I am one of the few in the minority who thinks there was nothing wrong with Mankad. I love Hasan Mahmud. He is very by-the-book. He simply saw the runner breaking a rule and automatically did his job and appealed out of reaction. He did nothing wrong. And later he even had the class to call him back.
If hit out and timed out are legitimate wickets, why can't Mankad be out? You fine fielder for ball hitting the helmet and other inane rules, but suddenly everyone loses their mind when it comes to Mankad.
Yes, he should have given a warning. But he didn't have to.
