champion but there is chance to go for 2nd spot

Only half a point difference and prize money drops from 50k to 8k. That is sad.
