Default Bangladesh and sports

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this I wanted to discuss about our sporting achievements.
What is it about our country which is the reason why we suck in sports. We suck in pretty much everything compared to our neighbors. Watching BD Olympic team show up with only 5 participants that too all through wild card process while tiny countries like Maldives had more participants really hurt me. we have a huge population so why are talents so hard to find? only sport we can brag about is cricket and that too we aren't as good as we should be. We can blame the economy but there are poorer countries doing better then us.

A few factors to consider:

1. Work ethic, or lack thereof. Sure, you have hard-working people in Bangladesh, but for the most part, people are too laid back and happy with what they have - there seems to be very little drive to achieve more, be the best one can. Above average yet not exceptional talent can sometimes be molded into a winning habit, but for that to happen, the shortcomings in the talent bucket need to be compensated for with extreme hard work and training. Careers need to be treated as careers and not just a job that pays the bills and lets one come home and take a nap. Goals should be clearly defined and the path to reach them adhered to. If there's a better opportunity in Dhaka, don't stay back in Chittagong and sacrifice an improved life just because the local chicken haleem tastes better. We are culturally very lazy and the diet doesn't help; then again, look at how well China is doing in various sports even with an insane amount of rice in the diet. For a nation of 150 million, talent should be abundant. Change the attitude and half the battle might just be won.

2. Funds: There's no alternative to pouring the riches in to be able to compete with the best. The futbol team can be much better than it currently is. So can other athletes, at least at the SAAF level. Why do we need to import a gymnast from Michigan? When people can't eat, there's no point expecting somebody to give up a job that yields greater immediate monetary returns to come to your rigorous training spanning years, for free/pocket change. Pay these sissies so that you can *whip* them to glory.

3. But with funds come corruption. Funding jodi board President er nati-putira khaya felay taile back to ground zero.

4. Organization: We struggle to stage the NCL on a regular basis, let alone organizing training camps for some of the less popular sports. In a nation where people don't like to do their jobs and the process of getting something, anything done resembles a pathway through hell, the showstoppers are too many for effective organization.

To add to the attitude factor:

Baap: @#!$%@ porashona chaira table tennis khelos? Bathroom e niya jhata diya pither chaal tuila falamu koilam!

Pola (mone mone): Thaak, bhabsilam Weixing Chen homu, ekhon dehi Jogodish Chondro hoite pari kina, pither chaal ta to ontoto okkhoto thakbo.

Pola, with zero academic talent but extreme sporting potential, goes on to become a 9-5 er like his daddy, barely paying the bills and struggling through life as a typical "educated" (MA paash), goalless, lazy Bangladeshi adult.

nicely said, its definitely the attitude that is the main problem. Most bengalis still find it hard to accept that a sport can be a full time career. We also have very simple mentality where most peoples goal is to become doctor/engineer/teacher etc.
Funding would come if the people start taking priority in theses things but i guess that wont happen when the main priority is still fighting poverty. But its just strange how almost every other countries are doing better despite being in worse conditions. Population wise we are the worse country in sports.
by the way how behind is our hockey team compared to india or pakistan?

most Bangali parents would say 'khela dula bacha de jonno'. Mirroring on what ATMR said Bangali parents dont take sports seriously or even think that you can make a career from sports. China with their daily routine/activities are naturally a fit country and i think sports is a main component of their life to stay fit. Thats not the case in Bangladesh.

Isn't that mentality prevalent even in India and Pakistan? They're still decent in sports such as cricket and hockey.

India with their 1.5 billion population and supposedly rising super power economy is still a big joke when it comes to international sports. They are behind countries like Azerbaijan in the olympics.

There is a reason why parents push their kids more into school and less into sports. Professional sportsman is just not a viable career option in our country yet, esp in Olympic sports. I don't think any athlete can support his/her family just by running tracks, swimming, gymnastics or shooting. Heck, even the athletic department or swimming association can't support themselves and their infrastructure is crumbling so let alone the players making a living out of this.

Only recently there has been some money in cricket. BCB contracts, DPL and BPL provides enough money and fame. So until and unless other sports becomes lucrative, we won't see any success in them. Government funding and Private sector investment is necessary.

fair enough

The reason why parents dont want it is because there is only a handful of bangladeshi sportsperson who earn just enough to live a proper lifestyle. The rest earn 30000 taka at max, so it doesnt make sense to quite studies which can almost gurantee a good future given you work hard. But in sports you can never tell.

The authorities need to improve everything, put more funding on sports like shooting, race, marathon. Then only will parents will be encouraged to let their children pursue an alternative career.

I dont blame parents at all

But why do we have to choose between sports and education why is it not possible to do both? In UK we have full physical education lessons from priamry school to right into GCSEswhich covers pretty much all kind of sports. Something like this could be implemented in bangladesh schools. Yes it would require a lot of funding for equipments etc but at the begining we could use natural facilities like organise 100m sprinting on the school fields or take the kids to the nearest pukur for swimming lessons. I know there are sports days but that's like once a year it should be 3-4 hours every week.

It's ok to encourage kids to go to school, but not ok to discourage them to pursue sports. The two can go hand in hand. If the kid doesn't make it big in the play field, there's always the option of falling back to his/her education.

But to say that his/her pither chaal will be ripped apart at the slightest hint that he/she is interested in an extracurricular activity is pathetic. Metric porikkhary stand korar por polapain BTV te bhashon dey, "Ami bhor 5tar shomoy ghum theke uthtam, daaine takaitam na, baaye takaitam na, shoja boisha boisha pora mukhostho kortam...prottek din 18 ghonta portam". Thats no longer an option in the modern generation. Ask me, i am a witness. When most of you were young, or of my age all of you would study at school the whole morning and do homework during late evening. So you guys where free in the afternoon and also had the luxury of a playing field nearby.

Well things have changed drastically bro, and i stand witness. Amader bikaler shomoita coachinge bhora to khelar proshno uthe na, plus bekar thakleo khela jabe na karon amador khelar math nai kono.

This is the mentality of our players. Not only cricketers but the whole nation is full of sissies.

^ Reminds me of the time when Raqibul Hasan opined that we can't compete in T20s because we're not white: http://www.banglacricket.com/alochon...1&postcount=47

Ekektar kotha shunle mathay emon rokto uthe je ek roja mone hoy 10 bar bhenge jawar obostha hoy.
