this is an interesting thing.
to be honest, none of our pacers exploited the conditions, and they are not bad pacers. all 3 are pretty decent.
but lets be honest, they are not dale steyn, or ntini level. maybe on home pitches they are better than a ntini. but did u see the steyn and ntini wickets?
steyn and ntini bowled some absolute brutes, in the short time i watched, yet the wickets came from their WORST balls of that spell. thats saying something, when you bowl 30-40 deliveries per spell. i saw tamim AND junaid survive 39 of ntini's BEST balls, and fall to his worst.
similarily, robin, mortaza, and to a lesser extend rajib bowled some pretty decent balls during the 2 test series. how do i know?
CI might mention the words "excellent delivery" or "very good bouncer, so and so does well to duck under it" once every other Test match we play.
yet this series, robin had several "how did that miss?" and "swings sharply at pace" comments. mash of course is probably the leading bowler in test cricket history of bowling wicket balls, without getting the wicket due to fielder drops, umpire descions, and plain bad luck. rajib got quite a few testing bouncers in as well. CI never mentions these things, but they had plenty this time around.
our pacers enjoyed the conditions, and they just got unlucky. edges that didn't carry, balls that swung a tad too much to go down leg, etc. and they played, IMO the equal best team in the world (aussies have dropped to 3rd at least) on their own soil. if a few things were different, we would have made the saffers sweat hard to beat us. and we rarely do that in tests.
in conclusion, though i am frustrated by the final scoreline, i think this was our best test series in a while. we really did some impressive things which we haven't done before. it was definitely an improvement, and being sufficiently competitive in tests will take us at least another 5 years.
but i am fairly pleased by this series. perhaps its just me.
