Elbow injury rules Praveen Kumar out of WC

Indian pace attack received a blow as Praveen Kumar has been ruled out of the World Cup just 12 days before India plays its first match against co-host Bangladesh in Dhaka on February 19.

According to sources, Praveen has not fully recovered from the elbow injury he suffered during the practice session in South Africa. He had returned home midway through the ODI series to nurse his injury and recover fully before the mega-event.

His importance for India's campaign can be judged from the fact that he was picked in the 15-member World Cup squad ahead of Ishant Sharma and S Sreesanth despite injury.

He was undergoing treatment at National Cricket Academy in Bangalore after which he went off to England. Kerala speedster Sreesanth is likely to replace the Uttar Pradesh bowler.

বিশ্বকাপের আগে দুটি প্রস্তুতি ম্যাচ অনুষ্ঠিত হওয়ার কথা ছিল শ্রীলঙ্কার পাল্লেকেলে স্টেডিয়ামে। কিন্তু ভারী বৃষ্টিপাতের কারণে মাঠ খেলার অনুপযুক্ত মনে করায় ম্যাচ দুটি সেখান থেকে সরিয়ে নেওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে আইসিসি। আজ বৃহস্পতিবার এক বিবৃতিতে এ কথা জানিয়েছেন আয়োজকেরা।
আগামী শনিবার প্রস্তুতি ম্যাচে হল্যান্ডের বিপক্ষে মাঠে নামবে স্বাগতিক শ্রীলঙ্কা। মঙ্গলবার অপর ম্যাচটিতে হল্যান্ডের মুখোমুখি হবে কেনিয়া। ভেন্যু পরিবর্তিত হওয়ার পর খেলা দুটি কোথায় হবে, তা এখনো জানাতে পারেননি আয়োজকেরা। আয়োজক কমিটির প্রধান রত্নাকর শেট্টি বলেছেন, ‘গত কয়েক সপ্তাহ ধরে ভারী বৃষ্টিপাতের কারণে পাল্লেকেলে স্টেডিয়ামটা পুরোপুরি প্রস্তুত করা যায়নি। বছরের এ সময়ে এত বৃষ্টি এর আগে কখনো হয়নি। এটা ঠিক যে প্রস্তুতি ম্যাচগুলোর জন্য মাঠটা প্রস্তুত করতে না পারা একটা বেশ বড় ধরনের প্রতিবন্ধকতা। তবে ম্যাচ দুটো সরিয়ে নেওয়ার এ সিদ্ধান্তের ফলে আরও চমত্কার পিচ তৈরি করার একটা ভালো সুযোগ পাওয়া যাবে।’
পাল্লেকেলে স্টেডিয়ামে ৮ মার্চ পাকিস্তান-নিউজিল্যান্ডের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ম্যাচটিসহ মোট তিনটি ম্যাচ অনুষ্ঠিত হওয়ার কথা আছে। প্রস্তুতি ম্যাচগুলো সরিয়ে নেওয়া হলেও এটা বিশ্বকাপের ম্যাচগুলোর ক্ষেত্রে কোনো প্রভাব ফেলবে না বলে আশ্বস্ত করেছে আইসিসি।
গত কয়েক দিনের ভারী বৃষ্টিপাত ও বন্যার কারণে শ্রীলঙ্কার বিভিন্ন অঞ্চলে অন্তত ২১ জনের প্রাণহানি হয়েছে। এ ছাড়া ক্ষয়ক্ষতির শিকার হয়েছে প্রায় ১২ লাখ লোক।
