Default Do we have to have 3 pacers??

Pakistan is supposedly good against any pace attack.

Just in order to have '3' pacers in the side - we are trying to find a pacer in the side. Except Koushik and Tapash, all other pacers are below par. This 3rd pacer will cost Bangladesh many runs and one batting-allrounder spot. Shujon tried to fill-in this role in Australia and failed.

So why bother having the weakest link in the side. We can go with 2 pacers in the side.

I think the bowlers for the pakistan matches will be:

pacer 1
pacer 2
Sujon
spinner 1
spinner 2
spinner 3 (if needed)

since sujon is still captain and since he has not indicated that he will take himself out of the bowling, i think he will continue to play the role of all-rounder, quasi-medium pacer. i think he should take himself out of the bowling and focus only on captaining & batting, but i don't think that is going to happen. what will happen is that if he begins to do very poorly in bowling in a match, he will use spinner #3 as a replacement.

I think 3 fast bowlers is a must in test match cricket. We have some all rounders who bowl spin such as Alok and Ash, so no need to pick two specialist spinners.

Monju is a solid fast bowler. He has the experience to bowl consistently in a test match. He should definitely be the third paceman on the team behind Mashrafe and Tapash.

our bowling options:
1. Mashrafe
2. Tapash
3. Monju
4. Rafique
5. Kapali
6. Ash
7. Sujon

I agree Manju is a solid bowler. Though I feel like his performance is not as good as his earlier days.. ( 6/81 against Zim ).

It seems like we have this notion that we "have to have' 3 pacers.. We are streching our resource pool just trying to find the 3rd guy. If a spinner is more effective than a 3rd pacer - we should go with the spinner.

One of the advantages of having a spinner is - they can bowl longer spells. (It should be helpful specially in the pakistani summer-time )

About cheking the runs - the spinners can be as effective as the pacers - if they do it right.

Monjurul Islam is a very patient and accuracte fast medium bowler. I realise 'patient' and 'fast' bowler sounds like an oxymoron nut, let me explain. I Zimbabwe when Monjurul did his trick his competition was ... believe it or not Md. Sharif. We did not have a strike bowler of Mushrafee's calibre. Since then his role has changed, he has beeen asked to tie-down batsmen with a accurate line and legnth instead of attacking them, for successive series'. Attacking the batsmen have become Masri and Tapash' role. In event one of the faster bowlers break down, the presence of Monju would be invaluable. BTW anyone know what the status of Sharif's injury is?

Talha was reduced to age group cricket oncemore. Oddly, they have picked Alamgir Kabir in the team.

Sharif is still inthe injured list, he was our best pacer with the older ball as he could supposedly swing it.

Between Tapash and Manju, I would pick Manju. I loved the way Tapash bowled against Kenya in the world cup and probably the only reason he failed in Australia was because of the class of the oppostion. Based on the wicket, we could go in with ll three (incl. masri).

Hey James,

I thought Sujon already answered your questions about Talha. That is, after the two of you had a very deep and thoughtful conversation about the weather.

i think 3 pacers is fine. Depending on circumstances and the team selected, it is most likely that all 3 of sanwar, alok and rafiq will play. in that case you don't need another spinner. that will leave 3 places for pace bowlers anyway, so you may as well have all 3. If you think 2 is enough then you could pick another batsmen or find a place in the side for a specialist captain, lol. I think the 3 best are masri, tapash and manju, they will at least you keep it tight and there is a bit of variety there. i havent seen much of the others but i saw talha touching 145km/h once against sri lanka. if he really is that quick usually he must be close to a place in the side. Where is he? i don't hink he's injured! Yes he is raw and a bit wayward but someone who will at least worry the batsmen would be a welcome sight, these days the pacers only pick up a wicket when a batsmen tries to hit them for one boundary to many (maybe apart from masri).
