Restaurants and wedding halls in Gaddafi to close for matches

LAHORE: District Coordination Officer (DCO) Mian Muhammad Ijaz has ordered the closure of restaurants and wedding halls near the Gaddafi Stadium on April 7, 8, 12, and 13, following the cricket matches between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, the DCO said that the restaurants and wedding halls would be kept closed on match days for security reasons.

He said that sufficient security arrangements at parking stands would be made and the public would be apprised of alternative traffic plans.

He directed the authorities concerned, including the Water and Sanitation Agency, Solid Waste Management Department, Health Department, and the Parks and Horticulture Authority, to remain vigilant during the match days and make necessary arrangements to facilitate the public. He also said that special students would be provided with separate seats and food in the stadium.

PCB to use generators for third ODI match

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to use generators to lit their floodlights and use the Wapda power supply as the back during the third ODI to be played at the Gaddafi Stadium today (Sunday).

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board has rejected that they were responsible for the failure of the floodlights during the first match of the series against Bangladesh at Gaddafi Stadium and blamed Wapda for the power supply failure. In a statement issued on Saturday, PCB further said that the super sopper during the second ODI at Iqbal Stadium Faisalabad was working and it kept on operating in the ground more than one hour but the water was pooled due to uneven ground that took long time to dry the rainy water to make the ground fit for play.

It is pertinent to note that the pump of the super sopper did not work properly at Faisalabad and it never expelled the sucked water during its prolonged working rather the ground was dried up by the tarpaulin tied behind a tractor while the ground staff sucked the pooled water from the pitch cover with pieces of foam. The driver of the super sopper parked it outside the boundary rope twice for its non-functioning but he was asked to keep it running to dry up the ground.

Two changes in Pak team for 3rd ODI

LAHORE, Apr 12 (APP): Batsman Bazid Khan and pace bowler Sohail Khan will be part of the Pakistan cricket team which will play Bangladesh in the third one day international on Sunday at Gadaffi stadium.

Bazid Khan will be replacing dashing batsman Younis Khan who has been granted rest by the selectors on his request while Sohail will be the sixth bowler to be added in the final playing side, team sources told APP here on Saturday night.

“We want to try out some young players and Bazid will strengthen batting while Sohail will add fire to pace battery”, they said.

Asif to be considered for Pak's last two ODIs

Karachi (PTI): Pakistan pacer Mohammad Asif will be considered for the last two one-day internationals and the Twenty20 match against Bangladesh by the national selection committee.

Chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday that Asif had shown impressive recovery from his chronic elbow problem and he would be considered for the remaining matches against Bangladesh.

"We will sit down with the captain and coach and discuss Asif's recovery and selection. It is time he was eased back into international competition and this is the best time to do it if he is 100 per cent fit," Salahuddin said.

Asif made a comeback to competitive cricket last week after a six month layoff due to his elbow injury, bowling in a domestic limited overs match here.

He last played his international match against South Africa in October last year before breaking down with his elbow problem that required surgery in Australia earlier this year.

After the domestic game, Asif had said he was ready to make a comeback to international cricket but the final decision was with the selectors.

Bangladesh are currently playing a five-match ODI series in Pakistan.

Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan fast bowler, has made an unexpected comeback to the national side six months after his last appearance. A lingering elbow problem had initially ruled him out of the Bangladesh series but he showed impressive recovery and was drafted into Pakistan's squad for the fourth one-day international in Multan.

Asif has had a prolonged struggle with an elbow problem which kept him out of international cricket since October 2007, and late last month it was determined that he hadn't completed his rehabilitation from an elbow surgery he underwent in Sydney last December. But Asif made a comeback to competitive cricket last week, bowling in a domestic limited-overs match in Karachi.

Pakistan made another change to the 16-man squad. With Nasir Jamshed ruled out with a hand injury, sustained before the third match, Naumanullah was rewarded for a prolific domestic season in which he scored 1235 first-class runs at 53.69, with four hundreds, and 269 in limited-overs appearances.

After being named the best batsman in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy for the 2007-08 season he was included in Pakistan's 15-man squad for the final ODI against Zimbabwe in February.

The second ODI is in Multan on April 16 followed by the final fixture in Karachi three days later.

Selectors want to include more rookies in final ODI

KARACHI: Pakistani selectors are in a dilemma ahead of tomorrow’s final one-dayer against Zimbabwe as they want to blood a few more youngsters in the dead rubber but are also keen that the hosts complete a whitewash in front of an audience that will include President Pervez Musharraf.

Chief selector Salahuddin Ahmed told ‘The News’ on Thursday that the selection committee is looking forward to fielding a couple of more rookies in last one-dayer here at the National Stadium.

“We’ve been trying out youngsters in the current series after having done that against Zimbabwe (earlier this year),” said the former Test cricketer. “Our team is already 4-0 up in the series and it’s an excellent opportunity to introduce some fresh faces and check out their skills and temperament,” he pointed.

But Salahuddin was quick to add that the selectors and the Pakistan team management was also very keen on winning the series 5-0 after having achieved a similar result against Zimbabwe.

“Bangladesh may not be a very strong side but a whitewash against them will come as a morale-booster for our team which is facing a couple of important assignments later this year,” he said.

Pakistan are to host the Asia Cup this summer followed by their biggest assignment of the year — the ICC Champions Trophy — which is also scheduled to be held here in September.

Apart from completing a clean sweep, another factor that is stopping the selectors from fielding a new-look side in the Karachi game is that President Musharraf is likely to witness the match. The country’s cricket bosses do not want him to attend a game that might result in an embarrassing defeat for Pakistan against lowly opponents.

But in spite of the tricky scenario, one is expecting a few changes in the team that won the previous game in Multan by seven wickets.

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan is back after missing the previous two games. He was included in the squad for the final one-dayer after the Karachi-based batsman informed the selectors about his availability.

Younis is all set to play tomorrow while prolific Karachi batsman Naumanullah is likely to make his One-Day International debut in front of his home crowd.

The selectors have dropped fast bowler Sohail Khan and are expected to introduce 22-year-old Lahore pacer Wahab Riaz in the attack.

Young wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed is also in line to stretch his nascent international career, coming in place of the in-form Kamran Akmal.

The Pakistan Cricket Board's effort to host a home series received another jolt with the West Indies turning down an invitation to play a one-day series later in the year.

After being rejected by Australia, India and Sri Lanka for security reasons and scheduling problems, the PCB has now been told by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) that they can't undertake a tour in August due to prior engagements.

The PCB had invited West Indies and New Zealand to play a three-match ODI series in August to give its team some practice before the Champions Trophy in September. This would have also helped the PCB recover from the financial setback suffered due to the postponement of Australia's tour in March. Bangladesh are currently in the country for a five-match ODI series and a Twenty20 international to cover for Australia's pull-out.

"Yes, the West Indies board has informed us that since they are already committed to play some games in Canada in August, they can't accept our invitation," Shafqat Nagmi, the PCB's chief operating officer, said. "We have sent a fresh invitation to New Zealand asking them to come and play a full five-match one-day series instead of three ODIs. We are awaiting a reply from them."

Pakistan should be very happy that BD toured there under dire crcumstances and had a chance to improve on their ODI rankings They had the luck to play 2 weaker teams (Zim & BD)than themselves to do do this, and they will now overtake SL in ICC rankings.
That moron of a commentator is always saying negative remarks about BD cricket. i wished that BCB had never accepted their invitation, then they would not have any international cricket for a while.

Those morons at the BCB planned this tour very poorly, should have had a few practice practices, given BD more time to play the first match, at least 2 full days and nights from the time they reached the hotel in Lahore and a practice match to get warmed up.

Pakistan name Twenty20 squad

Pakistan have included youngsters Shoaib Khan and Mansoor Amjad in the 15-member squad for the one-off Twenty20 international against Bangladesh in Karachi.

Shoaib is an opening batsman, while Amjad is a legspinner. However, it's unlikely they will feature in the match, as the squad has all of Pakistan's ODI regulars, except Mohammad Yousuf, who had been dropped for last year's World Twenty20 as well. Nasir Jamshed comes in his place.

Younis Khan, who had opted out of the ODI series before making himself available for the fifth one in Karachi, has been included as well.

Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul, both of whom who made comebacks during the ODIs following injury layoffs, have been included in the squad, along with Sohail Tanvir, Wahab Riaz and Rao Iftikhar Anjum.
