Default Bangladesh board keen on BPL third season

Quote:
Despite a surfeit of controversies marring the first two seasons of the Bangladesh Premier League, the BCB is looking for a window in the coming season to host the league again. The second edition was held in January-February 2013, after which problems over player payment and a prolonged match-fixing investigation stalled the domestic T20 tournament.

At this stage, the November 2014 to January 2015 slot is being looked at by the BCB. Bangladesh are scheduled to take on Zimbabwe in a Test series in early November, while according to the Future Tours Programme (FTP), Pakistan are supposed to tour Bangladesh in January 2015.

"BCB is willing to stage the BPL," Ismail Haider Mallick, BPL governing council's member secretary, said. "We have selected an approximate date to hold the tournament. We are looking to arrange the tournament between November 2014 and January 2015. However, we of course have to see the international and local cricket's schedule first."

Mallick also said that the tournament's event management company, Game On Sports, have paid Tk 10 crore ($1.3 million) of the 19 crore (approx $2.45 million) it owed to the BPL, albeit in three parts. "Game On Sports has given a cheque worth Tk 10 crore. We already received Tk 2.5 crore (approx $323,000) and we will get another 2.5 crore by April 20 while we will be receiving the remaining Tk 5 crore (approx $645,000) very soon," he said.

Whether this payment would be used to pay the players was left unsaid, but it is one of two major problems in the BPL. Even now, several players have remained unpaid. The last reported claim was on February 28 when Netherlands' Ryan ten Doeschate, West Indies' Kevon Cooper, Zimbabwe's Brendan Taylor and England players Ravi Bopara and Jason Roy said that they were still to get money from the Chittagong Kings.

The other major problem is the BPL corruption investigation and while the tribunal has given its short verdict, the BCB is planning to appeal against their judgment after only one individual among nine accused was found guilty of "being party to an effort to fix" a match in the 2013 BPL. The long verdict is still due, although it was to be announced shortly after the World T20 held in Bangladesh.

Last year, BCB president Nazmul Hassan had said that it would be difficult to hold the BPL without clearing it of the controversies.

What do you think? Does it have a chance? Season 2 was a trainwreck from what I heard and read.

They already have BCL. We need to have a BPL with 5-6 teams and with a salary cap of not so much. Plus, uncapped players need to be in auction also to prevent bribes and stuff.

Just goes to show where BCB's priorities are. The National team loses to Afghanistan and Hong Kong, McInnes quits because some of the fundamental requirements are not met, all the top players going backwards in terms of performance and here they are talking about restarting BPL

Then they should eliminate it or this financial controversy with players, ridiculous they don't deserve international talent to grace the BPL field of play until they give them the respect they deserve by sticking to what's agreed.

Some of the players from BPL-1 did not get paid yet and now BPL-3?

Pay the players first up and arranging some professional coaches for each level first

Money was always their priority. Every single one of those guys are loaded yet they still want more. What they don't realize is they can make way more money few years later if they decided to spend some of the money they already have. Look at India, are those guys for BCCI any less greedy? No they are not. But they realize they can make a lot more money if they invest in their cricket team and infrastructure. Meanwhile our leaders want to get the maximum with spending minimum.

Long term goal was never a priority for BCB. The reason is very simple. They know very well that they wont be involved with cricket for too long. So they try to make the best out of the limited opportunities they get. Thats the reason BCB is so ravenous for money. BCCI's case is little different. They already have an established team to work with. And the investors are lined up to work with them. So they know they will never run short of cash regardless of their actions. BCB knows that money wont come so easily for them. So, power thakte thakte taka kamay neo be it at the cost of country's interest. .

BPL gives us wings , so I'm all for it, just one change I want is to not hunt big players with big money & not pay them.

Well if you can pay a good percentage upon arrival and then game by game, players will have the stronghold of choosing whether to continue or not.

The problem with BPL from the begining is we wanted to start with a BIG BANG and compete with IPL with a non-sustainable financial model. The warning of the "end result" (what we have seen) was always there in the wall, but BCB and Fans ignored it.

I think for BPL to be successfull, we need to start with a smaller budget, a sustainable one, even if it means that we cannot attrack the top superstars of the world ...that's ok. Forget IPL caps, lets set player's and team's cap much lower and more realistic one... lets play BPL for few years and slowly increase the cap when we are certain that we can support more higher end players and bigger budget.

I think we have enough local (fan) support to make it a success even with local players and some medium caliber internatioanl superstars. Some associate teams has some really interesing players who will make it more international without breaking the bank.

Watching IPL for the 1st time this season and I think it is helping Indian young and fringe cricketers immensely to play cricket which is as close to international cricket as possible. So, I am all for BPL even with lower class players (players like Bopara, Brendon Taylor, Angelo Mathews, Fidel Edwards) but the teams must have same strength and not like last BPL when Dhaka has Pollard, Dilshan, Gayle, and Shakib, when Rangpur was so weak. It will really give the selectors a chance to see who shines in tough conditions against good players.

Even a BPL with local only players is better than no BPL at all.

Playing against and alongside experienced and perhaps more capable foreign players is obviously beneficial.

But equally important is the competitive nature of the tournament, and how it puts players in the spotlight. The eyes of the nation are on each and every ball. There is pressure to perform, competition. This brings out the best in every player. Gives opportunity for fringe, and the up and coming to show their mettle. And not just players, even gives coaching personnel a chance their prove their ability-given most franchises preferred to use local coaches in second edition.
