Default Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) to begin from August 10

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is proud to announce the birth of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) Twenty20 tournament commencing from August 10 to August 31, 2012 (both dates inclusive) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and the Pallekele Stadium in Kandy.

Twenty20’s massive popularity and status as the most exciting and entertaining format of cricket will be further enhanced by this newest tournament to the world of cricket. The tournament will be held in line with the MCC “SPIRIT OF CRICKET” guidelines.International players will be playing in the SLPL alongside Sri Lankan national cricketers and young Lankan hopefuls.

The first edition of SLPL Twenty20 will feature 7 Provincial teams which will adhere to a compulsory ruling of no more than 6 overseas players in each squad. However, it will be mandatory for each team to field only 4 overseas players in the playing eleven, whilst the remaining 7 players will all be Sri Lankans, with one player out of the said seven players will be an under-21 cricketer.

SLC shall, through this tournament, increase the number of Provincial teams from the existing number of 5 teams to 7 teams, in order to provide more opportunities to a vast number of talented players who are striving to advance to the next level of their cricketing abilities.

Each Provincial team shall draw elements of its unique branding/personality from the Province it represents.

The Provinces in pursuit of the SLPL 2012 Title for Season 1 are as follows:-

Basnahira Bears
Kandurata Kites
Nagenahira Nagas
Ruhuna Rhinos
Uthura Oryxes
Uva Unicorns
Wayamba Wolves

The names of the respective Sri Lankan Icon Players for each Province will be released shortly.

All 24 matches will be telecast live globally, and SLC believes that millions of television viewers across the globe will enjoy this tournament.

We need to get in as many of our players as possible since the WC is in SL. On an another note, I like the idea that atleast one out of the remaining 7 SL players in the starting XI should be U-21

Indians buy out SLPL franchises

Sports Desk
banglanews24.com/espnstar

Colombo: Indian business enterprises showed keen interest in the inaugural edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League and bought all the seven franchises on offer.

However, The BCCI had last year prohibited its players from participating in the league, which forced the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) to abort the opening season of the SLPL.

While Wadhawan Holdings shelled out the highest bid – US$ 5.02 million -- for Wayamba, Number One Sports Consulting offered a bid of US$ 4.98 million for Kandurata.

The Uva and Ruhuna went to Success Sports and Pearl Overseas respectively for an amount of US$ 4.6 million.

Basnahira was bought by Indian Cricket Dundee at US$ 4.33 million, while Uthura at US$ 3.4 million went to Rudra Sports.

Varun Beverages, meanwhile, spent US$ 3.22 million for Nagenahira.

The debut edition of the SLPL is scheduled to commence from August 10, with the final to be held on August 31.

The matches will be played in Colombo and Pallekele.

The franchises will be allowed a maximum of 18 players, including six foreign cricketers, for registration. However, a team can play only two foreigners in the playing eleven.

The value of each player will be decided by SLC in the player draft to be held on July 5 and 6.

Only 2 foreign players? While this is good for SL as their local players will get more chances but SLPL might struggle to get International crowd. But since all the franchises are Indian company owned maybe they don't need the whole world to follow just India alone might do.

How do they even get Indian crowd with two foreign players playing?? Indians won't flock to watch the franchisees. Then even those two players have to be Indians..it's gonna be one boaring tournament and if the pitches are like usual low scoring and turning Lankan pitches, then it will be a flop tournament. I think this two player policy will change as soon as the franchisees take control ...

I think it won't be comparable to BPL but they were smart enough not to copy the IPL's auction system, its just not feasible.

No SLPL till board settles central contracts - Jayawardene

ESPNcricinfo staff

Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene has said that the country's cricketers may decide against taking part in the inaugural season of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) if the Sri Lanka board doesn't 'settle' the players' central contracts.

"We will only sign SLPL contracts once the central contracts of Sri Lanka players are settled," Jayawardene said at the launch of the SLPL. "We discussed it about a month ago, before the Pakistan tour. I hope we can sort it out within the next few days."

The players and board have been negotiating contracts since March this year, and this issue follows the saga of delay in player payments.

SLC had announced a list of 107 local players and 56 overseas players for the first edition of the SLPL, which is set to start on August 10. Jayawardene is part of the Wayamba franchise.
