May be if I were an Imam, I would have delivered the following as Eid Khutbah:

***
O Muslims! The month of Ramadan has ended – now is the time to do an honest self-evaluation, and find out if we have achieved the goal of Ramadan.

The goal of Ramadan was to attain taqwa (being conscious of Allah), as Allah mentioned:

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous –

My dear Muslims! It will not be an overstatement if we say that the ultimate and comprehensive goal of our religion is to attain the taqwa of Allah. In fact, the wasiyyah (the concise legacy or the final word) of Allah for his slaves is attainment of taqwa:

And to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And We have instructed those who were given the Scripture before you and yourselves to fear Allah . But if you disbelieve – then to Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And ever is Allah Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Additionally, the wasiyya of His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) for his nation is also taqwa:

On the authority of Abu Najeeh al-Irbaad ibn Saariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) delivered an admonition that made our hearts fearful and our eyes tearful. We said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is as if it were a farewell admonition, so advise us.” He said, “I advise you to have taqwa of Allah.” (Recorded in Abu Daawood and al-Tirmidhi)

We started the month of Ramadan with the goal of attaining taqwa. And Allah ended the month of Ramadan by saying we should glorify Him:

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

O Muslims! Glorification of Allah, as referred in the verse above, does not only mean saying takbeer or saying Allahuakbar. It means making Allah the first priority in everything you do in this world. That is the true meaning of glorifying Allah. And that is the true meaning or essence of worship. Worship is not confined or compartmentalized in prescribed daily or monthly or annual rituals; worship in our religion means choosing what Allah wants us to do at each and every moment, at each and every action. And we are supposed to worship Allah until there comes the certainty, meaning death:

And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty (death).

O Muslims: Ask yourself:

Have you attained a heart that is full of taqwa of Allah?

Have you attained a heart that experiences the sweetness of faith?

Have you attained a heart that is truly remorseful of your past sins?

Have you attained a heart that sprints to do good deeds and acts of obedience?

Have you attained a heart that increases in faith and awe whenever Allah and His verses are mentioned?

Have you attained a heart that truly despises disbelief, transgression, and acts of disobedience?

Have you attained a heart that is free of jealousy, showing off, and spite?

Have you attained a heart that is full of tranquility (sakeenah) about Allah’s Decree?

Have you attained a heart that is well-protected against the insecurities created by Satan?

Have you attained a heart that is full of positive thoughts about Allah?

Have you attained a heart that is strong enough to say NO when your lower self throws a tantrum to commit a sin?

Have you attained a heart that is strong enough to say NO to a sin whenever Satan whispers and tempts you?

Have you attained a heart that enjoys worshiping Allah and not just want to get done with it in a perfunctory manner?

Have you attained a heart that frequently remembers death and ponders over the true nature of this world?

Have you attained a heart that often remembers the less fortunate Muslims around the world?

O Muslims! Remember the following scary hadith from the Messenger of Allah

Thawbaan رضي الله عنه narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“I indeed know that some people from my Ummah will come on the Day of Judgment with good deeds like the white mountains of Tihama, but Allah will make them scattered dust.” Thawban said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us, so that we may not be one of them without knowing it!’ He صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “They will be your brothers, and from your people, and they will take from the night as you do (meaning prayers, etc.), but they are a people who, when they were alone with the prohibitions of Allah, violated them.”

(Ibn Maajah) al-Kanaani, the author of Misbaah az-Zujaajah, said this hadith is sound and its narrators are trustworthy.

Therefore, enjoy from what Allah has made halal, and stay clear of the haram. Don’t destroy what you have attained in the month of Ramadan. We don’t worship Ramadan, we worship Allah, and we are supposed to worship Him till death, and the day of Eid is no exception.

And only if we can remain steadfast, the angels of mercy will descend at the time of our death and bring the glad tidings of paradise:

“Indeed, those who have said, ‘Our Lord is Allāh’ and then remained on a right course – the angels will descend upon them, [saying], ‘Do not fear and do not grieve but receive good tidings of Paradise, which you were promised.’”

Eid Mubarak and KEEP IT HALAL.

O Allah! Accept whatever we were able to do by Your Mercy in the month of Ramadan, and bless each of us with a “qalbun saleem”.

The day of joy for some. May this joy help in the judgment day. The rest are mostly losers of the highest degree. May Allah Subhana watala forgive our sins, accept our fasting, prayers, charity and all the good deeds that we did in the previous blessed month. May we have the opportunity in 11 months greet the Month of Ramadan correctly.
