That's quite a statement.
I think most Indians don't even know how much Bengalis have dominated and shaped the entire Indian cultural identity.
Heck, the national anthem is by a bengali.
Even Vande Mataram is by Bankimchandra.
An Indian gets a nobel prize in Lit. He is a Bengali.
An Indian gets a nobel prize in Economics. Bengali.
An Indian gets an Oscar. Bengali.

So we might say Nora Jhones is also bengali as she is the daughter of Pandit Ravi Shankar.

Nah. Ravi Shankar left her as a child. She grew up entirely with her American mother.

I think she got her music talant from her dad. It is genetic. Her music style comes very close to classic subcontinent music. Vocal based with easy listening style goes with soft piano.

I have given it time. There's nothing subcontinental about her voice. It's slow jazz. HUndreds of singers like her have performed before.

Bengalis in Hindi Film Music
An "International cricket" thread becoming an "Forget cricket" thread
There are/have been quite a few Bengalis in the field of Hindi film music. Similarly there have been people in the field of Hindi film music from a lot of other ethnic groups of India and even from abroad. It is not necessary that all fans of Hindi film music will necessarily be aware of the ethnic background of the artists.
Just as Bengali artists have sung/composed music in Hindi movies, non-Bengali artists have also sung in Bengali movies.
This is a vast and interesting subject, beyond the scope of this thread.

Is he one who plays the Tabla ? If so, Ustad Zakir Hussain would also be Bengali.

My mum used to like Usha Utthup (spelling?) - She sang few songs for Bollywood, I would guess.

Usha Uthup nee Iyer is a Tamil living in Kolkata. That makes her a Bengali I guess. But by that logic, most of the Bengalis who made their marks in Hindi film music and in other fields did so after leaving Bengal .

Perhaps the most versatile of them all was the maverick Kishore Kumar. However he was born and brought up in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. He has given rise to a number of clones who are also quite successful e.g. Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet etc. In fact, one can find Kishore Kumar clones of very high calibre in every major city in India.
