you are absolutely right. this isn't the case just for coccoa beans but coffee beans as well. the farmers and farm workers are paid a pittance. this is why there is such a movement called fairtade in the the european countries. fairtrade promotes a fair pay to the farmers rather than what nestle or starbucks would pay for their coccoa beans and coffee beans. i hope that one day these fairtrade brands would be the only ones we buy, or at least until the multinationals sort out their act and start to pay the poor workers more of their share of profits.

more information can be found below -
http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/

please note the fairtrade logo below. all fairtrade goods would carry this.

in the context of chocolate, i have had various types of fairtrade chocolates and it is just as good, if not better as many of the highstreet brands like cadbury or nestle. of course, if you wish to have speciality chocolates, you have to go to the likes of thorntons or other specialist confectioners.

yes ive always bin mildly intolerant, but after a partuclarly bad stomach illness last year from India, my allergy has worsened. but its alrite, there are many stores like the one u mentioned which sell non-dairy items so its not that bad tbh.

I like white chocolate. I can't stand dark chocolate, but if that's the only one left (in a chocolate box), I'll still eat it.

"Calabaut", a Belgian milk chocolate extensively used by Josef Schmidt's Chocolatiers in San Francisco. I also like traditional Mexican chocolate from Oaxaca, or "Ibarra" brand if you can't get there.

"Picnic" the Bangladeshi chocolate, thick chocolate patty with cream and nuts (part caramel part milk taste) inside.
