I am with you.. but nowadays prettiness really doesn't matter...it's how you present yourself and what you are actually made of... In that respect this Paromita girl is a shining jewel !!!

aapni ki next 105 din cricket celibacy te chole gelen naki.

A huge match coming up in the Champions Trophy. The fate of 3 teams hang in the balance.

1. AUS defeats SL by a huge margin, AUS goes through.
2. AUS beats SL by a small margin, NZ goes through.
3. SL beats AUS by any margin, SL goes through.

khela jome uthhechhe, ki bolen?

^agreed. change of discussion is needed.

anyway, i was flipping channels and came across this 'natural disasters' documentary on TV. And of course BD is mentioned and they spend a lot of time on 1970 Bhola Cyclone (affecting BD and West Bengal). 500,000 people died with millions more becoming homeless. Then West Pakistan gov't delayed the aid response which resulted in more death and famine followed. The disaster inspired "concert for Bangladesh".

The cyclone was regarded the most destructive (in terms of human toll) of the 20th century.

I was surprised to learn all these new facts. There was merely a mention of in school textbooks and I had no idea it was that devastating.

I think our history education is flawed, esp in english medium schools. I learned more about greek and roman empires in school than our national history, be it 1952/1969-71 and then post 71 (mujib govt, zia's ascension, ershad regime).

Education in general is flawed and nothing but brainwashing.

Specially when it comes to history. The syllabus in the board exams were set by the first governments to fit their political agenda. Only in the later stages like bachelors/masters in arts we get to learn a somewhat unbiased curriculum. And this goes for almost all nations.

Agreed. In Bangladesh, the extent of change in history is disturbingly high.

no unfortunately i have not. the history textbooks had no topics on them. truth be told, most of the eng medium textbooks are published in India. While its good for science and other subjects, their history textbooks lacks our own history. so we studied greeks, romans, egyptians, genghis khan, indus valley civilizations.

well maybe the situation changed now. i am speaking of experiences from 10 years ago.

Not to pick on you, but I agree that Indian textbooks doesn't include our history instead reinforces their history which is why I studies greeks, romans, egyptians, genghis khan, indus valley civilizations.

What is the purpose of education anyways? To stimulate creativity and imagination in children or to feed one's own socio-religio-political agenda on the little ones brainwashing and reprogramming them fueling from one's own vengeance or bias? Of course, atrocities, dead bodies, war, cyclones happens in a country. It's not that they are not important, but FFS I think children and their tabula rasa should NOT be overloaded with one's own bias thinking it's "IMPORTANT". I don't want a five year old to talk about gun control or abortion. And that is why you have in Shahbag protest six year old's saying : "razakarer fashi chai"....

Should education be twerked to disseminate information or provide knowledge for "practical purposes"? I have been listenting to a lot of Sir Ken Robisnon lately and posting on facebook. Here's one:

For what it worth, I went to a English medium school and I grew up just fine. Asif went to E.m.s and he can "murder" anyone in Bangla (not my words :p).

From my 50 years of parenting, the less you interfere with a child, the better they are other than when they are heading for a semi in a freeway or about to fall of a cliff... but then again, why on God's name would they be doing in a freeway or on a cliff?

Attention mods! Attention mods! New thread needed: "Education in Bangladesh"

I went to an English medium school and took both history and geography where a big chunk was focused on regional and Bangladesh topics. That this was Senior Cambridge and not O levels might have something to do with it. Held just once a year, you were required to take a minimum of 6 subjects including a requirement to take Bangla (I took 9). I then went off to Notre Dame HSC stream and had no problems with Bangla er all.
