Default ***What to say?***

What to say to a foreigner when he/she ask about Bangladesh?

The foreigner has no knowledge/ very little about Bangladesh.

How do you start?

Would love to hear how you would answer.

In a professional environment if your colleague wants to know about Bangladesh, how do you give him/her a 5 minute balanced view/opinion?

Don't beat around the bush. Start with the liberation war and tell them about the blood, tears and sacrifices made during the language movement and why Feb 21 is observed as mother language day. Tell them about MD Younus as well, he is quite famous globally.

Good point about the liberation war/language movement - it’s a must. Lot of the people I work with are Europeans, so you can imagine (most wont know about Younis), they struggle with Bangladesh. I want to provide them some good points about BD and balance that with some bad points, like how you would have a honest conversation.

I know the bad points, but lacking on the good ones....

I get this question asked a lot. When I am with clients this is what I normally say

-I start off with the geographical location. Surrounded mainly by India. Tell them about cyclones.
- Liberation war is what defines us. Also include 21 February. Many find this shocking to be killed for a language
- The home to Royal Bengal Tiger, Sunderbans and Coxs Bazzar
- Birth place of Mirco Credit
- Dive into the garment sector and mention ship breaking.

Perspective has changed a lot, at 2000 and at 2018

Yeah, general Americans are much more aware of BD, last 4/5 years most people I speak to recognizes Dr. Yunus, may be because of Clinton connection.

Here is something you can add to your discussion, just sort by 2022 both for GDP nominal and GDP ppp. You will be surprised by the positioning of BD.

Can you please expand on birth of Micro Credit point?
Very interesting point, any documented evidence?

British people know about Bangladesh. There’s too many of us here.
But Europeans in general have very limited knowledge of BD.

They don’t even know where it is until you say it’s near India
But usually I say it’s near Pakistan, as it allows you to talk about the liberation war.

In a nutshell I tell them micro credit are small loans to poor people who cant provide any collateral to start a business to help them come out of poverty. Then I go on to say that this was started by Prof Yunus and for his efforts was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Also I say how advanced and inexpensive the Telecoms sector BD is in comparison to Europe and also explain the concept of Bkash, where even a non smart phone can be used to make monetary transactions.

Thanks

Didn’t know about this. I know what micro credit is.
But the part about Yunus and birth of micro credit, very nice.
