Default Why do we 'Umo'?

Why?

I have been trying to teach my 6 year old daughter Bangla alphabets and some basic bangla spelling. Of her thousand questions, one of them is - why do we need 'umo'! I have had a hard time explaining this to her as I, too, think it is not needed. She asked me how it sounds like within a word - I said 'ung' (thinking of 'Bang'), she replied saying then why don't you use 'oneshshor'! I, with a red face, said 'hmm'.

So why? who came up with 'Umo'? Can anyone think of any Bangla word which uses 'Umo' but cannot also be spelt using 'onneshshor'? If not, I might just get her to do a complete 'revamp'!

It is not possible to use 'Aakar' or 'Roshshikar' after/with the alphabet 'Oneshshor' but you can use these with 'Umo'.

It should be pronounced as ranga. .With RA+Oneshshor+AA it will sound like রাং আ with no "ga" sound. I think...

The most useless alphabet in my opinion is ৯..Leee. how did it become a part of bangla bornomala?

I am positive there were SOME other alphabets which is obsolete now. We do not use it any more. Shagskrit letter conversion has created these mess. Unnecessary letters.
