Preview for the 1st test match

Stats and trivia
-Alastair Cook needs 36 runs to become the 12th player - and first Englishman - to 10,000 in Tests. If he gets there in this Test, he will be the youngest to do so.
-England's only victory in their last six Tests at Headingley came in 2013 against New Zealand. They have lost four and drawn one.
-Rangana Herath needs three wickets to become the third Sri Lankan to 300 in Tests.
If Sri Lanka's last tour had been played using the proposed multiformat points system, they would have won 14-6 (with four points for a Test win, two for a draw, two for a limited-overs win).

Srilanka is playing like prior 2010 BD.
Take some advantage early, then let go the chance to allow opponent even out, proving it is quite a good pitch to bat. Then just start horribly with a fragile top order. Wait for some consolation for lower middle to chip away a follow-on.

SL isnt as week as we all are thinking, SL always had problem with moving ball(as do we) and playing england in swinging condition with a roaring james anderson isn't same as playing us in srilanka or BD.
As long is herath is there Tests will be tough against srilanka in the sub con. Limited over though is a different ball game

^ SL will take some time to replace legends. We can draw a series against them. For England, bring it on.

England took out some of the vengeance of the WT20 world cup loss to WI...and absolutely spanked SL

Srilanka onthe way to another innings defeat... This side remind me of old Bangladesh test side..poor
Other than Herath and Mathews I dot see much quality in the Srilankan side... and Herath is 38... It'd take a long time to fill the gaps left by Sanga & Jayawardene
A full series between Srilanka & BD is a must

Darn...I left when Ali was on 80....guy finished unbeaten on 155..
Sri Lanka's batting is unable to cope with the stalwarts, Anderson and Broad.

I'm just annoyed that we are not getting enough games but Srilanka are.

Congrats to Cook for 10, 000 test runs.
England with a comfortable 9 wicket victory goes up 2-0 in the series.

They should struggle in almost every format from now on unless some great batting or bowling talent arrives to replace the legends who just retired (Mahela, Sanga Dilshan trio)...
After Herath, Matthews and Chandimal(who is not a legend but somewhat dependable player) retires Sri Lanka needs dire replacements ASAP. they have a good system but none of the current players are that talented or even consistent enough to fill the vacant slots. that's just the harsh reality.
I could be completely wrong and there could be hope...Shanka looks like a decent allrounder prospect.

Sri Lanka are a team in transition to be fair and was good to see some fight yesterday before they finally lost.
Need to be patient with them as was never going to be easy against the likes of Anderson and Broad in the English spring. Afterall, India got slaughtered too in their last two tours to England in the midst of the English summer! Should they stick to T20 cricket too?

Even when we were losing those test matches...we had potential ATG's in domestic cricket like Binny, Akhsar Patel, Bumrah etc etc. So our transition was swift and now again we are a force. Where is SriLanka's bence strength? Their cricket is finished.

I would say Sri Lanka probably has the best bowling department (including the bench strength) in Asia at the moment so it is just their batsmen that need to piece it together. Mathews averages 50, Chandimal is becoming more consistent, still need more from Thirmane and the young number 3 Kusal Mendis is looking the apart. They have Kusal Perera making a come back soon and watch out for the likes of Angelo Perera who isn't in the team but is supposedly a rising star over there.
With regards to India, transition or not I don't believe they would have done any better in these conditions. Apart from Dravid in the 2011 tour, Anderson & co ran rings round the Indian batsmen and if I remember correctly Kohli couldn't even buy a run in those tests 2 years ago.

Apologies, but it was only a slight digression to highlight that in actual fact these young Sri Lankans are not the only ones to struggle in these conditions against that opposition and are far from being deemed just a T20 side who should give up the longer format.
